Return button not working

K

I've posted this many times , and have never gotten an answer, but I keep
trying as this is so annoying.

When I go to print in Word, the return button on keyboard, usually does not
work-- to get the print job going. Wondering anyone has any ideas on that.

I sometimes get that on v.X. -- Very rarely. A restart of Word restores
it. Next time I get it, I'm going to try relaunching the finder first.
It is not only Word that gets the sulks like that.

Have you got lots of haxies and keyboard shortcut gizmos installed?

Hello!

Unfortunately this is a known issue with Word 2004. Currently the only work
around would be to click the mouse button.

Elliot:

Yes, rebooting solves the problem, but after a few days or so, it comes
back!

I also notice that I often will not get a new blank document with command N,
but have to use mouse and go to file, new blank document. They seemed to be
intertwined.

Again, rebooting solves problems, until a few days pass.

I don't know what haxies are (what are they?), but I do have Drag Thing for
a few shortcuts, and a Logitech mouse, but I have a feeling it's not related
to those things.

This problem was plaguing me in Office X. AND I WAS SURE IT WOULD BE GONE

I have DragThing and it doesn't create any problems.

Why would you think that? It's not a bug in X, and it's not a bug in 2004.
No one else has these problems in either app. So upgrading won't make any
difference. I suspect you have a corrupt Normal template - and Normal gets
imported from X along with the upgrade. In 2004 it's been moved to
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data, but if you still have Office X and/or 2001
or earlier on your computer it will just be found and re-imported again. Use
"Find" in the Finder to find all files called "Normal". Rename every single
one, wherever they are. Then re-launch Word. That will create a clean Normal
in the MUD folder and your problems may be gone. (If you have any macros you
need back in the renamed Normal use Organizer to move them over. Then check
you haven't brought the corruption back too.)

A Haxie is equivelent to a third party Control panel or extension. Usually an
extension.

one on the More famous Haxie's is from a company called Unsanity. Its called:
Appearance Enhancement or (APE). This allows OSX to use components it wouldn't
otherwise. I use a Control panel called "SILK" which causes OSX to display fonts on
on a CRT or LCD screen much as they would using Adobe TypeManager with antialiasing
turned off. It "DeFuzzies" the fonts viewed on the screen caused by the Quartz PDF
system OSX uses in place of Quicktime. Saves tremendously on eye strain caused by
the fuzzies. In any event with outh the aid of APE it wouldn't work as it should.

What name would I use to rename normal with. Does it not have to be Normal?

Why would renaming a file make it not corrupt?

Because renaming it causes a "new" Normal template to be created.

The reason you remame it as opposed to trashing it is so you can rename it back to
original name after trashing the new version if it doesn't make a difference. You
have an easy way of preserving the defaults you created.

Kevs,

Phillip's response is correct but this may help:

You can rename Normal to anything. I usually use OldNormal.

The point is that if it's not called Normal, Word won't "see" it and will be
forced to create a fresh, new, definitely not corrupt Normal. Then, if it
turns out that the new Normal doesn't solve the problem, you can trash it
and rename OldNormal back to Normal, thus preserving any customizations you
might have.

Note: You must quit out of Word before doing this procedure or it won't
work.

I suggest you read the following article to learn more about the Normal
template: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/MacWordNormal.htm>

(If you're using Safari, you may have to hit Reload once or twice. IE will
be fine.)

I just changed my name of normal, and have been working off a default normal
for a few days. Then on about day 4, the problem appeared: could not get a
new blank document with a command N, and could not print document with
return key.

Kevs,

I think you're going to have to accept Jeffrey Weston's original statement
that this is a known issue in Word 2004 and that you'll have to use the
mouse (or these temporary workarounds like restarting Word or creating a new
Normal template). Hopefully this will get fixed in an update to Office 2004
before too long. Till then, I guess you'll have to live with it. Sorry.

Beth,

I just wanted to add my two cents! I can count on one finger the number of
times that Word 2004 has "unexpectedly quit" on me when I have pressed
"return" in the print dialogue box rather than use the mouse. Am I that
unusual? In fact, overall I have had no real issues with the whole Office
2004 suite. I love it! Knock on wood and keep my fingers crossed!

Jeff (or anyone else who might know) -

How can something be a "known bug" when many/most of us have never seen this
problem with our installations? I guess I'm asking for it, but maybe by
saying that I have unjinxed myself. Of course, now that I've said that ....

Best,

- Bill

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately, it's easy. Every system is different and for some reason
bugs show up in certain configurations and not in others. The reason is a
puzzle, but it happens all too frequently. Unfortunately, it can mean that
the bug never gets fixed because if MS can't replicate it reliably, then
they can't determine what causes it.

I, for instance, am a victim of Office 2001's schizo cursor bug. My cursor
commonly looks like a clock when it should be an arrow, or a hand when it
should be a clock. This doesn't happen to everyone in Office 2001; only the
privileged few ;-).

The famous Word 2001 disappearing menus bug is another. This one does seem
to happen to most users sooner or later but no one was ever able to figure
out what triggers it, so there was no way to fix it. The workaround is to
trash your preferences (in my case about 3 times a year <sigh>).

Read this blog entry from MS's Rick Schaut for a fascinating account of what
it took to track down the Disk Full bug:

I think they probably _did_ track it down and fix it - just not in time for
the last release of Office 2001 before adopting the "pro-Apple" policy of
supporting the move to OS X by ceasing development work for Classic
products. Those bugs don't occur in Office X or 2004. Ergo, they either
fixed them when converting the code base to Carbon for Office v. X, or the
bugs just luckily disappeared by themselves when the system changed under
it. I know which version I think is more likely...
