Will Not Save as .Doc File

S

SASDALLAS

Hello:

I just started using MS MacOffice 2004.

I created a .dot template (on my PC / Windows version of Office.)

I opened up the template in MacWord and saved it there.

I now, fill in the info in the template, and try to save it as a Word
DOC file.

It will not let me. It should. At least it does in Windows version.

What am I missing here? I sure can't send my client the form as
a .dot file!

Please help

Why not? It is functionally the same as a .doc file. I have an anal
retentive client that doesn't believe me. I just go to finder, click on
the file and rename it using the .doc. No complaints as of yet.

FWIW: I could never get the Windows version to save as a .doc either.

Ah. The Mac one works a bit differently.
If you want to create a new document based on the template, you must
create it via the project gallery, naming your shiny new template as
the one you want to base your new document on.

As you have discovered, once a .dot always a .dot.

In one sense it is good, reinforcing the idea that the template is
special and won't be butchered no matter how you mangle the document
based on it.

In another, it is a royal pain in the posterior, because you have to
place the template where Word expects to find the mother lode of
templates, and you have to deal with that execrable gallery nonsense.

I have almost got used to it, because templates are so useful, but I
have this involuntary urge to upchuck every time I start a doc via the
gallery.

You can however, promote a truly wonderful .doc into a .dot whenever
the mood strikes you.

Further, any doc that was created based on a template remains based on
the template. I think that applies to its descendants. It should be an
easy test ;-)

What happens when you try to save the .doc formerly known as .dot? Does
not Word try to save it as a template in spite of the new .doc
extension? Here it tries to stick the .dot extension back on.

I don't think your client was all *that* harshly toilet trained. ;-)

OK, but will SASDALLAS believe ya. I wouldn't have a clue.

It is nice to hear when something works. Thank you.

I don't. I mainly use this for my billing, so I have Invoice.dot
that I save as InvoiceClient.dot and then go to finder and change to
InvoiceClient.doc. For all my other clients I just send them the
invoiceClient.dot file and no one seems to care since I get paid.
HOwever, the trick about going in through the gallery will now be
used so I don't have to mess with the added step. Cool beans.

So. hey.

It looks like the Mac Publication program in iWork "Pages" is not
recognized as an Office Doc of any kind. So, I guess that's out for
designing anything that can be sent to a client that does not have
that particular program, correct?

And, if I understand it correctly, the new version ('08) is supposed
to be more geared toward "word processing." I would assume the same
restriction would apply.

There's no way to save a .Pages (?) / what is the extenstion (??) file
as a .DOC file, it seems, ey?

I'm planning on having a play with it shortly. It *is* supposed to
export to Word, but I don't know how yet.

I expect to find that Pages 08 will be some cutesy half word processor
half page layout program that does neither job well once you scale past
the playgroup newsletter style of document. That's not a criticism
(really) But it is unlikely to fill commercial word processing needs.

I think Microsoft will make a version of Office that saves as .pages
shortly after hell freezes over. Look at them wriggling over ODF (Open
Document Format)

I don't see Pages saving as ODF either.

Hi Kurt:

Well, if *I* were your client, *I* would have your guts for garters :)

You now have a file of type .dot lying about itself and pretending to be a
..doc.

This will cause mayhem with unskilled users across my company until I track
down all of the copies and expunge them. And it will behave dramatically
differently between Windows and Mac. You may not get a lot more business
from me :)

BTW: "It is functionally the same as a .doc file" is not correct, if you
think about it. The Template file type has several functions that the .doc
version doesn't support.

Cheers

Thank God I don't you have a client then. (g)
You now have a file of type .dot lying about itself and pretending to be a
.doc.
But if it fulfills the needs in this case (it opens, prints, and I
get paid) what is the harm except maybe at the geek level because it
ain't elegant (g).

