I WANT MY FP2000 BACK

S

Smart-Alex

I have HAD it with FP2003 problems!! I bought 2003 about three weeks ago
and
have been trying to re-build our web site with it since I first got it....as
some
people on this forum may have noticed with my MANY requests for help!

I'm just about over the edge with this thing. FP2000, although it was a
simpler application was at least stable. With FP2003, I have had one crash
or freeze-up after
another after another after another. Several times a day, when I begin to
make change or add a
link to a page, suddenly the hourglass comes on and STAYS on. One time I
actually went for a half hour coffee break and it was STILL on when I
returned. I can't
close it without Ctrl-Alt-Del. THEN it won't reopen. ALSO, my computer won't
shut down. It gives me
the NEVER ENDING message "Saving Your Settings". I have to yank the plug
outta the wall to get it to shut down!!

I seriously don't want to fool around with this nonsense. I paid for a
product. for which I am not at all happy. I want and need some satisfaction
from Microsoft. Who do I talk to get this resolved? I am also a little tired
of being treated with a cavalier attitude as though I created the problem. I
bought it. I installed it. I expect it to work, first time and all the time.

By the way, I have done all the Detect and Repair and all the other "fix-it"
routines.

You've probably already posted this, but I don't remember. So:
Which operating system.
Which version of FP 2003, full install or upgrade??

But before you answer that try this:

Close FrontPage.

Copy and paste this into Start Run and click Ok:

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

A folder named FrontPageTempDir should open. It should be totally empty. If not, delete everything
in it. Yep everything.

Then do a search using windows search for files named *.web and delete any and all found. Yep all
of them because FrontPage will make new ones.

Then delete the temporary internet, cookie and history files.

Then reopen FrontPage and your web and see if there's any change.

Alex,

I really hate to say it, but FP03 works on most computers.
Usually if there is an problem it is related to the OS or to
conflicts with other applications. What processes do you
have running the background? What other applications are
installed on this machine? Did you upgrade from FP00 to FP03
or what?

Aside from your system hangs, the other issues you have
brought here are Hover Buttons and tables. Neither of which
is an FP issue, it is the clients machine.

Thanks to those who offered to assist. Of course I did expect at least one
"it's your fault" response.

First of all, I am very careful about what I run in he background. I'm a
tidy nut. I usually have nothing running in the BG.
The OS is Win XP-SP2. The processor is a AMD2600+ with 512 of RAM. I have
about 100G of HD space.
FP2003 is an upgrade from FP2000.

What other applications do I have. Many...but none are running in the BG.

I was not running PWS.

And I know.... yanking the plug out is no help..but I have been so
frustrated, it's surprising I didn't fling the whole CPU at the wall!

Thanks to Steve..I will try his suggestion.

I STILL didn't get an answer regarding the fact that I bought and paid for
something that doesn't work. Why do software suppliers feel that backing a
product is not a responsibility? There IS a cavalier attitude here. It's
that attitude that the technically uneducated customer is an idiot and as a
result they cause all their own problems. If this was a CAR, I'd be dead by
now!

I started to do this and realized that I did this before. Of course I did it
again.
Maybe I wasn't clear. This doesn't happen ALL the time but it does happen a
few times day. Maybe I should this procedure every morning before I start?
What do you think?

By the way, I answered your questions in separate response.

Please remember that the MVP''s and all others that post here are all volunteers and do this on our
own time.

That said, it's quite rare to have the problems that you've been experiencing.

Once you upgraded did you download and install Office 2003 Service Pack 1, which includes an upgrade
for FP 2003?

Did you install WinXP SP2 before or after you installed FP 2003?
Did you perform an upgrade to FP 2003 with FP 2002 installed, or did you do

Alex,
I was not saying it was your fault per se. I was trying to
state that some applications do not play well with one
another. I have seen where one faulty software installer was
corrupt and when you opened another completely unrelated
(usually an OEMs add-ons) program it wanted to install. I
have also seen where uninstalling one program damages
completely unrelated software.

You state you are running XP- SP2. Is it Pro or Home? Are
you logged in as an admin or as a user? Admin's have more BG
processes going on. Are you hosting this on this machine?
Have you installed Office03 Service Packs?

This forum is hosted by MS, and may be monitored by MS;
however, most people here are giving there input voluntarily
and are not compensated for it.

In a perfect world everything would work correctly the first
time. Too bad the world is not perfect

I appreciate everyone's help. I have to say that I am extremely frustrated
because these problems are putting me WAAY behind schedule.
I apologize if I'm getting very irritable. I'm losing a lot of time with
this. (time is money)

Boy...a lot of questions.

First of all, about two months ago, I basically got a new computer. I kept
the tower, one HD and Cd-Rom and when that happened I had Win XP installed
WITH SP2. (Home) FP2003 Upgrade came after. Am I logged in as Admin or
User?? Good question. I don't log in. I don't think about it. I ASSUMED it
was as Admin.

When you ask, if I am hosting..I assume you mean on our network...if so..the
answer is yes.

I had Office 97 and upgrade with Office 2000. Then a few days ago I
downloaded an Office Service Pack, (I don't know which one) thinking that
that would help...

This is a home office with two other computers linked through a Switch.

To answer someone else's question I installed the FP03 with the old FP00
installed. I didn't know that you could remove FP2000 and do a clean
install.

It may not be "your" fault, but the fact that almost nobody else has had
those kind of problems surely indicate that there is something odd about
YOUR computer.

You can if you have the FP2000 CD and it is a full install, not an upgrade.

I've seen Norton AV bring a high speed XP machine to a screeching halt that required a reboot.
Had to turn off the feature that scans every file every time you open and close it. It couldn't
handle repeatedly scanning large excel and quickbook files.

Nobody is saying it's your fault. Just that you may be unknowingly running
something that is conflicting. Going back to 2000 makes as much sense as
using DOS 1.0

When the problem occurs, open your task bar and see what processes are
running. (there WILL be stuff running) Try turning off anything suspicious
one at a time. If FP starts working, you have found the culprit. You can
then uninstall the conflicting program or uncheck it in the startup setting
in start/run/msconfig.

Wow! This has created more controversy that the hanging chads in Florida!

To answer some questions. Yes, I do have Norton AV. I don't have it set up
for auto-scan though.
Don't have Quick Books but I do have Quicken Home & Biz
Definitely have Acrobat and Acrobat Distiller and PDF Writer.
This give any clues.?

As far as getting rid of any programs in the background I do that all the
time. I also set up msconfig not to load that stuff and I often go to
Processes to see what's running.

As far as Norton is concerned...with the number o virus attacks I get a day,
I wouldn't want to turn it off for second.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

However you needed to have Norton disabled when you installed Office/FrontPage, or some files may
not be installed correctly. This could be part of your current problems, if Norton was running when
you installed FP2003.

In general any anti-virus application should be disabled when installing or upgrading applications.
