Inserting A Contact in a Word 2004 Table Causes Spinning Beach Ball

Good idea.
It does. I confirmed it was running without my normal normal or my
global template.

I didn't bother with that 'cause I'd already done it on two machine.
The Mac Pro user was running as a non-priviliged, and the PowerBook
user had admin privs.

The exact crasher is to open a new document (default operation on start
with the PB, after dismissing the project gallery (recent) on the Pro).
Then I create a 2*2 table as the only object in the document. I then go
to view » toolbars to bring up the contacts toolbar. I click on the box
to display the drop down list of contacts, choose the only one there.
That fills in the table cell. Typing a tab crashes Word.
Heh! I have a reputation to protect!

It would be useful if more than one of us could repeat a simple crasher
recipe. Then we'd hand that over to the maintainers at MS for their
delectation.
Would they do anything with it? Naw!

Hi Elliott:

I think this is a regression of a bug we had before. It was fixed in an
update, but it sounds as though it is un-updated again...

The repro is:

A) If a Table is the first character in the document

B) If you insert "objects" (pictures, addresses, hyperlinks...) in the
first cell, then...

Weird things happen.

If the document has a populated header, or there is any text in front of the
table (a single space will do) or there ever has been text above the table
(inserted then deleted) the thing won't crash.

If that's what it is, it's one of those stupid pointer bugs that we're all
rushing to XML to rid ourselves of in the next version of Office :)

I can't make mine fail here (Word 2004 11.3, OS 10.3.9...) presumably
because of the operation of my AutoNew macro that populates the header...

Cheers

OK. I'll volunteer to escalate it. I'll write something up and drop it
on the MVP list.

This is a reply to John MGhie (post 24).

I have tried inserting text above the table, in the table, in the
document header; and all three. Word still crashes.

Your diagnosis may not, therefore, be correct. But I do have OSX
10.4.8, which may or may not be a factor.

Is there something else that is different here, between what you are
doing and what I am doing ?

My good wishes.

Hi John -

Hi Elliott:

I think this is a regression of a bug we had before. It was fixed in an
update, but it sounds as though it is un-updated again...
I vaguely recall this although I didn't experience it at the time.
The repro is:

A) If a Table is the first character in the document

However, in the testing I reported in this thread I had several paras
preceding the table & still experienced the crash. I just re-confirmed it on
the second page of a 3 page doc - no change in behavior,,, crash on
insertion of contact in any cell if Formatting Toolbar is displayed.
B) If you insert "objects" (pictures, addresses, hyperlinks...) in the
first cell, then...

Weird things happen.

In this test I also noticed that even with the Formatting Toolbar OFF,
inserting the Contact didn't cause a crash, but the insertion point went to
the END of the doc on each contact insertion. I believe this is part of the
behavior described by others as well. Hadn't noticed it previously because
the table was at the end of the doc in other testing.
If the document has a populated header, or there is any text in front of the
table (a single space will do) or there ever has been text above the table
(inserted then deleted) the thing won't crash.

If that's what it is, it's one of those stupid pointer bugs that we're all

I can't make mine fail here (Word 2004 11.3, OS 10.3.9...) presumably
because of the operation of my AutoNew macro that populates the header...

As above, the amount of content (here) makes no difference whatsoever. The
crash behavior somehow seems tied directly to the Formatting Toolbar,
although the Contact insertion still isn't 'right' when the crash doesn't
occur.

Keep 'em coming guys. I plan to write it all up for the MVP list today.
(I'm mostly offline after that for a couple of weeks, unless the remote

Hi Simon:

No.

If putting text above the table doesn't fix it, it's a different bug :)

Cheers

Beth,

This issue did get escalated and I have reported it. Unfortunately, at this
time I do not have any new information to pass on other than I have
reproduced the issue and we are currently looking at it.
