Why do I get square brackets around text I've copied ?

The OLE suggests that they are maintaining a link to an outside program (as
Klaus says, this is most likely OmniPage).

OK, thanx to both of you, but I think we are barking up the wrong tree
for the simple reason that OmniPage isn't actually running, it's just
installed on the machine. It only actually runs when I either start it
manually, or choose "text" as the input type from my scanner. I haven't
done either of those for a long time now.

I checked the list of running processes and none of the OmniPage program
files were shown. OmniPage doesn't run as a process either.

I'm not even sure the problem actually lies with OmniPage. I know I said
that when I disabled the OmniPage add-in, the problem went away, but
then it came back. I think I mentioned in another post that I even
removed the add-in from the StartUp folder and I still got the problem.
That doesn't sound like OmniPage is causing the problem.

Any comments ? Thanx for all the help.

Hi Alan,

It's not OmniPage itself that is the problem (likely), but a Word Add-In it
has installed.

Look in the menu Help (?), > About Microsoft Word > System Info, track down
the Word entries, and look in COM Add-Ins.
I'm pretty sure you will find some OmniPage Add-In.

Maybe you can remove it from "Control Panel > Software", or maybe it's
started from some StartUp folder.

Yup, that's how I discovered the add-in in the first place.
Maybe you can remove it from "Control Panel > Software", or maybe it's
started from some StartUp folder.

As previously explained, I have removed it by taking the file out of the
StartUp folder. I have also tried renaming the StartUp folder
completely. In both of these cases the problem still occurred when Word
was next started.

That's why I said I don't think it's this add-in that is causing the
problem. I'm not sure why the problem didn't happen that first time
after I unloaded the add-in, but it happened next time, and has kept
happening even when the add-in is physically removed from the StartUp
folder.

So, to repeat, I don't think this add-in is the problem. Any other
suggestions would be gratefully received.

And I don't see the message(s) you refer to.

But some add-ins hook into Word from the registry. You may really have to
unsinstall from "Control Panel > Software".

Hi Alan,

If you started Word without using the /a switch and you have checked
under Tools/Templates and Add-ins and the Add-ins list is empty then
there is another cause. Word 97 doesn't support COM add-ins, such as
DLLs, so you should have to investigate that scenario.

It could be a macro intercepting the Copy or Paste commands. Take a
look under Tools/Macro/Macros and see if you have any macros named
EditCopy or EditPaste. If you do then I'd say they are causing the
problem. Either delete the macro or select it, click Edit and place an
X in front of the macro name to prevent it from intercepting the
built-in command.

Gotcha, didn't realise what you meant.

Must have dropped off your server. Doesn't really matter as ...

Tried uninstalling OmniPage altogether. Still got the problem !!

I presume you mean I should *not* have to investigate that ?

Nope. I just started Word and typed some words. I then selected a word,
copied it and got the bookmark named [OLE_LINK1].

I checked the macros, and there are four ...

AutoOpen - which consists of the single line Application.Run "GoBack"

Macro1 - an old test macro I did ages ago that selects some text and
makes it bold in font size 10.

AveryWizard and AveryWizardHelp - both installed by the Avery labels
wizard that was on the Office CD.

That's all. We seem to be a bit stuck here.

One thing that puzzles me is that this problem only started happening a
few weeks ago. AFAIK, I haven't un/installed or changed much on this
machine for ages.

Thanx for the help. Any more ideas ?

Did you, by chance, change the view setting so that you could see bookmarks
within the last few weeks? It could be that this was happening earlier and
you didn't see it.

Not knowingly ;-)

I'm pretty sure I didn't as I am a pretty competent computer user and
generally know what I'm doing !!

However, since my last post, I have reinstalled OmniPage and the problem
is now not happening !! I'm not saying it's fixed, as the first try I
had at this was unloading the add-in, which seemed to cure the problem.
Trouble was it came back again shortly afterwards.

Anyway, I'll see if it happens again. Right at the moment it's not.

Aren't computers weird ? Ta ra
