office 97 - a different setup issue

P

Pablo

I am familiar with the hatten.ttf problem and a few others. I have had to
overcome them to keep Office 97 running on our company's machines because
we use an old Access 97 database that we are not willing to upgrade ($$ not
available).

But I have now encountered a new problem. I place the disc in a Dell
Latitiude D820 running Windows XP SP2 and it brings up the install menu.
Click on install and nothing appears to happen. Bypass this by exploring
the disk and then clicking on setup.exe, and I get this error message: " D:
\Setup.exe The specified path does not exist. Check the path and try
again."

I tried running setup.exe from the dos prompt, same message. I tried
copying the entire cd to the hard disk, the error message changes to
(accurately) reflect the new path, but the message remains the same.

I have completely removed the antivirus program as I have seen this kind of
behavior caused by anti virus programs, but it still happens.

Worse yet, I have three of these machines fresh out of the box and one of
them installed flawlessly. (well I still had to do the hatten thing but
that's not the problem...) Yes, I did try to recreate the exact same
conditions on each before attempting setup.

I have looked in task manager while doing this and I see that a NTDVM
starts for everytime I click on setup.exe, but that is the only evidence I
can see on the machine that I have done anything. I tried running setup in
compatibility mode, no effect. I tried running setup from within the add
remove programs "add new programs" button. I always get this same error.

I feel I am now just thrashing at the problem and I can't believe I am the
only one to ever have had this problem. Good advice would help my mental
health greatly, as well as making my employers satisfied with my efforts.

Thank you.

Have you had any results with this? I am having the same problem with
a D620. If I can't get this done I'll need to go in a different
direction for other systems as I'm about to order two more. I checked
MS site but nada.

Thanks,

Chris

I've got the same problem, also on a D620. The first D620, I hit
Windows Update before installing Access 97, and got this error. My
second D620, the first thing I did was run Office 97's setup.exe. It
got the same error.
