Upgrading to Snow Leopard - will Office be affected?

I do have TechTool Deluxe but the other two utilities mentioned I do not own and don't really want to pay for them if I am going to only use them once.

Hi,

You only need to use one of the utilities. If you have TechTool Deluxe,
then use it.

How often you run the utilities is almost a guessing game. The way I do
it is to run a disc utility. and set the next run based on whether or
not it had fix anything.

I start with a month interval for running the utility. If I run the
utility and it finds something wrong, I cut the interval down to 2
weeks. If it still finds things wrong, I cut the interval down to 1 week
and throw another utility at the drive to get a second opinion. If a
drive needs weekly repair, I start looking at prices of new hard drives.

If I run the utility and it finds nothing wrong, I increase the interval
to 2 months. If everything is OK, tne next interval is 4 months. I check
every 6 months no matter what.

You're free to come up with your own schedule for checking your hard
drive, of course, but I highly recommend that you do it periodically.

I see. I did launch TechTool Deluxe and under the "Volume" drop down menu, the only volume there is my system HD. My Time Machine drive is not. I thought you said to run the utility on both drives?

You may need to get a newer version of TechTool in order to work with
the Time Machine drive. Visit the TechTool site for support.

Help! I just upgraded to Snow Leopard last night on my work Intel MacBook
Pro and just launched Excel 2004 today and now it's saying I'm using the
"Test Drive" version of Office. Any ideas to fix this? It's like it lost my
registration information. Will a re-install fix it? Thanks for your help!

Add Xslimmer. It's one of the applications that will removes files in Office
that will cause your next update to fail.

I believe if you remove languages etc during the OS install THEN install
Office you'll be OK. It's removing files afterward that causes the problem.

Some of these are[1]--
DiskWarrior
TechTools -- any iteration Pro, Deluxe or otherwise
DriveGenius
AppleJack
any of the cache cleaners
Carbon Copy Cloner
SuperDuper
OnyX
iPartition
etc, etc, etc

[1] I have not checked any of the developer sites for these products.
Some, but certainly not all, may already be saying that they will work
with Snow Leopard.

I had to go way back in my archives to find this one.

Launch Excel in the same way (probably double clicking a document). Then,
from the Dock, choose Show in Finder from the contextual menu of the app
that is launched. Do a Get Info on the app that is launched, and see if the
version ends in the letters TD.

If so, you have Test Drive and Office 2004 Full version on their machine and
somehow the OS¹s database thinks Test Drive should be launched rather than
the regular office. Just take the folder that test drive is in and throw it
in the trash (and empty it).

It's possible you will need to delete the file for the launch services
database. Not sure what the .plist file is named. I'm sure someone else will
know this.

Test Drive Is Not Removed After You Install Full Retail Product:

This issue occurs when you install Office by using the Microsoft Office
Installer. It does not occur if you use the drag-and-drop method of
installation. The installer cannot overwrite certain files in the Microsoft
Office 2004 folder on your hard disk if Office v. 2004 Test Drive is already
installed.

[If you ever did a "Archive & Install" on your computer, it could have
re-installed the Test Drive.]
