outlook 2007 slow, hangs - fix from microsoft support

Man Of Miracles

Just one of many problems it would seem - this does not seem to be the reason
why outlook hangs for an eternity when receiving email messages - no-one
seems to know why or have a cure.....

Yep, lots of people have tried this and it's worked for some. I've tried it
and it made no difference at all. I'm using Office 2007 and Outlook 2003 -
absolutely ridiculous - you think someone from MS would be able to fix this -
if I were the only one it wouldn't be so bad, but I'm not and it seems it's a
relatively common problem

This has helped greatly. However, if I were to be in an environment
were those add-ins were used (Groove etc) it would be completely
useless. I notice that despite outlook gobbling up 250MB of memory
with a 20MB pst, it still takes up to 20 seconds the first time I open
up a new email message. After the first one things speed up.

Access denied to all folders

This post plus that of Ian Haynes seemed to have resolved the problem for me.

Does anyone have any answers to why Outlook 2007 is much much slower than
Outlook 2003?

I'm happy to inform you my friends that Microsoft yesterday has
released a fix to the performance issues in Outlook 2007 with large
pst/ost!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933493

Try it and don't forget to share your results here! (mentioning how
large is your file and how much performance improvement you had)

Has anyone tried to solve the speed problem by putting the PST file in
a (big) fast USB flash memory?

Try the Outlook Performance Update first.

Microsoft doesn't say that it solves 100% of the problem.
In any case since even Outlook 2003 takes several seconds of HD every
time I receive a message, I think it would anyway be of advantage to
use a flash memory.

What about a brand new machine (Dell XPS Core 2 Duo) with 4G RAM? Came
preloaded with Vista Ultimate/Office Professional. It takes me a good 10-20
seconds to review an email after selecting, same for double click opening.
While editing, I can type at least 2 sentences before it even shows up on the
screen. It is extremely frustrating dealing with email. If it makes any
difference, I have Business Contact Manager installed as well which I use
extensively for tracking accounts and opportunities. All other Office '07
programs are very efficient...........even the API to Word is
fast................finally!! Any suggestions to speed my outlook operations
would be fantastic. I archived ALL my email which didn't speed anything up
either.

After reviewing some more posts in here (which I admit I should have done
beforehand) I installed the performance upgrade, fantastic. Outlook runs
much better. Why doesn't this come automatically with office update???????

Install the Outlook Performance Update linked below and see if it
doesn't give you a better speed.

I'd be surprised if that would help.

Why? the fastest USB drives have a sequential speed not superior to
HDs but an access times under 1ms (vs the 5-13ms of the HDs).
Furtherfore you would have the PST on a different drive, so that
Windows can read/write on it in parallel.
