Susan,
I am running Office XP2000. I finished reading the post and additional
references. Haven't tried the fixes as I am on vacation now. Believe the
problems to be located with some of the service patches. I can't reinstall
Office XP as suggested in one of the procedures recommended to create a
restore point because I am missing the file that one of the service packs
updated. How can I download the service pack to get the file? I created an
emergency restart disk. Will this file be located in the emergency
procedures?

Hi, Ol' Miner Pickax,

The procedure did not recommend creating a restore point; that was the
procedure to duplicate the problem. Can you re-install each patch, as the
article suggests?

If not, try this: run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

290301 - Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301&Product=offxp

Use it to remove entries from Windows Installer for Office. The Windows
Installer is very confused right now, so let's start clean.

Then re-install Office from your original CD.

Then re-install the patches.

That may help matters.

How do you extract files from an .exe file. Winzip extracts from zip
files so I can get to the MAINSP3ff.msp file.
Thanks

DL,
I upgraded office 2003 to office 2007 and started having problems. I
was getting a message that the feature I was trying to use could not be
found. It is looking for MAINSP3ff.msp. I also have Office XP. One
solution was to delete all Office products and reinstall 2007. I was
able to deltete Office 2003 but couldn't delete Office XP or 2007 - I
continued to get "looking for MAINSP3ff.msp" unable to continue with
uninstall. The next solution was to create a folder called OfficeXPSP3
and download OfficeXPSP3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe and use Winzip to
extract the MAINSP3ff.msp and direct the windows installer question to
the folder with the file. I downloaded the .exe file but can't extract
the file. When I run the .exe file it tells me the
MAINSP3ff is already there. This box pops up everytime I try to do
something. Unfortunately this was all complicated by some automatic MS
updates. I am running Windows XP. I have restored my computer to before
I installed 2007 to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!
