Office 2007 - Vista - Cannot Save to network drive

Dax,
Which did not work? The disable WebClient?

Emily, I have 26 new stations I will be putting up, I will try the
webclient solution. In your studies was that the only change or did you
find that a combination of settings was needed?

Peace,

Tom

Tom,

Turning off the webclient service did not work. Disabling the offline
files works, but you then lose that capability, which I need.

Hope this helps.

Dax,

I have 600 tablets - I can relate. I know a majority of my users would
want that functionality and I will be crossing that river when we
migrate these to Vista. I will continue hunting for a solution and post
here, unless someone else finds the answer first :)

Peace,

Tom

Hi dax_marvel,

When you disable offline file and then enable it to recreate the offline
cache, does the issue recur?

Does the issue only occur with the shared folder on a specific server (such
as a SBS server)? If so, what is the AV on the server, "CA ETrust
AntiVirus", or others? Please temporarily disable the AV to test the issue.

Also, turn off the Windows Desktop Search Add-In on the client computer to
test the issue.

Emily Lin

I have had these same problems too. I am using Vista Utlimate on a
laptop with a network share on a XPSP2 desktop through a home network.
|
| Disabling the Offline Files fixes the problem for me, but I need to use
the offline files as I am often away from home with my laptop and want
access to these files when I am gone.
|
| Please let me know if anyone comes up with a fix decide disabling
offline files.

Emily,
It looks like disabling the WebClient service solved the issue for me
(I also disabled offline files and folders per previous message
traffic). The fix didn't seem to work at first but when I came in to
work this morning, it seems to be working fine. I had rebooted my PC
before I left the office yesterday, so maybe that is part of the fix
(although it seems odd that the service was stopped and disabled but
still seemed to be stopping me from saving to a network share).

Yes, the problem recurs, exactlly as before.

Does the issue only occur with the shared folder on a specific server
(suchas a SBS server)? If so, what is the AV on the server, "CA ETrust
AntiVirus", or others? Please temporarily disable the AV to test the
issue.

I am doing this on a small home network (a desktop & a laptop). I have
a shared folder on the desktop which is running XP SP2. I am using
Symantec for AV and I have completely disabled the AV which has had no
effect.

Also, turn off the Windows Desktop Search Add-In on the client computer
to
test the issue.

I have not tried this. I will try tonight and let you know.

My company is using ZTI to deploy Vista & Office 2007, we have a use
base of 40,000+ US machines and are days away from going live.

Check the status of your Offline Files. If it says enabled, but i
says it won't become active until your next reboot, even after multipl
reboots, then it's probably corrupt. Edit the registry and reboot.

It took hours of troubleshooting to narrow the problem down, but thi
article explains a bug in ZTI. The article only talks about a folde
renaming issue, but the Office issue shares the same root cause.

The reg entry workaround resolved both issues in our environment:

Emily,

Turning off the Windows Desktop Search Add-In on the client compute
had no effect.

Still having the same problems. The only that has worked so far is th
disabling of offline files, but as I stated, this is not an option.

I am working around it, saving the file to the desktop and then copyin
and pasting the file into the shared folder.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Ian,

Have you tried to disable the webclient service and restart the comptuer?
If so, is the issue fixed? Also, you can try Toddler's suggestion about
adding a registry key to repair the client-side cache database that the
Offline Files feature uses.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

| | When the firewall is disabled, I believe that the same issue occurs.
| There

| |
| | Files can be saved locally without an issue.

Emily Lin [MSFT]

Hi Ian,

Nice to hear from you again.

I understand that you have checked the Anti-Virus, Firewall, WebClient
Service. However the issue persists. Please let me know if you check my
other suggestions:

#1 disable offline files
#2 turn off the Windows Desktop Search Add-In on the client computer
#3 Update all the programs on the computer
#4 Check the Temporarily Internet Files is on the Vista client instead of a
shared folder.
#5 Check if you can save files to a shared folder on other client computers
with Windows XP.

For detail steps, please check my previous replys.

