I have the same issue, and do not have an "open with" option when I right click on the document so that won't work for me. I see advice on another site that I delete the following registry subkey: KHEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SaredTool\TextConverters\Import\MSWord6.wpc. The site claims this will unregister the converter and that Microsoft Office will then use it's own converter to open the document.

IS THIS REALLY OK TO DO???

Yes, it's OK to do. I just tried this method too, but it didn't seem to
solve my problem. Guess I'll keep on searching..

To unregister the mswrd632 converter yourself, edit the registry as follows:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
For 32-bit versions of Windows
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wp
For 64-bit versions of Windows
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wp
On the Edit menu, click Delete
Click Yes
Exit Registry Editor.
This change will effectively unregister the converter and disable it for third-party applications and for Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will use its own text converters to open these kinds of files.

Maybe part of my problem is that I don't have MS Office - I have Word 2002 as part of MS Works. What can I do in this case?

I just tried the suggestion from Keyvan above ("Just save the file with extension DOCX and than open it with MS Word (Word wil convert and open it fine)."

It worked!!! Thanks, Keyvan.

1. My software is totally up to date, using Office 2003, getting this error.
2. I don't do registry edits and should not have to do so to fix something
that y'all messed up.

It is truly evil that MS has broken Office with this Security Fix, thereby trying to force users to upgrade to a newer version of Office. Neither of the registry fixes worked for me, but I'll now try the other two methods mentioned here. I've always used MS Office, but I guarantee you that I will be switching to something else when I get the chance

What a complete lack of integrity.

So if MS had left the converter open to attack so that your PC became
infected you would have been happy?

No Terry, they could have just fixed it so that it still worked and it wasn't open to attack, but I get the feeling that wasn't the reason. My guess is that third-parties were using the converter to get around Word and MS didn't like that. Either way, I'm hosed. I tried both of the other methods and they didn't help. I went to open it on a completely different computer that I don't think has the updates, and it not only wouldn't work there, but then Word wanted to modify my normal template on that computer. So now having a deadline, I have to completely rewrite this critical file from scratch. I've also tried it on a few other files and it's non-deterministic which ones will open and which won't, so now my huge library of docs just hit a new level of obsoleteness.
