Posting just for completeness of the thread.
After a fair number of bizarre scenarios, such as the update saying it
has failed whilst the apps claimed to be at SP1, problem/s have finally
been resolved by a combination of running a detect and repair and then
the LIS tool.
Hope this helps others, would suggest it as a first line of defence.
Sloan - thanks for your assistance.

Aston, I think it will be necessary to review the MSI log file to understand
the exact cause of your failure. It will be in the same location as the
other file you attached with a file name like 'OHotfix(0000x)_Msi.log' where
'x' is a number. The file is likely going to be pretty large; so put it in
a Zip file and send it to me in email ([email protected] - remove
'.online' from the email address before sending).

Sloan,
Log file attached. Look forward to hearing from you. Tried attaching the
MSI log too but made the message too large. If you need it let me know
and I'll email it.

Aston

It
will likely be the most recent of these files. It should be a relatively
small file (mine is only 4kb), and if you attach it in a reply, I'll
review
it.

Hi all,
Get the following error when installing the above:
"The update cannot be applied."
This is after the licence has been accepted and the files
are extracted and the "preparing to install"
and "Gathering required information" dialogs are displayed.
This on XP Pro SP1 fully patched, but without any SP2 RCs
etc.
SP1's for OneNote, Visio, Project and Outlook BCM have all
been applied succesfully.
Last Office Update run was last week when two updates,
office2003ptk-kb838022-client-enu.exe and project2003-
KB832887-FullFile-ENU.EXE had to be downloaded and applied
manually.
Running Office Update now it just silently kills IE.
The same error is generated if I run the full file or
client versions of the install.
The following text appears at the end of one of the logs:
The update failed.
Finished processing the update on 07/27/2004 at 17:19:08.
