May not be your issue, but I saw this problem in a document that had a super long filename and patch specification. Try to copy the document to a root directory folder branch w/ short name - like c:\temptest\test.doc
This straightened out the behavior. you fix, if this is the issue is use shorter filespec.

when opening a new empty document or any existing document in WORD (2003)
I now always receive the error message :
"This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create
links from other documents to this document"
Other than this annoying message, there does not appear to be any other
effect.
This message only recently started appearing.
I don't know what the message means, I could find no reference in the Office
help site to this message, nor any reference to "registering a document"
anywhere in the Word help.
I have tried running regsvr32 for old32.dll - no effect on the problem.
we also tried completely uninstalling MS Office 2003 and reinstalling it -
also no help.
Another recent problem of much more significance is that I now am unable to
use
MS Access at all, whenever I attempt to open an existing database or just
open the bare program I always get the error message
"A problem occurred while MS Office Access was communicating with the OLE
server or ActiveX control"
It is impossible to regain control of Access, whenever we close the message
box, it just reopens again, and we cannot do anything at all in Access
including closing down the program. We have to kill it in Task manager.
