Office 2003 went into a very limited function Mode

R

Ron

Have new machine not even a month old. 2.8GHz, 512M, 80G Hard drive, It has Microsoft Windows XP PRO and Windows 2003 Small Business Edition all OEM software
The system was just fine for about 3 weeks then Outlook stopped working and MS Word went into a very limited mode. Unable to do anything only bring up and existing file and print. Cannont even start typing a new letter. All I get is a message at the bottom of the screen saying " This modification is not allowed because the document is locked". Called the company's customer support. We went through proceedures to see if the files were locked in some way. Also check the lincense. Now customer service is at a loss telling me this is a new one to them I can use Wordpad with the files without a problem. Did try uninstalling and reinstalling but the same problem now stays know matter what.
Have not been able to find much that sounds like this problems on the forums. Would someone have some ideas what it might be

Yes, I tried to activate office but know acitvation wizard would come up. When I talked this over with ZT Group technical support in NJ they did not seem to worry them. They lead me to believe that as long as XP was OK that Office 2003 SBE was ok also.

I forgot to tell you I tried to activate it again through help after I had removed and reloaded. The wizard did not come up that time either. Did not even see anything flash by like it was trying.

Thank you for the information. I wanted to tell you that I have three machines all doing the same thing. When I first got the machines no registration for Windows XP or Windows Office 2003 came up with the preloaded software so I had assumed that all activication was done by the OEM system builder.
I cleaned the drive on one machine and reloaded XP and Office 2003. When I got to the activication screen to register the XP I did not have an interconnect and modem working so I clicked out to do it later. When I did get it setup. XP is now telling me that "Windows is already activated" I didn't do it unless it did it without me knowing
When I loaded Office 2003 this time I got the activication window. Did not register the first time. After reboot and brought office word back up it gave me the screen again and said that I had only 49 more times I could activate it before it would deactivate. Registered and seems to be ok at this point. Now only have two more machines to fix
Also when this first started I was not sure what was happening just a thought it was a License problem. I was seaching for "Office or Word stopped working" "limited functions" and "license" on the knowledge base with no hits on my problem. The last thing I was thinking was something called a Activation or Wizzard. I think better Search words are needed for this type of problem to be able to find a resolution to a problem like this.

Send your suggestions to Microsoft at (e-mail address removed) - they do read
the alias and many of the suggestions that have come into that mailbox have
made it to product features - such as calendar coloring in XP and 2003. Put
MSKB Search in the subject line.

However, it may just be a matter of finding the correct key word or TLA that
will trigger the KB article. Posting the error .dll almost ALWAYS works,
using the word for what you are trying to do usually works, and then trying
obscure terms such as "UDP" when searching for why your inbox does not
refresh until you change folders is a talent gained by hard work and an
elephantine mind for details.

Thank you Milly Staples. Your suggestion worked. It was what I needed to get things working again.
The procedure did cause me some problems because some things would not let me delete. There is just a smal note in that document that you cannot have any parts of the program running in the background. Finding those was not very easy
Once I got the files and folders all removed. When I reintalled everything worked like it was suppose to with the proper screens to register
What just got me was that I pretty much new what the problem was from the start but I could not get one of Microsofts Gold OEM companies to believe what I was telling them and just being told "They had never seen a problem like this before". It took a lot of forceful talk to get them to realize the problem and to get them to own up to the problem once I found what the problem was and the solution you provided. I sure hope others have not had to spend the hours and frustration I have had to go through on such a small problem everyone in a service department should know about with with regards to what happens and how to correct a problem if something goes wrong with a License proceedure in Microsofts software.
Again Thank You for all your information and help. I hope to consider this problem closed.
