Key words and description meta tags

S

SueF

Using FP2000, I used the component to add key words and descriptions. Looks
like it worked. However, I tried one of the freebie web page analyzers and it
said I didn't have any of either. Did I run into a "come on"? Since I'm not
comfortable with code, yet I have to trust FP, but this threw me a curve.

I've heard that most search engines don't pay attention to meta tags but
some do so I think I need them. The site is hellscanyonchamber.com

Also, I'm thinking that creating a "search" function on my site will help
with search engine recognition. Am I reading right?

Advice?

You are using the wrong format for meta tags. You are using <meta
http-equiv when it should be <meta name

Visit www.searchenginewatch.com for information on meta tags.

Have a search feature on your site will not have a bearing on search engine
rankings.

I've heard that most search engines don't pay attention to meta tags but
some do so I think I need them.

The important ones do not use them for anything other than a description of
the link after a hit has been found.

Thanks, Tom. I think I can handle adding one word to the meta tag FP created.
I wonder why the program didn't do it right. Something I did/didn't do?

Thanks George. I used the register feature of my server earlier and want to
get things in better shape before the search sites begin to pay attention.

And it's getting even more so that the description is text right out of the page.

Hi Sue

Tom's answered your question on why they were not coming up, but I notice
you don't have any menu text links, the se's can't follow your graphic menu
links to spider your site though you do have a site map which will help.
Having a search function will help your users find information on your site
but it won't have an affect on search engines. To learn more about SEO
(search engine optimisation) I suggest you join this free SEO class.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SEO_Techniques/ be sure to read the
guidelines.

Let me know if this helps.

What? SE's can't follow graphic links? I don't think so....

But where did you find a link to her page?

S

SueF

Murray, Now I'm really confused. I was assuming Tina opened up my site like
the rest of you guys do.

Thanks - there would be no problem with those links. Here's how a search
engine would see that page -

http://tinyurl.com/4qaqo

It's not graphical links that are the problem, it's links embedded in
javascript like you get with nearly any all-javascript menu system,
including HierMenus, Milonic, OpenCube, Xara, Macromedia's pop-ups, and
about a gazillion others.

OK, I used the tinyurl link for my website. It said - Warning: No h1,
h2, or h3 headings were found. What does that mean?

One of the ways that SE's evaluate how meaningful the content on your page
is, is to look for how meaningful *YOU* think it is.

If you have important information there, then you should use the proper
semantic markup to make it important. This means that instead of this -

<font face="whatever" size="5"><b>THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT</b></font>

you should have <h1>THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT</h1>

Next to the title on your page, semantic markup is the most important thing
in determining page ranking, I think.

Amendment .... sorry I was not clear what I meant.

Search engine spiders WILL follow image links, so getting the pages indexed
is not an issue. HOWEVER, image links lose all the benefits provided by
anchor text links. (Which is simply good old fashioned text links that use
your key phrase as the text for the link) Anchor text links are vital for
your position in the search engine results.

Sorry for the confusion.

Certainly - but you can ameliorate that downside by using the alt and the
title attribute - they are great places to stuff SE candy....

Murray,

Search engine rarely use the content of the Alt or Title or meta tag for indexing a page, they
however do use them to compare the actual view page content and you can rank lower if they don't
match.

This is certainly news to me. Are you sure about that? Last time I went
through the 'rules' they used everything on the page.
