visual c++ abnormal prog termination

F

Franny

I frequently get an error message In Word 2002 (running Windows XP). It says Visual C++ Runtime Library - Program C:\etc. winword.exe - abnormal program termination. Word crashes and I must recover.
I have downloaded updates to word/windows.
It seems to happen when I'm saving a document or switiching from Word to another running program. Help?

Hi Franny,

A "runtime" error means that there is an error in a macro or add-in that is attempting to run. Typically these macros are created by a third-party and are not part of the Word installation. (They could also be caused by a malfunctioning macro virus as well)

Many third-party applications will create an add-in and place it in the Office\Startup folder or use a COM add-in (DLL) to integrate their software with Word.

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates or add-ins listed. If you find any then chances are they are located in your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be located in the installation path for Office.

If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you determine which one is causing the problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins, those that are added in via the Registry rather than the Startup folders. To check for COM add-ins add the "COM Add-In" command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

I am having the same problem that Franny is. I just updated ofice, and did
everything that was suggested by Ms. Melton, but to no avail. Everytime I
try to print, I get the same message. Does anyone have any other
suggestions, as I can't imagine never being able to print documents in word

Have you tried reinstalling your printer?

I am having the same problem with Word 2003, but it happens as I'm typing,
before I ever get to print. I have downloaded Service Pack 1 and no other
updates are available. I have had to type the same document three times from
scratch, because I get "Program C:\Program Files\MicroSoft
Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE abnormal program termination" during recovery.

I am having this same problem with Word 2002

I launch a doc from outlook and without doing anything, this error message
appears and bascially locks me out... I reintalled/fixed word installation
hoping that would resolve it... nothing... reviewed all the steps listed in
this thread... none apply... net net, problem still exists...

I have the same message... I did try the solutions mentionned before, but
nothing seems to work (I have the problem with many printers, so the printer
doesn't seem to be the source of the problem)...

It's also doing the same thing in Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc...

Hope it can help somebody find an answer!

I am getting similar error message from MS Visual C++ - Runtime Library when
I try to open or save a recovered file. The doc I was working on became a
recoverd file the first time I got the error message.
I have un- reinstalled software - no help. I followed suggestions given by
each contributor (thankyou) but nothing has worked.
Any suggestions?

If you have tried all of the suggestions provided then here is a KB
article that contains several methods you can try for troubleshooting
a Visual C++ Runtime error:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555220

Please let us know if this helped resolve the problem and if it did we
would be interested in knowing which method you used and the
underlying cause. :)

I'm sorry, yes I did read the reply and tried the solutions...nothing.

If I log into the computer using a student acct (one which has various
restrictions, like no control panel, not being able to change wallpaper,
those kinds of things kids love to change on you) and I try to Print from
Word (or any Office 02 App) I get the Run Time Error.
If I log into the computer using the admin account, I can print just fine.

And now that I looked it appears I can't Print from ANY app, I get the same
error. So maybe I should post this in the Server 03 newsgroup. Sorry to
have bothered you if that is the case, unless you know of something else.

Agreed, that does sound more like a Windows Permissions problem than a Word
problem.

"Runtime" errors are usually caused by different add-in programs. Basically a
third-party program is clashing with word. Ur already screwed since XP
already has numorus bugs >.< . If it affects anything else, i.e: internet
explorer, adobe programs or anything else your using its diffenetly not word
malfunctioning. If none of the suggestions of the MVP users work, i suggest
scanning your computer for ad'ware or backdoor viruses. www.valos.com is the
best virus scanner, lavasoft is the best ad'ware killer, (www.lavasoft.com)
-_-. Also Try reinstalling the software to a different directory, either make
a new folder or use a different one, default directory is always "Program
Files" , try and shy away from that as most programs are attacked in that
directory. Another way to indentify the source is to go to start > Run > type
in "regedit" Edit your word values if needed. Hope that helps ^_^