Interesting, what differences are there in real life that are likely
to be actually seen in this context? I use a Mac and many of my clients
use Windows and I haven't had any problems or concerns.
BTW: "It is functionally the same as a .doc file" is not correct, if you

But the functions are to open, print and get me paid. Thus, it is
functionally the same. It may not be a higher levels, but since the
higher levels are not related to the task at hand, what is the concern?

According to all the literature I've seen the terminology used by Apple
states that their iWork '08 products will "export to" and "import from" the
corresponding MS Office formats... it will be interesting to see why they
don't market it as *compatible with*.

I agree... Not to sound snobbish, but I'm not sure what one might
realistically expect in the way of commercial/professional output from a
*suite* of software which carries a full retail price of US$79.00 - Apple
has *never* been known to *underprice* their products:)

SAS,

In Pages, look under File | Export, and you can export Pages files as
..docs. That's '06, I'd assume '08 is the same.

As far as designing and sending things to clients--I'm not sure how
exact the export process is and whether it will look like what you want
to. Pages will open Word docs and save them as Pages files, but
again--not totally sure you get exactly what you had before.

Hiya Daiya! It is good to see you back here.

I have just been giving Pages from iWork 8 a test kicking.
It exports as you say it might below.

Round tripping through Word and back is surprisingly good. I was most
impressed to see it imported my styles from Word.
It is a bit more pointy-clicky than I'd like, but I guess I'd get the
shortcuts flying with a bit more practice.

A quick lap through the manual shows it has most of the features of
Word. The only mismatch I have seen so far is lack of support for EQ
fields. I bet the field support is overall pretty spotty. I have not
tried track changes round-tripped through Word, but the basic
functionality is similar.

Its typography is much better than Word's. Configurable ligatures, old
style numbers, better vertical alignment, alternative character forms..
it is all there. I thought I was in InDesign for a minute.

Sections and layouts is much better done, and of course the UI is as
slick as you would expect a Cocoa application to be.

Selecting graphics objects on the document is not as nice as say,
Illustrator but in most cases it is good enough. Whether text wraps an
illustration depends on which is arranged in front. That is neat.

Mostly it is far quicker than Word on the same (smallish) documents. It
lacks that annoying wait at startup while Word contemplates its navel
full of fonts. Starting pages by dragging a Word doc onto its dock icon
took 2 seconds. Word took 22 seconds. (OK OK, I'm fooling about with
hundreds of font families) Word is far more sluggish in Page view.
Pages, of course, has nothing but.

I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm not exactly back quite yet---but back enough to be coveting Pages
'08. :)

I think Tidbits says Pages '08 now has a word processing mode vs. layout
mode? Still a page view?

Thanks.

I'm really just interested in it as a replacement for my PC version of
MS Publisher, which I personally really liked. I guess it has taken a
beating from some for one reason or another, but I like(d) the
program. I mostly use it for quickie promo pieces combining photos
and type for my photography business. I print these 8.5x11 on an
Epson 2400 Stylus Photo printer and they always are easy to do, but
look very nice (to clients, anyway) as well.

Pages seems like it, and maybe better. I just have not had time to
mess with it much. I'm downloading the 08 trial right now.

Just wish I could buy "Pages" only, and not the other two apps......

But then you'd miss out on Keynote, which is probably the most beautiful
application there is on the Macintosh platform. And Numbers looks very
promising and useful, too. I've been playing around with the trial version,
and I have to say, I'm really impressed so far.

Hi Daiya,

welcome (almost) back! The fact that there are two modes is in reality not
as spectacular as it sounds on paper. The word processing mode is what
you're used to from using previous versions of Pages; the page layout mode
is very similar, except that it uses a free-form graphic canvas. In other
words, there is no text layer in the background, and you can drag images
around more easily than before. If you want to add text in that mode, you
will need to use text boxes.

By the way, you cannot switch between both modes in a document that is
already open; when you launch Pages and the Template Chooser shows up, you
have to pick a template in the mode that you want to be working in (for
example a blank document in word processing mode, or a newsletter in page
layout mode).
