How to link table to excel file on windows sharepoint website?

I am trying to create a table in access linked to an excel file stored on a
windows sharepoint website. I am able to browse to that file from 'my network
places' but after selecting the file, the wizard returns an error - ' The
wizard is unable to access information in the file "https://............
..xls". Please check that the file exists and is in the correct format.'
