Key words and description meta tags

From personal experience I have a client's site with Alt text, where the Alt text has never been
indexed in 5 years by any of the major search engines. The meta tags are used to a degree. I don't
use the Title tag, so maybe they are actually indexing those.

Next question. Jim Buyens' book talks about page titles being important. I
thought the titles were what are in my banner & links (i.e., the names of the
businesses, attractions, etc.) Don't the SEs see those? Am I supposed to add
something else?

Trying to get the "title tags" I went into page properties and changed the
title from "Home" to "Hells Canyon Chamber of Commerce" -- is that what
you're talking about?

If the text is in an image, then the SE can not read it.

Yes... that's it. Now to help your search engine ranking, you might add
some appropriate keywords after what you've already entered. Do this for
EVERY page on the website, with keywords matching the content of that
specific page. Then make sure those keywords are repeated as text
somewhere on the page (e.g., a heading using <H1> would be ideal).

This is one of the meta tags that search engines do still use, including
Google, so it's an important one (a) not to leave out and (b) to reserve
for the most important search terms for that page.

Thomas, just to clarify. You're saying that the engines can't read the text
in the image at the top of http://hellscanyonchamber.com right? But running
Murray's http://tinyurl.com/4qaqo it picked up all the text in my navigation
bars, even non helpful ones. I thought the theme's nav bars were images too.
Is there some html I can associate with the top logo image so that the text
will get picked up?

Thanks for helping, I'm trying to learn fast as I can.

Sue,

You would have to add Alt text or Title text to your top banner. The navigation text was picked up
because it had Alt text associated with each link.

Add text that describes a graphic

In 'Page view', right-click the graphic, choose 'Picture Properties' on the
popup menu, and then click the General tab.
In the Text box, under 'Alternative representations', type the alternative
text (alternative text: Used by Web browsers to display text during image
downloads for users who have graphics turned off, and for users who rely on
screen-reading software to convert graphics on the screen to spoken words. )
for the graphic.

Note Some Web browsers also display alternative text while the graphic is
downloading, or when a site visitor moves the mouse pointer over the
graphic.

Tip

Alternative text should be just long enough to convey the meaning of the
image but by using keywords about the image that appear on the page you can
increase your search engine optimisation of the page.

Yes Tina, your explanation helped a lot. I was guessing that's what I needed
to do in picture properties, but when I did it, nothing shows up in the html
view. Selecting the logo graphic shows only <body >
<p align="center"> </p> in my html view. One reason for confusion on my part.

This is a downside (or a feature, depending on your point of view) of using
shared borders. FrontPage will display the shared border in Normal or
Design view, and allow it to be edited, but will not display the HTML code
for the border in HTML or Code view.

To see the HTML in a border, Tools->Web Settings or Site Settings
On the Advanced tab, tick the box "Show hidden files and folders"
Click OK and allow the web to be refreshed.

The border files are in the normally hidden _borders folder.

Hi Everyone, just following along. If I understand you correctly with
rankings and search engine procedures: I changed the title in my IE bar from
"tech ideas" to "dvd burning, treo 650 tips and Fantasy Authors". Do I
understand correectly that this will have relate my site to the ideas in text
in the title bar?

I wouldn't say that they make the site more visible to search engines. But
search engines do give consideration to the words in the <title> tag when
they determine what kind of relevant content is on your site.

So, if you have the words "barbecue sauce" in the <title> tag, search
engines will be more likely to rank the page well in searches for "barbecue
sauce". It's a good tactic to use, as long as the words in the title bar do
accurately reflect the page content.
