jpgs on site showing up on mozilla but not IE7

P

help! The jpgs on my site are showing up well on mozilla, but not on IE7.
The html is correct, there are no spaces in the code and I don't know what to
do next.
I have checked the 'show pictures' box/internet options/advanced
I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE.
I have deleted the jpgs in publisher and re-inserted them and uploaded the
website again.
I have even changed the images to .gif to see if that made a difference and
it doesn't.
This seems to be a problem that has occurred only over the last week or so,
as I'm pretty sure the .jpgs showed up when the site was first uploaded.

My hosting company is proving next to useless.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks very much.

you'll never convert a Publisher created website if that's what you're
trying to do...give up and start over in FP or EW. Publisher webs or any web
that uses VML (vector markup language) will only work reliably in IE (I
think 5+)...and if you do use FP do not use anything from the Draw
toolbar...textboxes, lines, autoshapes.

don't use spaces, illegal characters, or capitalization in your folder or
file names
Frankland%20Associates_Rewards.htm - should be something like;
frankland_associates_rewards.htm same thing for images.

Confused, Are you saying that a Publisher created site WILL only work
reliably in IE.....
as its only working reliably in Mozilla at the moment, not in IE.

I will also try and figure out how to rename the folder and file names.

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

Yep that's what I'm saying...and it's not working correctly on my IE7 either
soooo...dint even look with other browsers once I saw that.

Not sure how you'd change file names in Publisher webs...I think you'd have
to go back and rename all your files then resave as website then
republish...but I've only done a few experimental webs with Publisher - so
wait till one of the others weighs in on this.

hopefully someone else can join in as I am totally confused as to why the
site works fine on mozilla but not IE7.

I'm also really confused as to why the site worked fine on IE up to last week.

Weird.

Interesting;

IE7 is blocking or can't find the image.

Firefox it's ok.
Mozilla is ok too.

You are apparently not using the subfolder option, which is fine, but
somewhere along the line, when you Publish to the Web you apparently are
saving the default file name as " frankland_associates.htm". This then name
your images in a wierd way that is probably throwing off IE.

On your home page the picture of three people answering phone calls in the
upper left, is being written as: "frankland_associates_image789.jpg". If you
were to use the default name of "index.htm", the image would be
"index_image789.jpg".

I would suggest that you log on to your website and delete all the old
Publisher HTML files, including the image files, and upload fresh files. But
this time when you Publish to the Web, choose "index.htm" as your default
file name, and see if that makes any difference.

By the way, Rob is correct that in many cases Publisher websites lack cross
browser support, but in your case your site is loading just fine in
FF....with one exception. For some reason the bottom navbar never works in
FF when it is generated automatically by Publisher. It is converted to an
image, and the links are killed. Mouseover your links on the bottom and you
will see they aren't live.

Once you get the bigger problem fixed of naming your site files correctly
and thus get the images to load correctly, post back and I will give you
instructions on a couple workarounds for that bottom navbar.

Rob,

Do the FP & EW webs have/use VML?

Am I understanding correctly? Is the primary problem with VML a lack of
cross browser support? Are there other problems associated with VML?

I have observed, more than understood, issues with Publisher pages that
seemed to be linked to or caused by VML.

Educate me ;-)

FP can create and use VML but thankfully it can be turned off in Authoring.
EW it's not available at all, though it seems you can move the objects
around

Verbose yet interesting: http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-VML.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_Markup_Language

About a year ago there was a poster here that was having problems with her
Publisher web, when I looked at her code for one page it was 30,000 (yes 4
zeroes) lines long...hmmmm. Layers upon layers and all sorts of gobbledy
gook. Publisher (probably VML) makes it too easy to create a mess like that.

Rob, thanks for the links and the info...

The code bloat can be reduced depending on the version of Publisher and how
the code is produced. Filtered code is far better than the unfiltered, as an
example. In fact if memory serves, the page that you are talking about was
an unfiltered page...and was produced with Pub 2002??

Some steps were taken to reduce the problem of code bloat and file size in
Pub 2007....but your point is valid. Publisher web pages are bloated
compared to others...especially 2002. And FWIW Pub 2000 doesn't use VML, and
produces code and web files that are a fraction of the size.

I'm stuck also!
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index_image789.jpg on this server.

But http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg views fine in
Mozilla. Well, yes and no. I can right click/view image and it displays.
However, forcing a reload of the page brings up the Forbidden message.

Doesn't Pub usually put all the images in an /index_files/ folder?

Mike

I am running up against the same issue as Mike. When I right click the image
on your home page, and want to view image (in FF), I get the following:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index_image789.jpg on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at franklandassociates.com Port 80

You should be able to view that image at:
http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg
in FF and IE but it doesn't work.

