Outlook 2007 worth it

I second that. I don't mind paying for additional functionality, and I
don't even mind paying Patrick for this per se (you've obviously done a LOT
of work), but it's kind of like buying a car and than having to pay extra
for the speedometer (studies show that no one really pays attention to
it...).

I'm glad our firm isn't upgrading to the end of the year at the earliest -
perhaps Microsoft will have some of this fixed by then.

The problem with this, if I recall, is that another add-in could
reinstate

the built in group since it is impossible to 'turn off' a built in group,
only hide it. Aside from that, this means recreating an entire group just
to remove and/or resize one or two items, as well as the ribbon not really
functioning very well (perhaps a fair trade off for customization, but yet
one more thing to have to life with in 2007). I'm thinking of Word's

Yes to all of the above. There are issues with doing this, but if you do
this to your own ribbon, you can handle what other add-ins might do. An
actual add-in doing any of this automatically (meaning without the
user's knowledge) however is a serious problem.

ridiculous home toolbar; the clipboard group I don't need at all, and 2/3rds
of the font group is pretty much useless for me. Probably only half of the
paragraph group is wasted space. I find it double-speak on Microsoft's part

Hide the clipboard group and make a combined font & paragraph group.
While you are at it, add the Styles drop-down to it..that thing is
sorely missing on the ribbon.

Has anyone at Microsoft suggested either licensing your tool or purchasing
it outright and providing it free to users? That, obviously, assumes you'd
want to do that.

Nope, and I seriously doubt they will. Office has always had a large
ecosystems of applications around it, so this is a pretty normal thing.
The furthest Microsoft goes is listing my add-in on Office Marketplace
(part of Office Online). I haven't checked recently, but my listing
should be up there by now.

Yes, they are hardcoded. But nothing stops you from making your own group
that has the buttons large and hiding the built-in one. When you resize
the window, those groups will not collapse but rather you'll get a big
scroll button in the ribbon and the ribbon becomes scrollable.

I'm not counting on getting customization, but as more users (especially
enterprise users) start complaining it seems like even Microsoft will have
to do something - unlike the beta these people will be paying for Office. As
for Microsoft purchasing your tool, that isn't out of the realm of
possibility - Lookout became desktop search.

Windows Vista removed Outlook Express from my desktop. If Outlook 2007 still
doesn't have a NNTP news reader, how do I get Outlook Express back?

It would really have been "worth it" if Outlook 2007 had included an NNTP
news reader, but it didn't.

The successor product of Outlook Express is called Windows Mail. Look
for that, it should still have NNTP support.
