Publish a Web site by using ftp with Publisher 2007

D

Debi

I have followed the directions from the website to publish to my website. I
have opened file then Clicked Publish to web, then went to tools and clicked
on Map Network Drive. I selected numerous drives, but I cannot select
"Finish". I can only select cancel.. What do I need to do? I have also done
the following. Selected File, Publish to Website, save, then a window comes
up "Publishing to HTML" but this doen't publish to my ftp. I have also done
this File, publish to website, save in, selected ftp://ftp......, FTP logon
box comes up and I put in my password, OK, ftp://ftp.... is in Save In, save,
box comes up saying Publishing HTML files, another box comes up saying
Saving. Nothing happens so I cancel. Box comes up saying: Publisher couldn't
save the file to the web. Check URL or Network connection and try again. I
am so frustrated because when I use Publisher 2000 I can publish to the ftp,
but the images are blurry and disfigured. Any help would be greatly
appreciated as I have spent hours creating my sight and trying to Publish it.
Thanks!

Here's a little help on using Publisher 2000 and the images issue.

Do not adjust the size of an image in Publisher 2000 file. If you want
enlarge or decrease the size of an image, resize the image file itself using
an image editor like the free Infanview program. (Also great for creating
transparent images).

I have no experience with other versions of Publisher but there are some
very fine MVPs here that will be happy to share some thoughts on your other
issues.

I am a bit confused with your statement
"when I use Publisher 2000 I can publish to the ftp,....."

Are you still using Publisher 2000, or are you using a newer version?
What OS are you using?
What Brower are you using?
What is your URL?
Who is hosting the web space?

Have you tried to publish to the web designating a folder on your hard drive
for the htm files?
If so does the site look OK when you open it from there?
If it looks OK there have you tried to FTP those files it to your server?

I want to use Publisher 2007 since I upgraded from Publisher 2000.
OS is XP
Brower: Explorer
URL: Do you mean ftp://glasshappyonline.com
Hosting: godaddy
I don't know what you mean by tried to publish to the web designating a
folder on your hard drive for the htm files? Can you explain so that I can
try this?
I appreciate your response.

I was just repeating what the instructions were on their website for
Publisher 2007 and this is what it said:
Publish a Web site by using FTP
Before following this procedure, contact your ISP or system administrator to
get the information that you need to publish to an FTP site. You also have to
create an FTP site in FTP Locations.

1. On the File menu, click Publish to the Web.
2. In the Publish to the Web dialog box, click Tools, and then click Map
Network Drive.
3. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, do the following:
 In the Drive list, click a drive letter. You can choose any available
letter.
 To connect every time that you log on to your computer, select the
Reconnect at logon check box.
 Click Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and
pictures
4. In the Add Network Location Wizard, click Next, click Choose a custom
network location, and then click Next.
5. In the Internet or network address box, type the address of the FTP site
(for example, type ftp://ftp.microsoft.com), and then click Next.
NOTE If you cannot connect to a network drive or folder, the computer
might be turned off or you might not have the correct permissions. If you
can't connect, contact your network administrator or ISP.
6. If you do not want to log on anonymously, clear the Log on anonymously
check box, type a user name in the User name box, and then click Next.
7. Type a name for this network location, and then click Next.
8. Click Finish.

After you have created your web pages
Select > File
Publish To The Web
Select the folder on your hard drive where you want to put the
htm files
Example "Documents/Publisher Files
Default name for files will be index.htm
Do not select Tools map a drive at this point
Select Save
You should have the index.htm files and a sub folder "index_files"
containing the supporting pages and files. This is the default for 2007.

The next step is to FTP those files to the godaddy server
I looked at http://glasshappyonline.com/
Is this the site that you are working on? I also see that it was not
created using publisher.

If you are not familiar with FTP, Godaddy recommends using FileZilla for
transferring files form your computer to the web site. This is a free
program and is available at
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

Yes, I am trying to upload the file with Filezilla, but I am having an issue
with that.

Thank you for your patience with me and your help. Once I understand the
process I will be fine. I thought I could upload the files from Publisher
2007. Now I understand why they were not. I downloaded Filezilla and filled
out host, username and password. Then info was filled automatically into the
“Filename†box on the right. I went to the†local site†box and selected
where I saved the index. files. I double clicked on “index.files†and it
opened all of the files into the “Filename†box. I selected all of the files
in the “Filename†box, then selected “uploadâ€. It was uploading the files. I
went to my website and there is a 403 Forbidden error. I have left the site
as is so that you could see the error. I went to the GoDaddy Hosting to see
if all of those files had uploaded into File Manager and they have. Do I
need to do something on the GoDaddy?

You up loaded the "index_files"
Did you also upload or create the folder "index_files" on the server?
In order for the site to work you must have all those files in that folder.

Did you upload the "index.htm" file in the root directory? This is your
home page that you see when you open the site.

Hang in there Debi, we will get it working for you.

Spike! Check out www.glasshappyonline.com!!!! I uploaded the files within
"index.files" not the folder the first time. All of the files within
"index.files" were not in a folder, which they needed to be. Got It! When I
make corrections, which I see that I need to do. Do I follow this same
process each time? If so, I guess the new files would replace the old files
on the server? The pictures are loading slowly. Is that because the original
pictures are 1224x1776? If so, should I reduce the size before I put them on
my website? You are awesome! Debi

Try compressing the images using publisher

In publisher go to help and type in COMPRESS

Instructions there may help you out

Let us know it that helps If that does not help it load faster there are
other methods such as what you suggested shrinking images. I use
http://www.irfanview.com/
Another free program

AND Yes each time you update the site you MUST reload the site using FTP
You will be a PRO in no time :)

You have two pages called Necklaces
One is blank. The one with the pictures on it needs some adjustment
The work neck lass is chopped off at the bottom.
Try running design checker before you republish
Sometimes you can catch things like that there

Spike,
Ya, I saw that I had 2 necklace pages. I thought I would use it. I have
now removed it. Design checker is great. I will definately use that.
Thanks for everything! You have made my day. It will be nice when I have the
pages like I want them, cuz it is alot of work. Debi

When compressing with Irfanview, if all the images are the same size, use
the BATCH function (compress by percentage of original). It will do them
all at the same time, placing the compressed copies in a sub folder thus
leaving the originals in tack.

You should also make them the dimensions you want to use, and then optimize
them, then use in your design.

And to add to the comments, you might choose jpg instead of gif for your
images. They will be better quality. Gif images have limited colors. Also,
when you optimize the images use 96 dpi, as that is the Publisher default.
