We have the fix for you.

Part of the issue comes from upgrading from Outlook 2003 or earlier because
Outlook 2007 uses your account settings to create new ones for you. When you
upgrade to 2007 you will need to locate four .DAT files and rename them...


STEP 1: Turn off Outlook 2007 and Locate these files

For some reason, during the upgrade these four files can become corrupted -
the migration from 2003 to 2007 isn't the smoothest but not having to create
all your POP3 accounts again is excellent.

1. extend.dat - you will find this file in the location | Drive
Lettter:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat //change it to extend.old

2. views.dat - may not find it most of the time

3. frmcache.dat - Drive Letter:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\FORMS\FRMCACHE.DAT //change it to
FRMCACHE.old

4. outcmd.dat - C:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat //change it to OUTCMD.old


STEP 2: Restart Outlook 2007

1. Send yourself some test emails and watch the messages appear.


We contacted Microsoft Office 2007 support and workshopped this fix with
them. They did not hear of this problem until we made first contact.
Together, with the help of their support team (merv m. specifically), we
found this simple solution above in a matter of 40 minutes. I was very
impressed with their willingness to work through a fix together.

As of today, they do not have plans to create a patch for this small bug but
they are gathering bug fixes for a future service pack down the road. Right
now (MS said) their focus is building a service pack for VISTA's bugs.

It's certainly worth trying and it won't do any harm - each file will be
recreated by outlook as needed.

Those files are known to be easily corrupted and we often recommend deleting
or renaming them (and occasionally recommend renaming all the files in the
two Outlook folders under the user account) to fix specific problems, so
there is some precedence. Will it work for everyone? Hard to say - we'll
need more data to know... but since the problems seem to affect upgrades
more than new installs, it's worth a shot and is easier than our standard
suggestion - a new profile. It's also worth trying if a new profile didn't
help, since those files are not profile-specific.

I will be giving this a go later today.

We are using outlook 2007 trial version and the performance in an
exchange 2003 environment (XP on PCs) so far has not been good.

We tried all suggested fixes thus far but outlook is still running
very slow.

Hope someone is looking into this at MS.

Did not help at all here; Outlook 2007 still behaves like it's running on a
386 when opening mail, and very very slowly when closing a mail item.

HTML email is MUCH slower than plain text, but both are unacceptable
compared to Outlook 2003 and earlier versions.

This is with XP Pro SP2 on a Pentium D 820 with 1GB dual-channel RAM, by
the way.

After trying all the MVP suggestions to fix performance issues, this was the
one that fixed it for me. None of the others even made a millisecond of
difference!

Yes, my initial install of Office 2007 was an upgrade from Office 2003.

This was great...

I did however find that I only had to do part of the above. In short, All I
had to change was change the extend.dat file. Changing the rest for me only
made it worse.

It has made a definite improvement for my set-up, though there's probably
more to go. Looking at the CPU usage, before the changes CPU was stuck at
90% or over whilst receiving mail, now it fluctuates between 50% and 80%
when receiving.

FWIW the file locations with Outlook 2007 on Vista are:

extend.dat:

C:\Users\user-directory\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

OUTCMD.dat:

C:\Users\user-directory\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

i've been working with Office 2007 since it was in beta as well as
vista since build 52XX
today i'm on the latest released versions, but as much as i love vista
and office 2007 i had to:

Uninstall Outlook 2007 and revert back to 2003
Disable Aero Glass on Vista

HUGE performance problems.

and ..the funny part..

i'm running a DELL PRECISION 690 with TWO QUAD XEONS, 4GB Ram, 3 SAS
Drives in RAID 0 on a PERC5 controller, NVIDIA QUADRO FX with 512Mb
Ram

i get 5.9 through all the Vista Perfomance Indexes

and with Outlook 2007 i have to WAIT to open a message, sometimes it
even seemes to freeze!!

Jeez! MS...i love your products..but please..work harder on getting
them right in the first place

I have now spent A LOT of time on all of this.... I changed back the location
of my pst file to the default location, seemed to make a smidge of a
difference. I have uninstalled destop search 3, which seems to help a bit.
The big problem I have now is every time it sends and receives, it freezes
and takes an eternity to download, if I could resolve that 1 issue, I could
live with the rest. The only reason I updated was for the preview in reading
pane feature, certainly wasn't worth it!!

I have no idea why Microsoft has not publicized this: all you have to
do is open Outlook 2007, click the 'tools' tab/ trust center/ add-ins/
"go" (at the very bottom)/ and uncheck 'outlookaddin.' That's it! It
has solved ALL of my problems.

uninstalling it's done it for me. What a pity to have a new version of a
program that has extra features, but is riddled with problems that MS seems
to be doing nothing about.

It didn't work for me.
I upgraded from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 and now every time I
receive an email, even with Outlook and third-party antispam disabled,
my HD runs desperately for 20-30 seconds almost blocking the usability
of the whole Windows.
My PST is 5GB and my inbox contains atleast 50000 emails but it was
not a problem in Outlook 2003.

Try making your pst less than 1gb and see if it helps - it didn't for me, but
others say it is. Hope they fix it soon. Nice program, pity it doesn't
work!!! Wish someone from MS would actually do something about it - I've
heard from at least 50 people over various forums, with no fix. That would
have to equate to more than 1000 people I would think. Bad MS Bad
