update 2008 12.1.2

The full procedure for modifying the verification scripts to install the update if you have removed the excess language packages are below. These directions are very easy to follow.

<http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080813052404365>

On a side note, I understand very well that removing these extra languages after installation is not a supported procedure, but lets be honest about this. Is there any reason that an update package script needs to check and make sure that English users have the Dutch language packages? Product Key verification should be more than enough proof that we are running legal copies of the software.

Not only that, but avoiding this annoying problem for a group of users of an admittedly unknown size requires altering less than one line of code.

Software vendors are under no obligation to spend man hours making unsupported procedures work, but given the simplicity of solving this particular problem, one can only assume that not solving it is deliberate.

Like others, I could not get the 12.1.1 or .2 updates to install. Unlike others having problems here, the problems I had were all related to permissions. I could not install the 12.1.1 or 12.1.2 updates until I
-repaired permissions
-rebooted
-ran the 12.1.1 update
-repaired permissions
-rebooted
-ran the 12.1.2 update
-to be safe I repaired permissions and rebooted again (this is definitely a Mac Microsoft product)

A look at the Console Install logs indicated that they were indeed looking for the languages during the install, but the permissions were preventing the operation from happening. I may have overdone it on repairing permissions, but it got the job done.

I include my experience here just in case someone had a similar issue. I will also mention that I am running an MSDN copy of Office 2008 (my company is an MS partner) which was installed with NO customizations or location changes. The 12.1 update was applied without incident.

This update procedure sucks!

Firstly, charging more for their programs and then not being able to deliver proper updates!

MS - it is not the users task to make it work but YOURS!!

Having to reinstall the MS program on 3 computers is what MS users might be used to, but it is exactly the reason I switched to Apples and now also to Apple iLife programs and other programs like Nisus Writer pro.

MS keep on sleeping!

I can not get either the 12.1.1 or 12.1.2 updates to install because of
the "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.1 Update on this volume. A version
of the software required to install this update was not found on this
volume." error.

Another member of the Mac user group I am with has provided me with the answer to my problems regarding the above error message.

You need to repair permissions with Disk Utility, then make sure that the MS Office folder's permissions are set as follows: User: Read & Write; admin: Read & Write and Everyone: Read Only. Permissions should be the same for all contents of that folder.

Another option is to move all MS preference files to the desktop temporarily, then run the installer. Restore the preferences to their original location after installation.

I added one more step to the process: I ran DiskWarrior after repairing permissions with Disk Utility.

I had been encountering the error message when trying the 12.1.0 SP1 Update, the 12.1.1 & the 12.1.2 Updaters.

Thanks for the contribution, Peter! The key ingredient here is the
Permissions issue & the fact that most users haven't had it impressed upon
them that their systems require a little TLC now & then. Properly maintained
& responsibly used Macs typically don't present the type of challenges that
many users find themselves faced with :) It's surprising what one can avoid
by simply restarting their system daily rather than constantly allowing it
to sleep 24/7/365 - they don't have 90 seconds a day to restart, but they
have untold hours to troubleshoot & repair :)

David, I'm trying to summarize the problems users were experiencing this
week. When I follow the directions below you posted on the Office newsgroup,
when I get to the SLT.bundle, I'm not seeing the four files you mentioned.
Please make sure that each folder has the following four items in it (they
should all have the same date): Localizable.strings, License.rtf,
License_error.rtf, InfoPlist.strings.

"/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Microsoft Office Setup
Assistant.app/Contents/PlugIns/SLT.bundle/Contents"

Mine shows this:

If this is not correct, can you send me a screenshot of a correct install?

What exactly causes the wrong files to be listed? Modification to Office or
the OS?? Is the only solution to re-install and update? I¹m a bit
confused....

What a waste of time, it took me 3 hours to sort this out. Thank goodness for a Time Machine back up which allowed me to restore to 12.1.0, and then redo the 12.1.1 and then 12.1.2 updates.

Hey,

I just want to say, that I did not edit or alter the installs in any way. This is a problem. I now have to spend a good couple of hours reinstalling these programs on every mac i own. You're just lucky I had other update work to do.

Hi William,

We just installed Office 2008 on a brand new iMac, ran auto update and it
patched to 12.1.1, ran it again and it tried to patch to 12.1.2, and gave
this error that it can't find a version of the software that it needs to
install the update.

Any ideas?

Thanks Diane, the tip to copy it to the desktop and install from there worked.

I would **LOVE** to know why that was necessary to fix the issue. :)

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Be happy it worked. Leopard and Office
2008 have had some strange install sagas.

Simply put: Microsoft is learning.

Office 2008 is the first product they've distributed that uses Apple's
Installer technology. Putting together an installer package for a
product as complex as Office isn't easy. They've had installer issues
since version 12.0.0 because they have practically no prior experience
to draw upon to avoid mistakes like these.

Let's hope they learn from their mistakes and put quality control checks
in place to avoid them in the future.

By the way, Microsoft isn't the only large company to have big problems.
I remember when QuarkXPress 6.0, a major graphics application for Macs,
blew open permissions on the Applications folder so that it was wide
open to everyone. It was an administrator's headache.

David, I tried to get into the Plugins folder as you suggested and I do
not find a file called SLT.bundle, I do have CEIP.bundle, GetStarted.bundle,
ProductKey.bundle, UserInfo.bundle I have also been unsuccessful installing
12.1.2 despite multiple attempts, including reinstalling the entire Office
package. I am running latest Leopard OS on a 24 inch IMAC. Any further
suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks,
Mike

I am sorry you are seeing this. There are numerous reasons that you may be seeing this. If you would like we can try to deal with them here - and it might help others. Or if you want to post your email address, I can write you directly.

I am going to look at one of the most common reasons for this first. Could
you go to the Office folder inside the Microsoft Office 2008 folder, and
scroll through the items until you come to the Microsoft Office Setup
Assistant? When you find this item, please right mouse click (or use control
+ Click) and from the contextual menu choose "Show Package Contents".

In the window that appears you will see a folder called "Contents", and
in that is one called "PlugIns", and in that folder is an item called
SLT.bundle - please click on that.

When you find SLT.bundle, please right mouse click (or use control + Click)
and from the contextual menu choose "Show Package Contents".

Can you please reply back to the list with what you find in there (just
the names of the folders is fine)?

Thanks

David

If this file is missing you have a bad install. I know you said you did a
re-install, but did you run the Apple combo first, install with all
applications closed, restart to clear caches? If you did not quit all
applications this could have caused the failed install.

We are experiencing the same update problem with Office 2008 for Mac and have tried everything. The secretary to the President of the Company is unable to use office now. PLEASE HELP!! It gives us an error when updating stating You can not install on this volume. This volume does not contain the software...
We have tried re-installing from scratch, never made changes to the installation, etc. We paid a lot for this software and it doesn't even run. Word crashes every time it is opened. We need some more ideas. Thank you.

I'm afraid that if you've tried everything suggested in this thread then
you may have a far more serious problem. Even uninstalling and
re-installing should work to resolve this issue.

I suggest you re-read this thread and look for the suggestions already
provided in case you missed something. Diane has posted a few links here
to some articles that go into great detail about how to troubleshoot
this problem.

If none of these work then post back with a list of things you've tried
so folks don't suggest them again.

Hope this helps!