Let's back up a few steps.
1. Which version of Publisher are you using?
2. Are you using Master pages?
3. Under Tools > Options > Web tab, do you have "Rely on VML for faster
graphics..." checked or unchecked? What about "Allow PNG..."? And what
Encoding are you using?
4.Is there any particular reason why you are not using subfolders? Have you
tried using subfolders?
5. When you produce your web page files, do you "Publish to the Web"?
6. Is there anything special about how you are directing your domain or how
it is hosted? Who hosts your website?

You are experiencing something I haven't seen before, but if you can answer
the above questions, perhaps we can offer some more solutions.

He isn't using the subfolder option, and that is why there is no index_files
folder.

I can't get the image to load whether I right click/view or paste the URL in
the address, in either FF or IE.

publishersite

1. Which version of Publisher are you using? - 2003
2. Are you using Master pages? - No
3. Under Tools > Options > Web tab, do you have "Rely on VML for faster
graphics..." checked or unchecked? What about "Allow PNG..."? And what
Encoding are you using? - i've got neither checked, encoding is Western European (Windows)
4.Is there any particular reason why you are not using subfolders? Have you
tried using subfolders? - no particular reason, although I did try using subfolders today and it didn't seem to make a difference
5. When you produce your web page files, do you "Publish to the Web"? - Yes.
6. Is there anything special about how you are directing your domain or how
it is hosted? Who hosts your website? - I use Hosteroute.

Not sure if this makes a difference but.....see
www.efranklandconsulting.com. The jpgs work on this site and its hosted by
Nameroute. I recently upgraded the franklandassociates.com site to
Hosteroute, and this is when the problems started. When I upload
associates.com onto the Nameroute site the images view fine.

Hostroute have told me the following:

Hostroute: After reviewing how you have deployed your site, my only advice
would be to streamline the code of your site. It seems you have incorrectly
implemented an old and widely unsupported technology that isn't even
supported by the w3c. SVG which was accepted by the w3c is the more
conventional way. You currently have a very inefficient code base in that
your homepage includes 1400 lines of code, when you are trying to display
less than 400 words. This makes debugging very difficult. The fact that the
pictures display correctly in several browsers (that you mentioned) showes
that this in another case of Microsoft no longer supporting their own old
technologies in their new products. We do not offer application support, and
thus we can help you no further in this case.

Me: I am still concerned though as to why this has suddenly started
happening - the site displayed fine up until last week and I've changed
nothing on it.

franklandassociates displayed fine on the Nameroute 10MB basic package that
I've had since January.
(see also www.efranklandconsulting.com) - that's a publisher website and
displays fine on IE. It's only since I've upgraded to the hosteroute 20MB
package that the problems have occurred. When I load franklandassociates
onto the efranklandconsulting domain the site displays fine in IE.
Any other thoughts as to why the site displays on nameroute but not hostroute?

Hostroute:As stated by my colleague the problem lookslike you are using an
old codebase that IE does not support any more. I have tested this in firefox
and safari and they work. you will need to recode the site to use a current
standard.

......All of which is very confusing to me as I can't understand why the
exact same website with the same coding (as publisher automatically creates
the coding) works on one host but not the other.

Rather long post but hope you have all the detail you need.
Cheers for your interest.

Mike Koewler

I suggest cutting and pasting this into a letter to Tech Support.
Start text:

Thanks for your feedback. I have had a couple of other people trying to
help me solve this problem and this is what they report:

"While the images do display in the pages in Mozilla and and Opera, but
not IE or AOL, they get a "Forbidden - You don't have permission to
access /index_image789.jpg on this server." when trying to access just
the image in Mozilla. This message does not appear in Opera, the page
http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg displays fine.

This would suggest a server or browser error and how it responds to
requests.

-----------
End text.

One other thought - some servers dislike certain characters in a file
name. Can you try to rename the jpgs to avoid the underscore and see if
that helps? Maybe Opera has a way of requesting the info in a different way?

I admit - I'm grasping at straws.

D

DavidF

I would tend to agree with Mike...the problem appears to be with their
server, but I would describe the problem a bit different.

The pages load with images with FF, but not IE 6 or 7. And when you try to
view just the image as per
http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg then neither FF or IE
will view the image. And then I would include the full error:

"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index_image789.jpg on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at franklandassociates.com Port 80"

I would also include the other testing done on other servers as you
described, as obviously the code works just fine except for this server. The
fact that the code is "old technology" and bloated is beside the point, as
it works on other servers, and that should not make any difference on
viewing http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg

One other thing you MIGHT try is changing the encoding to Unicode (UTF-8).
