Installation ended prematurely

B

Brett Dean

Hi There,

I am trying to install office 2k on Windows ME and it
begins
install but almost immediately comes up with an error.

"Installation ended prematurely because of an error"

There is no more detail as far as error number just have
to hit OK.

I have searched the knowledge base for this and found a
couple of references but they were based at OS Win2k or NT.

I had a look at misxxx.txt which one suggested and there
is a fatalerror line in this txt doc. but dont no what to
change to make the install continue..

If anyone can help with this it would be appreciated.

Thanks

"Installation Ended Prematurely Because of an Error" When You Run Office
Setup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;230895

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do either of the following:
Method 1: Run Setup from a Network Server
If you are in a networked environment and you have access to an
administrative installation of Office 2000, run Setup from this location
instead of your CD-ROM drive. The security settings mentioned in the
"Cause" section of this article do not affect running Setup from a network
server.
Method 2: Turn Off the "Restrict CD-ROM Access to Locally Logged on User
Only" Security Option
If you turn off the Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged on user only
security option, you can run Setup from your CD-ROM drive. Please see the
documentation on the Microsoft Security Configuration Manager for more
information about modifying this setting.

NOTE: You may have to restart after you turn off the Restrict CD-ROM access
to locally logged on user only security option before you can run Setup
from your CD-ROM drive.

Thanks for the response. However, there is no restrictive policy for this
system. I have tried to install from a CD, as well as a flat file (cd
contents copied to the servers local drive) and yet none of these
installations work.

Is there any reason I should not be able to install office 2000 onto a
windows 2000 domain controller?

Hi Brett,

I am not sure of the reason why you are not able to install Office 2000 in
WIndows 2000 domain controller. There could be many simple reasons why y
are still getting this error.

CAUSE
You may receive the error message if the IE5 folder has been renamed or
deleted.

NOTE: The IE5 folder typically resides at the root of an Office
administrative installation.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, rename the IE5 folder back to IE5. If you deleted
the IE5 folder, follow these steps:
Create a new administrative installation of Office in a folder that is
different from your original administrative installation.
Copy the IE5 folder from this new administrative installation into your
original administrative installation.
Delete the folder that contains the new administrative installation.
On a network client, re-run Setup from the administrative installation.

Yeah, unfortunately that is not the case either. I can use the exact same
installation point, which is just a copy of the cd onto the server, to
install office on all clients running windows 2000. But when I attempt to
install it on the dc, I get this error.

I do appreciate the suggestions and your responses Raghu, but they are the
same articles I have found during my own searches. Is it possible that there
is an entry in the registry that is causing this issue?

Side note: I have tried running office xp installation but I get the same
error.
