Laptop Crashes When Using Word 2003

I have a very unusual problem in that my Microsoft Word 2003 installation has
become corrupt and I have tried everything apart from blowing it away and
starting from scratch.

When I use word, it is fine. As soon as I attempt to access the extended
menus via the chevrons word crashes my entire laptop. I cant even access the
'about' menu item to get my PID to report the problem to Microsoft.

The interesting thing, is that when I start windows XP in safe mode, I have
no problems. As soon as I load everything up as normal I get the crash. The
last straw came at the weekend when it corrupted my Windows XP installation
and I had to reinstall everything.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? It is really miffing me off.

Event viewer shows anything?
If its OK in safe mode I would suspect a driver problem, possibly video
driver.
Have you updated any drivers?
Has it allways been this way?
Are you able to run detect repair from the cd?

Hi there, Thanks for your response.

I have run chk disk, scan disk, event view, no error showed

reinstalled all drivers, including print and video, still didnt seem to work

did repair, did reinstall, did update, etc

deleted registry key entries

ran all error checks as per previous posts for other people

still no joy

This is a new laptop, and a new installation of office 2003, only recently
started to use office. I am going to try completely removing office 2003 and
reinstalling from scratch to see if that works.

I still would still suspect a driver problem/ possible conflict the startup
app, particularly as its ok in safe mode.
Try Msconfig.exe, disable all non MS startups, then test word again.
If the problem has gone away, then selectively enable startups a batch at a
time and test again.
If problem is not cured by disabling startup apps then try
http://www.dependencywalker.com/
You have to run word through the Depends interface, see if it enables you to
detect the problem module.
Using this has, in the past been reccommended to me, by MS tech.

PS If its a laptop you 'did' install drivers from Laptop manu site / cd and
not from elsewhere?
