Spell check not working in Office 2007

S

Spjika

I have installed our updated Office 2007 on my computer only to test before I
consider rolling it out to 20 users. Overall happy but the spell check is
garbage- first noticed it in Outlook, now checked it in Word- the custom
dictionary is running and English US is selected but it missed any mis-spelt
words. The following phrase passes the spell check in every application:

Whoy doesn’t microsoft know what the fark it is doing?

I have checked all my settings and it looks ok, the spell check just seems
to be no-operative, help please!

Installing Office 2007 breaks Spell Check

The best way around this is to install a 3rd party spell check

First, click the Microsoft Office Button, close it, and see if spell check
begins to work. (Believe it or not, there's a slight bug with spell check
and the Microsoft Office Button, you need to click it once for it to start
working. Note that this only applies to new installations and it will only
happen once.)

If that doesn't work then if no custom spell checker have been installed on
the computer, exit Word, and then backup and delete the following registry
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\ProofingTools\1.0\Override\en-US

This key will be rebuilt the next time you start Word.

This applies to Outlook Express only, not Word or Outlook 2007. :)

Ooops my bad. So many post Outlook when they mean OE that sometimes reading the 1st line I tend to jump on the wrong answer.

Thanks Beth for pointing it to me

Considering the missing proofing tools (well....I guess if you want French
you're fine) in Outlook Express is a FAQ it's easy to do. :)

Thank you Beth! It was Outlook and word, not OE by the way, not sure how
that got started.

Your reg edit fixed it, now my rotten spelling is again revealed in every MS
product!

Thanks!!!

OK, Beth, but what about if in 2003 I had a custom medical dictionary
installed? Now my spell checker won't work, and the medical dictionary isn't
an available option.

V

Sorry about that, it's 2007 now. I upgraded from 2003. I have subsequently
gotten the generic dictionary to work, but the medical one (from dorland)
never loaded. Hmmmm.

Did you use these steps for manually adding the custom dictionary?

- Click the Microsoft Office Button
- Click Word Options
- Click Proofing
- Click the Custom Dictionaries button
- Click Add and navigate to your custom dictionary file

Thanks so much for your help. It took me a while to figure out how to do it,
but it works! I'm so glad to see all the errors that I type!

Thanks Beth!

I am having a problem with Outlook 2007 spell check not working. All my
settings are correct. It seems to work sporatically. My Word 2007 spell
checking is working correctly. My e-mail messages are created in HMTL could
this be causing the problem? It will not automatically check as I have
selected, then when I manually check spelling I get a message saying omplete,
and ignored text marked do not check (I don't ahve any text marked do not
check). Please help this is making me a little crazy :)

Should I try the register fix noted in the earlier e-mail.....will this work
form Outlook or only WORD?

B

Beth Melton

Based on your error message (which is always helpful!) the Registry fix
isn't what you need.

On the Message tab under Spelling/Set Language, there is an option in the
dialog box named "Do not check spelling or grammar". If this option is
selected then you'll encounter the message you cited. Note if you want to
remove the option for the entire email you need to select all of the text
prior to deselecting the option.

If this happens on every email then exit Outlook and either rename it or
delete NormalEmail.dotm. A new one will be created when Outlook is started
again. It should be located in your Templates folder which can be found by
copy/pasting the following in the Address bar of the Windows Explorer:

%AppData%\Microsoft\Templates

Thank you!! Removing the key fixed it

I have read everything all have written about their spell checker not working
in OE. I have tried suggestions, it's still not going to work. I know that I
must download a 3rd party spell chedk. My question is, I am not very good
at doinging anything on the computer but us it as an instrument in my work.
Would someone PLEASE give me step-by-step instructions as to just how I go
about downloading this and getting it into OE. I just purchased this new
$2,000. plus, computer from Dell, expecting everything to be loaded and ready
to use. Now Dell tells me this is not their problem but Microsoft's. I'm
sorry I'm not more knowledgable with computers.....I just need help.
Thanks much,
J-net

We don't have an Override folder to delete, but we are having the sam
issue with spellcheck and word 2007. It just stops working

Hi bruble1120,

In a test document in Word 2007 use Ctrl+A to select all text then use
Review=>Proofing=>Set Language
and be sure that you have a proofing language set to one with an 'abc/checkmark' next to it and that both of the check boxes are
turned off, then use
Office Button=>Word Options=>Proofing=>When correcting spelling and...
click the [Check Document] or [Reset document] button (it changes name based on status) to see if spell check works.

If not, then in Word 2007, check in
Office Button=>Word options=>Add-ins
and see if the speller is listed as a disabled item

We don't have an Override folder to delete, but we are having the same
issue with spellcheck and word 2007. It just stops working.
