Word 2000 won't start

It's not just third party add-ins which are suspect...

I recently had a similar problem - Word 2000 which had been working fine
now would not start.

After trying all the standard things, I uninstalled Microsoft Office Live
Add-in which had arrived through Windows Update on 23rd January. Problem
solved! If you have this add-in (listed as an installed program) try
removing
it.

Can you tell me a little more about the add-in and the update? I can report
this issue but I need some details. :)

First, what happened to Word exactly? Did it crash? Did you encounter an
error message? If so, what was it? Did it hang?

Second, are you saying the Microsoft Office Live Add-in was automatically
installed without your knowledge in an update or are you saying it was
available in the list of updates and you selected it? Do you have an Office
Live Workspace? If you have a Hotmail/Windows Live Mail then you should have
one but my main question is did you activate/use it before the update?

Also, any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Thanks!

I am running both Office 2000 and Office 2007 on Microsoft Vista Business.

I have Windows Update set to download updates and let me choose when to
install them. Office Live update was offered as a recommended update, and I
chose to install it. I do not have an Office Live Workspace or
Hotmail/Windows Live Mail. After the update I looked at the Office Live
webpages, but have not attempted to use the facilities.

I use Word 2000 only occasionally (as a base system for VBA development) and
the next time I attempted to open it, I got a partially populated white
screen, a continuous rotating cursor and 'not responding' in the window
heading. Sometimes toolbars would appear, more often not, and even when they
did appear they did not respond. Eventually Vista gave me a message that Word
was not responding and gave me an opportunity to close it. This was repeated
every time I tried to start Word 2000.

In attempting to diagnose the problem, I located the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\OLConnectorAddin.Connect
and to see if this was the cause, temporarily disabled it by renaming it. The
problem went away. I then restored the key, and the problem returned. I then
established that this key was installed by the Office Live addin, which I
uninstalled. Word 2000 then was again OK.

If you need any more information, please let me know.

Ah! I suspect it was offered because you also have Office 2007 installed.
That's good to know. :)

I appreciate you following up with a detailed account of what you
encountered. This will be very helpful when I file a report on this issue
and hopefully it will be corrected in the future. Although since Microsoft
doesn't support side-by-side installations I'm not sure what they'll do
about it but you never know...

Interesting that Terry should say that the Office Live Add-in doesn't affect
Word 2007. I have to disagree.

I'm running Office 2007 Professional on Windows SP3. Word has been hanging
at a blank white screen for over 24 hours. Turns out Excel was doing it too,
though all the other apps in the suite were fine.

I've just spent 5 hours trying to get Word and Excel going again, following
all the tips in these posts and others. I repaired Office, renamed the normal
template, ran an AV and spyware scan... Nothing worked. I'm a law student, so
I was getting a little freaked out!

When Andy mentioned the Add-in, I realised that I installed it a couple of
days ago with the upgrade to MSN Live Messenger. I use MSN a lot and the
Add-in sounded like it might be useful.

I've just uninstalled it and Word and Excel are working again.

Thanks for all your advice,

Claire
