One other thing. I just tried it in TextEdit, it worked fine. Then I saved that as a Word document and opened it in Word 2008 and it worked fine there too.

What about in:

Applications/MS Office 2008/Office/Startup/Word

Something may have gotten slipped in there, although I'm just grasping at
the proverbial straw.

Did you remove the Word 2008 Normal template - I know you mentioned doing
the 2004 and that it resolved the issue in that version, but I didn't see
any mention of anything other than Prefs for 2008. Even if you did it may be
time to try it again. Make sure Word isn't running - that's very important.
Then go to User/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates,
remove/rename Normal.dotm, then launch Word 2008 & see what happens in a new
document - old documents may still exhibit the problem even if the new ones
are OK. You might also do a Spotlight search for: Normal, just to make sure
there are no other Normal templates elsewhere.

Although I had over 3000 documents with the word Normal in them, I only had one Normal template for Word 2008 and one for Word 2004. I had renamed the Word 2008 one yesterday and it didn't work, but as you suggested, I did that again today and it worked!!! My previous document that wasn't working still doesn't, but I opened other old ones, changed the fonts to the problem ones and sizes, and it still worked!!!

Then I began wondering about the fact that I usually am in compatibility mode, since I'm usually needing documents that are .doc, and found that if I opened one, they were fine. If I created a new one, that was fine. But if I went to preferences and clicked on the compatibility one that shows options for 2004, compatibility checker flags that I've got my preferences set for Word 6/Word 95 in any document, even if I save it as Word 2004. I tried that several times and it keeps doing that. When I went back to showing the options under Word 2008, compatibility checker was happy with all documents. I wonder if that has anything to do with my previous problem?

BUT the good news is at least at the moment I think everything may be OK!!!

Thanks to both of you, Bob and Daiya, for your unbelievable level of help with this!!!!! You are both quite terrific!!! I'll let you know if I'm wrong and this wasn't fixed after all, but it looks as if it's all set.

Bob - Thanks for the link to the document about fixing document corruption. I printed out the old one and typed it in again as a new one so I don't need that. However, you might find it interesting that I tried copying and pasting a heading that was on the old page into the new one, just a few words. After that, the font problem was back in that entire new document, so I had to create yet another new document. So there's something about copying anything into a document that can corrupt that one document, even just a couple of words.

Sure there is - the paragraphs (¶) which carry the formatting also carry the
corruption & every time you press return the new paragraph continues the
trend. Try going back to that doc & just copying the *text* without catching
the ¶ that follows it... When you paste into another doc I'll bet the
problem isn't there:)
