FontBook is fine. If you are running anything else, tell it not to load
while you do some testing.
With FontBook, ensure that all your fonts are selected as "Enabled" for all
applications.
We still do not know for sure what is causing your problem. This is just
another diagnostic test.
A computer is slow for one or more of three reasons: CPU, Disk, or Memory.
I think in your case the machine is disk-bound, but we need to confirm that.
Then we need to find out what is causing excessive disk activity when Word
loads. My current guess is that it's the Font Cache is out of date and
being rebuilt.
