Import "just" Address Book\Contacts

Running Outlook 2007 on Desktop. Purchased a New Laptop with Outlook 2007
and just want to transfer my Address Book\Contacts from the Desktop PC to my
Laptop. I do not want to transfer any other Data...just Address
Book\Contacts.

Can this be done? Please provide step-by-step instructions as I am pretty
much a new to this; Thank You

There is no address book in Outlook. All Contact data resides in your
Contacts Folder. If you want to transfer only that folder, then you would
need to create new empty Outlook data file, copy your Contacts Folder into
that file, then copy that file and open it in the other installation. We

Thanks; when I wrote my question i used Address Book\Contacts because I was
not sure. I looked at the links, they did not address my situation clearly.
You have been very helpful in the past, and I thank you for your continued
assistance.

I see the Contact Folder in my Desktop and see all my names\addresses, etc.
I see the Contact Folder in my Laptop (where I want to transfer just my
contacts to). Could I copy and paste the Contacts from the Desktop into the
Laptop's Contact Folder....and Outlook 2007 will display those contacts?

There is no address book in Outlook. All Contact data resides in your
Contacts Folder. If you want to transfer only that folder, then you would
need to create new empty Outlook data file, copy your Contacts Folder into
that file, then copy that file and open it in the other installation. We

all referred to Outlook versions other than 2007, and all gave instructions
to Backup\Transfer the .pst file....I only want to Transfer my "Contacts". I
do not want to Transfer my Inbox....etc.

To create the data file, use File > New > Outlook Data File. Make sure you
keep track of its name and location. Then copy your Contacts Folder into

Copy this new data file and open it in the other installation (File > Open >
Outlook Data File...). Then copy the Contacts from its Contacts Folder to

I am learning.......So I create a New Data file using Outlook on my Desktop

you open the file it can become Corupted???? So I did not proceed. But

I'll then paste this Transfer.pst file.....in a folder I'll create on the
laptop and Name it TRANSFER. I'll open Outlook in my Laptop and open
Transfer.pst...Outlook is still open......I'll go to the Transfer

Contact Folder on my Laptop...and paste the Contact folder in it.

I went to the folder where the Data file I created, TRANSFER" was loacated
C:\Usrers\XXXX\AppaData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Transfer

I then copied my Contact Folder off the Desktop PC, I went to open the Data

I went to the folder where the Data file I created, TRANSFER" was loacated

You've completely mis-understood the instructions. You do all this FROM
WITHIN OUTLOOK....

As you wrote, and rightfully so, I didn't follow your instructions.....and I
have no doubt your instructions are as clear as they can be....it is me, I
just don't seem to get it. I understand how to create a new Data File. The
steps that I can't seem to understand are the copy\Paste steps after Creating
the New data File, and then Copying the Contacts file once its pasted into
the laptop. When I copy and Paste I work with Folders or Files using
Explorer and I think you are guiding me to Copy\Paste within Outlook in some
manner(or at least Gordon's brief response to this posting where he wrote,
it's all perfromed within Outlook)...and I don't know how to.

I'm reading your instructions and instead of understanding the process you
are directing me to follow, becuase of my knowledge of Copy\Paste using
Explorer, I see, although I am sure the wrong way...but none the less how I
understand Copying\Pasting that I copy the Contacts Folder from my Desktop
and PASTE it into the Contacts Folder in my Laptop and Having Outlook opened,
etc....well, best said again, I don't get it.

I think I see your problem. You cannot use Windows Explorer for copying and
pasting Outlook data that is contained within an Outlook data file. You only
use Windows Explorer to transfer the entire file from one location to
another. Once you have transferred that file, you must then open it in
Outlook and copy the data you need from it to the file that installation of
Outlook is using.
You're not alone. Microsoft made the transfer of Outlook data ridiculously
complicated and counter-intuitive.

I think I see your problem. You cannot use Windows Explorer for copying and
pasting Outlook data that is contained within an Outlook data file. You only
use Windows Explorer to transfer the entire file from one location to
another. Once you have transferred that file, you must then open it in
Outlook and copy the data you need from it to the file that installation of
Outlook is using.
You're not alone. Microsoft made the transfer of Outlook data ridiculously
complicated and counter-intuitive.

Well I already did in my instructions. Copying the data file from the
desktop to the laptop would use Windows Explorer (and whatever transfer
medium or connection you use). Copying data from one file to another is done
within Outlook after you have both files open in Outlook.

Were you needing instructions on how to Copy and Paste? It's no different in
Outlook than anywhere else. Just make sure you have both data files (e.g.,
Transfer.pst and the target installation's default.pst) open in Outlook and
both Contact Folders visible in the Navigation pane. Then:
1. Open the Contacts Folder in Transfer.pst
2. Edit > Select All > Edit > Copy
3. Open the Contacts Folder in Default.pst
4. Edit > Paste

I only know how to use Explorer to copy\paste.

I don't know\understand how to do this with Outlook open and within
Outlook.
I need to be taught....if possible.

Well I already did in my instructions. Copying the data file from the
desktop to the laptop would use Windows Explorer (and whatever transfer
medium or connection you use). Copying data from one file to another is
done
within Outlook after you have both files open in Outlook.

Now that you see....my lack of knowledge; and now that I know I can't

Explorer to perform the copy...transfer, etc, can you direct me,

short comings....the copy from from Desktop....and the copy to...in my
laptop....which doesn't include using Explorer?

I think I see your problem. You cannot use Windows Explorer for
copying
and
pasting Outlook data that is contained within an Outlook data file.
You
only
use Windows Explorer to transfer the entire file from one location to
another. Once you have transferred that file, you must then open it in
Outlook and copy the data you need from it to the file that
installation
of
Outlook is using.
You're not alone. Microsoft made the transfer of Outlook data
ridiculously
complicated and counter-intuitive.

As you wrote, and rightfully so, I didn't follow your
instructions.....and
I
have no doubt your instructions are as clear as they can be....it is
me, I
just don't seem to get it. I understand how to create a new Data
File.
The
steps that I can't seem to understand are the copy\Paste steps after
Creating
the New data File, and then Copying the Contacts file once its
pasted
into
the laptop. When I copy and Paste I work with Folders or Files
using
Explorer and I think you are guiding me to Copy\Paste within Outlook
in
some
manner(or at least Gordon's brief response to this posting where he
wrote,
it's all perfromed within Outlook)...and I don't know how to.

I'm reading your instructions and instead of understanding the

are directing me to follow, becuase of my knowledge of Copy\Paste
using
Explorer, I see, although I am sure the wrong way...but none the

I went to the folder where the Data file I created, TRANSFER"
was
loacated
C:\Usrers\XXXX\AppaData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Transfer

I then copied my Contact Folder off the Desktop PC, I went to
open
the
Data
file I created "Transfer" to paste the Contact Folder in. I
got
the
warning
message.

I am learning.......So I create a New Data file using
Outlook

alerting

you open the file it can become Corupted???? So I did not
proceed.

When I click on the Address Book Icon in Outlook, my

displayed.

Now if I simply copied the Contacts Folder from my Desktop,

pasted
it
in
my Contact Folder on my Laptop....the Transfer wouldn't
work?

If I have confused the issue\steps, or simply you feel I am
not
getting
it,
