Hey Lessig,

There is a rather large probability that you and others are encountering the
same issue that was posted on the thread titled "Re: Word 2004 + Macintel +
Some Adobe OpenType Fonts = Crash on save" Google groups link here:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...185bbc04cf1/891a702389b37828#891a702389b37828

Microsoft and Apple are working together to resolve this issue.

In the meantime, you may want to try removing any OpenType fonts in your
Fonts folders (UserFolder: Library: Fonts or Hard Disk: Library: Fonts) so
Word does not use them and see if that alleviates the problem. From what I
understand by reading the various threads, not every OpenType font causes
this issue, so you may want to try adding these fonts back one by one to see
which ones are causing the problem.

For when you need to use these OpenType fonts, you can make use of Word's
Font Substitution ability. If a font is not installed on the machine, Word
will retain the formatting of the text in an unavailable font but display
the characters in a font that is available. (For Example: Word will
*display* Adobe's Carlson Font as Times New Roman, but when you place the IP
on the formated character the Formatting Palette will still say it's the
Carlson Font.)

If you need to type in one of these OpenType fonts, you could use the Format
Painter tool to copy the formatting from an existing document or create a
new style that uses this unavailable font. Word's Font Substitution will
ensure the text is formatted correctly (for when you pass that document onto
another machine that has the font).

Hope this helps,
