jpgs on site showing up on mozilla but not IE7

He can't get rid of the underscore...that is just the way Publisher names
the image files.

David,
The pages load with images with FF, but not IE 6 or 7. And when you try to
view just the image as per
http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg then neither FF or IE
will view the image.

I think the fact the above page views in Opera has to have some key to it.

Something else - I tried to download the site into WebPlus. Usually, it
does a great job but it did not import a single image. Neither did it
from his other site on the different server. But I have a couple of
sites done in Pub bookmarked, and it imported images from them.

Perhaps he should upload the Pub file to his site where people can
download and check it.

usually underscore is only a problem if it's the first char. in the file
name.

|I suggest cutting and pasting this into a letter to Tech Support.
| Start text:
|
| Thanks for your feedback. I have had a couple of other people trying to
| help me solve this problem and this is what they report:
|
| "While the images do display in the pages in Mozilla and and Opera, but
| not IE or AOL, they get a "Forbidden - You don't have permission to
| access /index_image789.jpg on this server." when trying to access just
| the image in Mozilla. This message does not appear in Opera, the page
| http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg displays fine.
|
| This would suggest a server or browser error and how it responds to
| requests.

| End text.
|
| One other thought - some servers dislike certain characters in a file
| name. Can you try to rename the jpgs to avoid the underscore and see if
| that helps? Maybe Opera has a way of requesting the info in a different
way?
|
| I admit - I'm grasping at straws.

I just imported the entire web; there are NO image files contained within it
only index_xxx.htm files - don't through IE which is not displaying images.
The curious part of this is that FF IS displaying images and paths to
images. Seems like there is two webs here one with images (where??? dunno)
and one without.

I think it's a server permissions issue.

I'm guessing, from info herein, that Publisher creates several versions of
the website...right?

Seems that http://www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg image is
visible with Firefox, but not with IE or other mozilla browsers - these
produce a 404 file not found permissions error. So the file exists for FF
but not for IE? Weird eh? Some weird interaction between a Pub web and linux
permissions??

I'd talk to the host.

Rob, David - check it out, fixed it myself.

I was fiddling around in the control panel and discovered:

The hoster has an option under the control panel called "hotlink protection"
which I've just disabled. The images now view on all browsers.

I've mailed the host to suggest they include this question in their
diagnostics - so much for the code being the issue!

Cheers for all your help; your posts have really educated me about publisher
and websites in general.
Thanks so much.

Rob,

The OP has found the solution, "hotlinks protection", whatever that is. I
think you were correct, it is/was a permissions issue.

Anyway, yes, Publisher produces two sets of code...on for IE and "dumber
code" for other browsers. It even produces different images of varying
formats and resolution for different browsers, with the goal of providing
the best image depending on what browser was used. In my experience this
actually seems to produce slower loading and lesser quality images, and
apparently in this case, no images at all. This is also one of the reasons
for the code bloat. FWIW my experience and observation is that many of the
problems associated with Publisher web pages, and particularly cross browser
issues are because of the coding engine and the VML. The OP's host suggests
it is outdated and unsupported, and which is consistent with MS moving away
from it with Web Expression. Hopefully MS will also continue to move
Publisher away from VML too. They did remove the "Rely on VML for faster
graphics downloading" as an option in Pub 2007, but the coding engine still
uses some VML and I am not sure how it changed the HTML output.

Congrats, and thanks for posting back. This is a new one. Was there any
documentation or a description about what "hotlink protection" meant on the
host? If so, could you post that? Thanks.

DavidF

Here you go:

HotLink protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files
(as specified below) on your website. Other sites will still be able to link
to any file type that you don't specify below (ie. html files). An example of
hotlinking would be using a <img> tag to display an image from your site from
somewhere else on the net. The end result is that the other site is stealing
your bandwidth. You should ensure that all sites that you wish to allow
direct links from are in the list below. This system attempts add all sites
it knows you own to the list, however you may need to add others.

Enable Hotlink Protection:
Urls to Allow Access:
http://franklandassociates.com http://www.franklandassociates.com

Extensions to allow (separate by commas):jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp
Url to Redirect to:

......as you can see the host automatically adds your own site to the list -
however as i've found out, to enable this function means that images do not
show in IE.

David,

There has to be more to this. Hot link protection, at least as far as I
have experienced and used it, only stops other urls from linking to an
image or page or whatever. But the OP's site's code didn't show that the
images were on a different site, they were in his root directory:
www.franklandassociates.com/index_image789.jpg

Of course, MS doesn't always follow the masses so maybe that is why IE
doesn't work.

As an aside, it's interesting to see that from the stats of a new site I
did, only 56% of the viewers use IE. Yeah, it's still the majority, but
given that a year ago, the figure was at 95+ percent, MS needs to be
aware of how many web surfers have switched browsers.

Thanks for the follow up and your own detective work. As I said, this is a
new one around here, and the solution may help someone else in the future.

Hi Mike,

I think it has to do with the VML coding that Publisher uses for IE. Yes,
the images were on the server, but remember that until the OP disabled the
hot link protection, we couldn't get just the image to load in either IE or
FF....or at least I couldn't the last time I tried. The images would load
within the page in FF, but not individually.

Heck one of the main reasons I use Publisher is that I don't want to have to
understand coding, so I am not going to spend a lot of time trying to figure
it out. I suppose the fact that the OP has IE7 installed might even have
something to do with how the output changed. I did compare the code with
another Pub 2003 site and there was extra code in the OP's head
code...<shrug>. Anyway, I don't pretend to understand it...just glad the OP
was able to get it working.

Its funny how Ohio has evolved away from IE. If you lived in California or
Washington, perhaps, but in the middle of the corn fields? ;-) I noticed
that my site is down to 75% IE...down from around 85% on average. I think
that MS is getting it, as Rob said, Web Expression is designed for better
cross browser support than FrontPage was. Hopefully someday, the poor
neglected Publisher html coding engine will be updated.

Mike Koewler

David,

I'm glad the OP sorted it out also, but the image file would load in
Opera - no Forbidden message using it.

Probably one of those things relating to too many process to ever figure
out!

best thing to do would be delete all the files from the server, then
re-open them in pub, save the page as index into a new folder, then put
the whole thing back online, which should have renamed your files for
the page, which i think is where the problem arose from, when you
renamed the files and now the publisher built site doesn't know where
the original file names are, it really only takes a small typo when you
rename your image folder for your html to lose the way to them, should
only take about 20 mins really, and thats taking your time
curious.....do the other pages at the site do the same thing or are they OK?

good stuff
Rob, David - check it out, fixed it myself.

I was fiddling around in the control panel and discovered:

The hoster has an option under the control panel called "hotlink protection"
which I've just disabled. The images now view on all browsers.

I've mailed the host to suggest they include this question in their
diagnostics - so much for the code being the issue!

Cheers for all your help; your posts have really educated me about publisher
and websites in general.
Thanks so much.
