Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SP1 isn't recognized by the autoupdater, nor does the standalone recognizes the installed 12.0.1 version. Makes me remember the issues with the 12.0.1 update :)

It's not an issue. The SR1 is not *yet* available for Auto-Update. You
can either wait a few days or get it manually from the Mactopia website.

What do you mean, SP1 isn't recognized? AutoUpdate isn't finding it, or
you already installed it but AU doesn't show it as installed?

What do you mean by the standalone doesn't recognize the installed
12.0.1 version?

I just downloaded from Mactopia, and it tells me that it can't find a
version of Office to update. More specifically it says: "You cannot install
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the
software required to install this update was not found on this volume."

Shades of the 12.0.1 update. I did install the 12.0.1 update from the file
downloaded from Mactopia when Auto Update wouldn't find it, but I shouldn't
imagine that would matter.

Here we go again.

According to what you just wrote, you have re-downloaded and are trying
to re-apply 12.0.1.

Please look at the Additional Information link at Mactopia Downloads for
12.1 and make sure that you have not moved or renamed pieces of the
application.

Ok for SP1 not yet available trough autoupdate yet, but the standalone updater downloaded from the Mactopia site doesn't recognise the installed 12,0,1 version, can't accurately translate the error message as i'm running the Dutch language version of Office (on a Dutch OS X 10.5.4).

The problem I am seeing is that after completion of the update I cannot launch any of the Office apps; they begin to open and then the Office Setup program takes over and the app that was beginning to launch, quits. Have completed the office setup but every time I try and open an Office app the Setup program highjacks the process. So now I have a fully updated suite of apps that I can no longer open or use. Just what I was hoping for.

I am having the same problem as "a adams." furthermore, the update causes the processes "mds" and "mdworker" to reeve up insanely...taking up nearly 100% of cpu and overheating the system.

only stopped after about 10 min.

Same with me. Trying to open Excel, Word or PowerPoint results in a dialog asking me to join or not join an "anonymous customer improvement" program, then launches Auto Update, which finds nothing.

The actual program never launches, and I'm stuck in this infinite and ridiculous loop.

All this on a standard Office 2008 install with the 12.0.1 update(s) installed.

Thanks, Daiya - the names are so similar I didn't notice the mistake. I
downloaded Office2008-1201UpdateEN.dmg, but the correct update is
Office2008-1210UpdateEN.dmg. Downloading the correct file now.

Maybe MS needs to name the packages so it's clear what you're getting, like
Office2008-SP1.dmg.

A good idea. Let MS know this is confusing and make that suggestion
here, or via Help | Send Feedback in any app.
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/suggestions.mspx

That said, be aware that others are having problems with the update,
while some report no problems. Ideally, you'll have a clone or Time
Machine so that you can easily rollback to pre-update, but at the least,
do some basic maintenance before running it--shut down the computer,
repair permissions, quit all apps and don't use the computer while updating.

A number of people have reported this problem. Have you already tried
restarting the computer? Do you get the same results if you try to
launch a program by opening a document instead of from the Dock?

There is no OS 10.5.4?

The other person reporting this issue (I think) had accidentally
downloaded the 12.0.1 update instead of the 12.1.0 update--very similar
names. Could that be the case with you?

Do any of these apply to you?

[from the MS site, on the downloads page]
Additional Information
If you have trouble installing this update or using Office 2008
applications after you install them, try the following:

Make sure that the Microsoft Office 2008 folder is located in the
Applications folder on the startup volume. If it is at another location
on your computer, move it to the Applications folder on your startup
volume, and then try installing the update again.

Make sure that you downloaded the correct language version of the update
for your copy of Office.

Restart your computer and try installing the update again.

Make sure that the user account you use to authenticate the update
installer is an administrator account. For more information about
administrator accounts, see Mac Help.

If you rename or modify any of the files in the Microsoft Office 2008
folder, you cannot install product updates. To correct this issue, drag
the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash, and then reinstall Office
2008 from your original installation disk.

Have you already tried restarting the computer?

If you try to launch a program by opening a document instead of from the
Dock, does it still force you into the Setup Assistant?

What if you try launching in a different user account?

Had already implemented all your suggestions, including launching the apps from the MS folder and not the dock. Permissions repaired, caches cleaned, Mac maintenance routines (daily, weekly and monthly) run, booted in safe mode and still no happiness. Even re-installed Office cleanly and re-ran the updates and still the same result. Mac G5, PPC.

I'm getting the same problem. I installed the update and now when I open any of the programs various ways, it just opens up the setup assistant and no matter which open I click it still takes me to the auto update and never let me open the program. I have restarted, tried to open with finder, file, quicksilver, dock etc and none of it works. When I tried to reinstall the update it wouldn't let me.

What version of OS and processor, please?

Did you try in a different user account?

What do you mean by "wouldn't let me"? What error message did you get?

What version of Office is this? Full, Home and Student, standard retail
or volume license, etc?
