Sue Donum said:I've been using this iMac since I got it in May, which was when I installed
Entourage and imported all of my email from Outlook Express. So, any
"initial" Spotlight indexing took place way back then. I didn't begin to
experience the Spinning Beachball until very recently. (The only thing that
I can imagine might somehow -- based on your description -- cause additional
"heavy" indexing would be if somehow rebuilding the database (which I find
myself having to do routinely) would cause Spotlight to have to "start all
over again" in order to "update" its index.)
A database is seen as one item. If you rebuild, Spotlight in System
Preferences is going to try and index the database. This will cause
slowdowns.
Entourage actually creates cache files for each individual message. This
does not create slowdowns.
SyncServices? I haven't a clue about SyncServices.

If you have Sync Services turned on in Entourage 2008, the top right search
box uses Sync Services. It's blazing fast.
(FWIW: I'v already changed both Spotlight's and Entourage's prefs, and the
Spinning Beachball still is causing my Mac to crawl...and now it looks like
it's not only Entourage, but also Finder that's eating CPU cycles.)
This is beyond the scope of this newsgroup. I really suggest you join one of
the general Mac mailing lists. The Mac-L list supports both Classic and OSX.
You should find other users there that can offer their advice.
Everything you say indicates your computer might be running OSX, but at
heart, you are a Classic user trying to make it Classic.
One option is to create a new User in System Preferences. You'll need to
move over your Microsoft User Data folder, but you will be starting with all
new preferences. In fact, you might want to start with a new Identity. I
would be very careful in adding third party applications. This could be
where your problems lie.
If you would like to talk to someone, I'll be happy to set up a phone
conference with you to give you some general advice. Send me an email off
list to set up a time.