If you have performed all the suggestions and the issue persists, I would
like to recommend you to save the Office 2007 files to the local hard disk
and then move it to the SBS server via Windows Explorer. Thanks for your
understanding.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

I

Ian Robert

Emily,

#1 disable offline files Yes these are not being used.
#2 turn off the Windows Desktop Search Add-In on the client computer Yes this is turned off.
#3 Update all the programs on the computer
All microsoft and other security updates etc have been applied.
#4 Check the Temporarily Internet Files is on the Vista client instead of a
shared folder.

Yes the Temp Internet files are stored locally.
#5 Check if you can save files to a shared folder on other client computers
with Windows XP.
Yes we are able to save with Windows XP fine.

So basically you are saying you can't solve my problem? We have this on
more than one Vista Machine and it basically means we can't use Vista to work.

Other people are having this issue is there nothing on the MS bug database?

:(

Ian

E

Emily Lin [MSFT]

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the detail information.

I didn't find the same issue in our MS bug database. Also, I cannot
reproduce this issue on my end.

My Testing:
client: Windows Vista, Office 2007.
Server: SBS 2003 with the latest updates. Create shared folder on the
server.

I can save to the shared folder in Office 2007.

Yes, there are other people encountered the similar issue. Some of them can
be fixed by disabling the offline files/stopping the web client services/or
other methods. I understand that the previous troubleshooting steps didn't
fix the issue. And you don't want to work around it by saving the file to
the local hard disk and then moving to the shared folder. Rest assured that
I will try my best to fix the issue with you.

Let's continue to the steps below.

#1: Let's me know the detail steps on your end to reproduce the issue. When
you try to save files to the shared folder in Office 2007, are you working
in a Terminal Services session in Windows Vista? If so, check the following
KB article to see if it is your situation.

936970 Error message when you try to save a document in a 2007 Office
program to a redirected drive in Windows Vista: "There has been a network
or file permission error"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;936970

#2 Run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file. Send it to me at
(e-mail address removed). The detail steps are in my first reply.

#3 Add a registry key to refresh he client-side cache database that the
Offline Files. If it doesn't fix the issue, remove the new added registry
key.
-----------------------------------------
1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click
regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type
your password or click Continue. 2. Locate and then click the following
registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters

Note If the Parameters subkey does not exist, create it. To do this, follow
these steps:
a. Click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc b. On the Edit
menu, point to New, and then click Key. c. Type Parameters, and then press
ENTER. 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4.
Type FormatDatabase, and then press ENTER. 5. On the Edit menu, click
Modify. 6. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK. 7. Exit
Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
#4 come into Windows safe mode with network to test the issue and let me
know the result.
-----------------------------
1. Restart your computer
2. Keep press F8, until the screen "Windows Advanced Options Menu" appears.
3. Press "Up arrow" in the keyboard to select "Safe Mode with Network",
press "Enter"

4. Start Office 2007. Try to save a file to the shared folder on the
server. What is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin

|
|
|
|
|
Some of them
can
| be fixed by disabling the offline files/stopping the web client
services/or
| other methods. I understand that the previous troubleshooting steps
didn't
| fix the issue. And you don't want to work around it by saving the file to
| the local hard disk and then moving to the shared folder. Rest assured
that
| I will try my best to fix the issue with you.
|
| Let's continue to the steps below.
|
| #1: Let's me know the detail steps on your end to reproduce the issue.
When
| you try to save files to the shared folder in Office 2007, are you
working
| in a Terminal Services session in Windows Vista? If so, check the
following
| KB article to see if it is your situation.
|
| 936970 Error message when you try to save a document in a 2007 Office
| program to a redirected drive in Windows Vista: "There has been a network
| or file permission error"
|
| #2 Run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file. Send it to me at
| (e-mail address removed). The detail steps are in my first reply.
|
| #3 Add a registry key to refresh he client-side cache database that the
| Offline Files. If it doesn't fix the issue, remove the new added registry
| key.
| -----------------------------------------
| 1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click
| regedit in the Programs list.
|
| If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type
| your password or click Continue. 2. Locate and then click the following
| registry subkey:
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters
|
| Note If the Parameters subkey does not exist, create it. To do this,
follow
| these steps:
| a. Click the following registry subkey:
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc b. On the Edit
| menu, point to New, and then click Key. c. Type Parameters, and then
press
| ENTER. 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4.
| Type FormatDatabase, and then press ENTER. 5. On the Edit menu, click
| Modify. 6. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK. 7. Exit
| Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
| #4 come into Windows safe mode with network to test the issue and let me
| know the result.
| -----------------------------
| 1. Restart your computer
| 2. Keep press F8, until the screen "Windows Advanced Options Menu"
appears.
|
|
|
| Regards,
|

