Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Thank chaos, I'm not going crazy. I was finally able to "downgrade" to 12.0 and could open everything BUT Entourage. It keeps telling me the rules file is corrupt or somehow broken and won't launch now, period.

When I try to update to 12.1 via Auto Update, it gets stuck on examining additional volumes, despite the fact I turned off any external drives and I can't let it sit for hours to see if it finally recognizes the main drive.

Sounds just like the good ol' days of windoze and those SP installations. If I'd known it was going to break things, I would've left well enough alone. Microshafted again.

Thanks Daiya, that suggestion didn't work either, gone reinstall Office as a
last recours... Never had those kind of 'opportunities' with any of the
Office 2004 updates (went trough all of them). I'll leave a message if not
succesful.

And the 10.5.4 was a typo, should have been 10.5.2 :)

Coming in at the end of this thread....

Was this fix mentioned to install when "there was nothing to update"

Launch the updater

Drag the installer to your desktop.

Eject the virtual disk.

Run the updater from the installer on your desktop.

i'm using 10.5.2 MBP Core duo. I tried in another user account, same thing. And it said "You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 update 12.1.0 on this volume. a version of the software required to installt his update was not found on this volume." Could it be referring to 12.0.1? I I have that installed.

Can everyone seeing problems with the update please post their exact OS
version and processor information along with reports? 10.4? 10.5? PPC?
Intel?

What I'm wondering is, IF this problem is finally resolved will I LOSE all the data stored in Entourage, as I have tons of events, contacts and stored mail messages??? Since Entourage won't launch as I said in the aforementioned message, I can't tell if everything is still intact after reinstalling the original 2008.

It's not like you can export a PST file before performing one of these updates and hope it works. Hopefully since enough people have brought this glitch up, we will be able to download a working version of this SP and have it complete the installation without destroying data?

Yes the fix was mentioned when 'there was nothing to update', updater is the
right language, everything at the original location, no files renamed or
moved, hope this isn't a problem with the NL version again :)

This is exactly the same problem i had with 12.0.1 update, removing and
reinstalling worked then, hopefully it will now do so too. Will report back
anyhow, tomorrow thou.

Never Mind, I turned my brain on and went into the Documents/2008 Identities/ and replaced the corrupted rules file with the last backup done in March with the dB Utility and I can open Entourage again. I guess I will leave well enough alone, if I can't restore it to 12.0.1 again because it works.

Well, but you can export an archive, though I'm not sure if you lose
maybe some links with an archive. I always just duplicate my identity
folder, and then I have an uncorrupted backup I can roll back to if
necessary.

My tips when doing an Office update and/or upgrade of the Identity.

1) Archive (zip) your Office folder prior to updating.
2) Backup your Main Identity prior to updating in case there is a database
upgrade. Once a database is upgraded, it will not work on a prior version.

With these simple steps, it's easy to revert and your data is safe.

Another poster reported this fix for the Trapped in Setup
Assistant/AutoUpdate Loop. Can one of the people reporting the Setup
Assistant/AutoUpdate Loop problem test and confirm whether it helps them?

move these two files to the trash:

[username]/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office

2008 Settings.plist

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

then start an app - put in serial number.

after that it starts the MS update again and then it should work

If that works, can you save the invalid plist files somewhere--MS might
want them to help prevent the problem occurring in the future.

Ya that didn't work, I'm going to try reinstalling 12.0.1, then 12.1.0. I'm
really quite disappointed in this version of office. it hasn't given me
anything but problems

Just posted this fix:

[Office 2008 SP1] install causes setup assistant to loop

This situation is a result of when the Office Setup Assistant detects that
an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008. David Pelton,
Microsoft MacBU core lead test has outlined how to fix the problem and
requests users to contact him with info that will help chase down the issue
to keep it from happening in the future.

You will find details here:

Here is what I found.
I had run a language pack utility to save disk space. Of course it delete
the 40000 languages that came with office. this was not allowing me to
update. Without uninstalling anything I through the office disk in, let in
install. Then ran the update and it load sp1.
Hope this helps.

I'm getting the same problem. I installed the update and now when I open any of the programs various ways, it just opens up the setup assistant and no matter which open I click it still takes me to the auto update and never let me open the program. I have restarted, tried to open with finder, file, quicksilver, dock etc and none of it works. When I tried to reinstall the update it wouldn't let me.

The reason this happens is if you do not have a valid Product Key, or you have the Office 2008 Beta version installed. If you have Office 2008 Beta then the only way to fix this is to get a retail copy of Office 2008. If you have a valid copy of Office 2008, you would need to remove the Microsoft preferneces and remove the licensing information only and reenter in your Product Key.
