Preview In Browser - ASP & PHP pages

E

Earl Partridge

FP2000, Windows XP Pro

I've addressed this problem before, thinking it was an IIS problem, but now
I
have confirmed that IIS is working properly.

When I attempt to Preview In Browser an .asp file, the html code is shown.
Refresh will bring up a blank pate.
When I attempt to Preview In Browser a .php file, I get a blank page.

Both files work file with http://localhost/filename

When I attempt to Preview In Browser a .php file, I get a blank page.

IIS doesn't do PHP.

How are you doing the preview, explicitly? And what do you see in the
browser address field when you do it?

E

Earl Partridge

Hmmm, the PHP install text file indicates ISS will do PHP...
"The Windows PHP installer is available from the downloads page at
http://www.php.net/downloads.php. This installs the CGI version of PHP
and for IIS, PWS, and Xitami, it configures the web server as well.
The installer does not include any extra external PHP extensions
(php_*.dll) as you'll only find those in the Windows Zip Package and
PECL downloads."

I have also downloaded all those .dll files and extensions.
Maybe a version other than "CGI"???

For the .asp file, I open the .asp file in FP, then click the Preview in
Browser
button. The URL shows " C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\test.asp

Perhaps I haven't described it properly. Using Internet Explorer, I can go
to http://localhost/filename or http://computername/filename and they open
properly. Its while I am in FrontPage, where I used to be able to Click
"Open In Browser" and they would open as though I the localhost option.
But now, when I try Preview In Browser... they don't open.

And are you in a FP site working under a local server http://localhost/ or http://computername/
- not just opening the file in FP

Guess I'm not understanding your question about being in a FP site
working under a local server....

I am working strictly in FP. I open the file, the Preview In Browser when
I get the blank page.

I do have IIS installed on my machine, so when I do open IE and go
to http://localhost the page displays correctly.

I think I understand, but check me out... I open FrontPage.
In the File Name box I enter: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test.asp
FrontPage opens and my test.asp page appears.
I click Preview In Browser.
The html code appears.
I refresh.
The screen is blank.

That's how you are supposed to view it.

I do have IIS installed on my machine, so when I do open IE and go
to http://localhost the page displays correctly.

When you open it like that you're opening it as a disk-based web. You need
to open it in FrontPage as File, Open Site, http:\\localhost This will open
it as a server-based web and now you should be able to test your ASP pages.

OK, instead of clicking the Open Folder Icon, I click File and my option
is to "Open Web" vs "Open Site". I click "Open Web", type in
http://localhost. I then load the file, Preview In Browser with the same
results
I've been getting... the html code.

I "Open Web", type in http://localhost/test.asp and get an error that it is
not
accessible.

I do have XP Pro, IIS is installed, FP extensions are installed.
So David Berry's comment to open it in FrontPage with FIle | Open Site
was incorrect? I can open the file using the browser and I see what I
expect to see. I was hoping to be able to work within FrontPage and
edit the file and Preview it without having to swtich between FP and IE.
But that seems not to be an option.

The only way to Preview an ASP page is to Preview it in your browser as
http://webname/pagename.asp

You open the site in FrontPage and then when you open the page in FrontPage
and click Preview in Browser it should work. You said you were opening the
site as c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test.asp. Since that isn't opening a
server-based site the Preview in Browser won't work. That's why I was
saying to open it as http://localhost - so you could use FP and choose
Preview in Browser

You may have corrupted the extensions by opening the web as a disc based
web.
If you have FP2002 extensions installed, use
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Microsoft SharePoint Administrator
Click Administration for your web site (Default web) then Go to
administration page.
Run check server health, and check all the boxes.

If FP2000 extensions, use
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Internet Information Services
Expand the folder tree in left column
Right click on web site (Default Web Site)
Choose All Tasks->Check Server extensions
Allow security to be tightened.

You're switching to IE anyway when you go "Preview in Browser" What's the
difference, between clicking "preview in browser" and just typing the URL?
You're still viewing it in the browser regardless (a hint: make your
http://localhost site your browser's home page, then all you click is the
"home" button to get the site to load).

| Guess I'm not understanding your question about being in a FP
site
| working under a local server....
|
| I am working strictly in FP. I open the file, the Preview In
Browser when
| I get the blank page.
|
| I do have IIS installed on my machine, so when I do open IE and
go
| to http://localhost the page displays correctly.
