.PST File in Outlook Express 6

B

Bobby

I tried exporting mail yesterday and each time I did the export the local
file outlook.pst grew by 9MB.

File is Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook/outlook.pst
How do I clean up this file?
Is there an easy way to backup Outlook Express 6 Mail data?

Outlook Express doesn't use the Outlook PST file.

Beg to differ, if you remove the file, Outlook express will not work.
Message headers still show up but the messages cannot be opened.

Afraid you are plain wrong Outlook uses pst files, Outlook Express is a
completely different program and uses dbx files

Give it a try - when I was trying to export mail yesterday I ended up with
the outlook.pst file growing each time I did the export.

I deleted the .pst file and Outlook Express no longer worked.

I copied the .pst file to a memory stick, took it to my desktop (Outlook
2003) and import the mail from the file. There were 5 copies of every
message.

I deleted all the duplicates and compacted the file in Outlook (down to 9MB)
copied it back to my memeory stick, copied the file back to my laptop
(Outlook express).
and it works fine.

Outlook Express on my Win XP Home Laptop is using this file for something.

Are you ABSOLUTELY certain that it is Outlook EXPRESS that you have on your
laptop and not Outlook? (Do help-about). I re-iterate what DL says - Outlook
EXPRESS does not, and CANNOT, use a pst file. It never has and it never
will.

Why are you posting about Outlook Express in an Outlook newsgroup?

Sorry, Outlook Express, which is a different program, does NOT use pst.
That is exclusive to Outlook. OE use .dbx files.

Others, sorry but I am using Outlook Express version 6. I just dchecked the
..pst file size and before deleting 6 messages in my inbox and clearing
deleted items the file size was 9.161mb. After deleting the 6 messages the
file size was 8.94mb and date stamped with the current time.

I'm using this forum because that was where I was directed.

Regardless of what you all are saying the .pst file is used by Outlook
Express.

No NO NO! OE does NOT I repeat NOT, NOT, NOT use pst files. Please accept

Outlook Express does NOT use a pst file, not now or ever; you can export
Express msgs to Outlook and its pst file only if Outlook is configured on
the same PC.
The size of a pst file is not a finite indicator of its contents.

Sorry, Bobby. Nobody can help you anywhere, because the PST file is for
Outlook, not Outlook Express. You either don't get it or you are
intentionally trolling this group.

If you have ever heard of Google, you might start there.

Yes - I have run OE since v4. it has ALWAYS used *.dbx files. Versions 5 and
6, the latest, also use *.dbx files. NOT PST FILES. OE cannot use a pst
file. It won't read it, it won't do anything with it at all.

I have also run Outlook since v 97. THAT uses a *.pst file

Whatever you are doing, you are doing something other than what you THINK
you are doing. OE does NOT use pst files. PERIOD.

Now just stop this ridiculous assertion and re-post your OE problem in an OE
group.

Yes I do run Outlook Express and no it doesnt use a pst file

Disagree all you want. That doesn't make it the truth. I run Outlook
Express on many PCs where there are no PSTs at all.