to

Emily,

Although some of your suggestions appear to have worked for some of the
contributors to this thread, I have methodically tried everything suggested
by you and other contributors, but I still have the same issues and it is
driving me mad!

Has your research of this issue led you to other possible solutions? I am
ready to try anything...

Many thanks, in advance.

Robert

|
|
|
|
|
Some of them
can
| be fixed by disabling the offline files/stopping the web client
services/or
| other methods. I understand that the previous troubleshooting steps
didn't
| fix the issue. And you don't want to work around it by saving the file to
| the local hard disk and then moving to the shared folder. Rest assured
that
| I will try my best to fix the issue with you.
|
| Let's continue to the steps below.
|
| #1: Let's me know the detail steps on your end to reproduce the issue.
When
| you try to save files to the shared folder in Office 2007, are you
working
| in a Terminal Services session in Windows Vista? If so, check the
following
| KB article to see if it is your situation.
|
| 936970 Error message when you try to save a document in a 2007 Office
| program to a redirected drive in Windows Vista: "There has been a network
| or file permission error"
|
| #2 Run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file. Send it to me at
| (e-mail address removed). The detail steps are in my first reply.
|
| #3 Add a registry key to refresh he client-side cache database that the
| Offline Files. If it doesn't fix the issue, remove the new added registry
| key.
| -----------------------------------------
| 1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click
| regedit in the Programs list.
|
| If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type
| your password or click Continue. 2. Locate and then click the following
| registry subkey:
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters
|
| Note If the Parameters subkey does not exist, create it. To do this,
follow
| these steps:
| a. Click the following registry subkey:
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc b. On the Edit
| menu, point to New, and then click Key. c. Type Parameters, and then
press
| ENTER. 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4.
| Type FormatDatabase, and then press ENTER. 5. On the Edit menu, click
| Modify. 6. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK. 7. Exit
| Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
| #4 come into Windows safe mode with network to test the issue and let me
| know the result.
| -----------------------------
| 1. Restart your computer
| 2. Keep press F8, until the screen "Windows Advanced Options Menu"
appears.
|
|

Ian Robert

Hi Emily,

I think i've sorted the problem out, all thanks to your advice and steps.
To cut a long story short :-
The "Offiline files" was actually saying it was turned off but "my
documents" wasn't accessible. Turing on "offline files" and rebooting didn't
fix the problem, the "offline files" wouldn't actually activate. So I used
the registry key you gave to reset the offline files cache database. The
machines didn't reboot cleanly but after resetting the database, offline
files could be turned off and the my documents folder was accessible. So
working with offline files turned off, it was then possible to save
word/excel/office files to the network share (P: Drive) - The my documents
wasn't accessible with the network connection turned off because of course
they are re-directed to the server. So I turned them on and rebooted the
server, and on reboot the ActiveSync centre informed me that offline files
were available for first sync. So I sync'ed the files and rebooted and could
still save the word/excel documents and work on/off line with my documents.

So basically it was the offline file cache being corrupted and/or the
offline file sync status not being set correctly - I don't know how this
would have occured, the control panel applet was saying one thing but the
mydocuments and system behavour was saying another. But after resetting and
rebooting numerous times and going through the settings methodically..it's
all working now.

Fingers crossed!

I've not yet had a chance to chech if connecting to the PC Remotely using
Remote Access works, but if it doesn't then the Hotfix you mentioned would
seem to be the fix for this.

Phew - This was a tricky problem. Thanks for your help and guidance.

Regards

Ian

| mydocuments and system behavour was saying another.
|
|
|
