As you are now posting regularly to the forum, you may find it more
convenient to access the NNTP server directly. The following link explains

Not only is it infinitely faster than the web portals but the posts and your

Thanks for the rundown. I have been aware of the webnews features but also
that they are (mostly) broken, so it just keeps seeming like LM is a
solution to a problem I don't have. I don't use proofing tools in OE, anyway
(though I guess I could, since I still have Office 2003 installed, and
occasionally I realize I should!), and I just resist most change unless I
see an overwhelming reason for it (haven't installed Silverlight, either).

Also, I have a confession: when I went to Tools | Options | Send to change
my mail sending settings temporarily so I could forward an HTML message, I
realized that yesterday when I told you our settings were identical, I was
looking at the mail settings, not news. In fact, for reasons I no longer
recall, I had news set to Uuencode; I've now changed it to MIME, and we'll
see what happens (and if it's something bad, it will be your fault <g>).

I've noted your resistance. That's why I was teasing you about making the
switch. ;-)

If you are referring to using it for email, I don't either. I use
Outlook. You can add the ability to post to the newsgroups within Outlook
without the need to actually set it up for sending/receiving email. All you
need to do is add the News button, found in the Go category of the Customize
dialog box. Of course if you don't use Outlook then this isn't applicable.

I don't think I could use Google Groups for the newsgroups. There's no need
to view "pages" of posts in OE or Windows Live Mail, you can easily set your
view to "Show replies to my messages", mark threads for watching, and most
important to me, it keeps track of what you've read and not read. But I
guess which one works the best is more a matter of what you get used to.

means of reading widely across Usenet; although he could connect directly to
msnews, I believe his ISP doesn't offer a news server on which he could read
the other groups, so he prefers to read them all in the same interface.

how to subscribe only to my threads. Or is the idea that I will be d/l all
messages in all threads? I'd rather just subscribe to my own. With all the
MVPs here there is precious little that I can contribute to other threads,
and I can easily do a search when I do want to post about a particular
problem.

OK Graham, I think I've got it set up so that my messages, and those replies
to my threads, are flagged and colored blue in OE. It would be nice if I
coudl get a reply or two, to test this out and make sure.

Thanks for the tip. Reading (or should I say, trying to read) the messages
via the microsoft.com site viewer was getting real old.

Hi Paul,

With a message selected, from the Message menu, you can select Watch
Conversation and then that message and all responses thereto will be
highlighted in read. If you were to do this for messages that you post,
then it would apply to them.

OE doesn't have a "Subscribe" option but you can easily find your posts and
all replies. Go to View/Current View/Show replies to my posts. Or press
Ctrl+H.

THanks. Looks like I'm finally getting the hang of working the signature
into my messages. Yeah this is much better (faster) than going to the
website itself for these threads.
