Word 2003 Maximize problem...

D

Dan Bass

When you maximize Word 2003 there is a substantial gap (inch) at the top of
the screen and the status bar drops down below the task bar.

I've got a newly build Windows XP Pro (SP2, but happens on SP1 too) running
Outlook 2003 with Word as my editor.

- All systems and software is up-to-date.
- I've seen the problem mentioned in this newsgroup before but is no
solution.
- It is nothing to do with the graphics drivers, they are correct.
- It only happens when Outlook is running at the same time with Word as the
editor. (i.e. close outlook and a new instance of word maximises correctly)
- other guys in my office can easily reproduce this.
- it's really getting on my nerves! ;o)

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys.

Dan.

If you open Word in a Restore Windows, can you use the drag handles to pull
it out to full size so that it is centred?

Do you mean when the window state is normal?
Yes, you can resize it to full screen, or any other size you want. It only
seems to be in the maximise window state that the problem occurs.

Try deleting the Word data key which will be recreated when Word is
restarted. See the following FAQ for information on the Data Key

"winword /a" from the run menu brings up Word as you'd expect (ie, no gap on
maximise)

Close this instance of Word and open up word without that "/a" switch and
it's back to the gap on maximise scenario.

It's something to do with Outlook 2003 running as well with Word as the
default editor.

Bug with Word 2003 / Outlook 2003 I reckon

Dan.

If it is OK starting Word with the /a switch, then it points to a third
party add-in that is causing the problem. When you start Word with the /a
switch, it bypasses all customisations, templates, Add-ins, COM add-ins and
anything else in the Startup or registry for Word or Office. This definitely
is not a Word problem. I suggest you check out to see what is loading into
Word on start up and remove it.

In fact, this may just be a corrupt normal.dot. Find your normal.dot and
rename it normal.bad and then restart Word.

That's understandable... But in my scenario I have no word plug-ins, macros,
3rd party apps etc.

I'm still convinced it's related to Outlook using word as the default
editor. Why? Well simply because the problem occurs while Outlook is
running, and not when Outlook isn't...

To produce the problem, all i did was rebuild my PC.
- Windows XP, then SP2 (although it happens without SP2)
- Office 2003

I tried the "normal.dot" renaming idea but it didn't solve anything.

It looks like other people have come across this:

Have you tried renaming normal.dot as normal.bad? It is a 10 second test and
you can revert back just as quickly.

Another possibility - though less likely - is that email.dot is corrupt, but
that only normally opens when you are editing an email in Outlook. But if it
isn't normal.dot, try renaming it email.bad and see if that resolves the
problem.

Hello,
I too have the same problem.
i have found that you can minimize Outlook and then Maximze WORD and it does
work. Until you Max Outlook again and it comes back.
Then it returns at random intervals.
I also found that this cures the issue for now.

Close word, Go to outlook and click New mail, this then opens word full
screen, as normal.

I wouldn't mind getting to the bottom of this, any ideas ?

The problem is happening when Outlook 2003 creates an instance of
WinWord.exe, and then all following usages of Word get opened under that same
WinWord.exe process that Outlook 2003 created. This is definitely a problem
between Outlook 2003 and Word 2003. One solution that I am using is the /W
switch on my Word shortcuts. That switch starts a brand new instance of Word
and fixes the problem. The problem still comes about though when you open a
..doc file or something because you can't easily apply the /w switch to those
as well.

It would be nice if an Office MVP can validate this and maybe provide a
better solution. This is reproducible at my home and work with no customized
setup at all.

TF

Try the following. Open Outlook and deselect Word as the email editor. Close
Outlook.

Open Word and set to the correct view. Close Word. Then open and close it a
few times to test that it is sticking in the correct view (reboot too).

Now open Outlook and reselect Word as the email editor: Close Outlook. Test
Word again.

If I don't use Word as my E-mail editor in Outlook, it never happens. As soon
as I re-enable the Word editor and actually send out/read a few e-mails, the
problem shows up when you open up Word on its own. Using Process Explorer, I
can see how the Word instance that Outlook opens up is being used by the Word
instance I’m starting on my own and somehow they're conflicting. When I use
the /w switch to start Word with its own instance, it never happens.

Here is a WMV video of it happening. It's pretty random sometimes as you'll
see by the video.

Have you set the Word Start icon to open in a maximised window? Right-click
on the Word icon, select Properties and then under the Shortcut Tab, set the
Run windows to Maximise. Does that resolve the problem?

No, I change the shortcut to open up as maximzed and it does, except there is
still the buffer at the top of the window.

Bizarre! I know this is going to sound weird, but would you check that you
have the latest printer and graphics drivers installed please?

Also, start Word in Safe mode by using Start, Run and typing in

winword /a

and press enter. This starts Word in Safe Mode and resets some flags in Word
which MAY resolve the problem.

I am running the latest video drivers for my ATI card and I'm also using the
built-in HP laserJet 5L drivers that comes with Windows since HP doesn't have
their own. Starting with /a fixes the problem, but it only does so because it
starts a new instance of winword.exe which isolates it from the winword.exe
that is opened up with Outlook. If you use the default shortcut, it won't
create a new instance of winword.exe, it will just reuse the Outlook one
which is causing the problem.

I'm far from convinced that it is Outlook causing the problem. I understand
why you think it is Outlook, but disagree because since Office 2003, Outlook
no longer uses its own mail.dot but uses the Word normal.dot. I think the
problem isn't a Word or Outlook problem because Word is opening into what is
allocated as maximised. Something is telling Word that the top of the screen
doesn't exist and I strongly believe that it is the graphics driver that is
at fault. What it looks like is that say if you are running at 1600 x 1200,
Word is only being allocated 1450 x 1200: this is why I think it is the
graphics driver and not Word or Outlook at fault. It is happening when
Outlook is opened because there is much more loading on the system when
Outlook is opened than when Word is opened on its own.

Try reverting back to the last-but-one ATi certified drivers (currently
Catalyst 5.6, so try Catalyst 5.4 download from here
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Also, there is a driver at HP for the LJ5L: it is file lj631en.exe
v.01.12.02.

I've actually had this problem for a long time now, over a year. And as a
result I know that I've gone through a whole bunch of ATI drivers in the
process. I'm a gamer so I make sure that I'm on top fo the latest drivers so
at one point I was using the 5.4 and was still having the problem. I
installed the printer drivers but it had no affect.

Do you have Office 2003? Have you been able to verify the problem? I've had
it happen on my work and home machine which are running on different
resolutions. Also, the gap isn't always the same either.

I've seen the problem reported once before in this NG about 2 or 3 months
ago and IIRC, it was on a top-of-the-range widescreen Dell notebook running
at an 'overdriven' resolution.

I have an ATi card in my computer at work (have Radeon at home) and I have
never experienced the problem myself. In fact, we have around 40 PCs at
work, around half are running dual monitors using Radeon 9550 and most of
the others are using a mixture of integrated Intel Extreme or GMA900
graphics with just a couple running AGP MX440s. We are all running Office
2003 and have Word set as the email editor in Outlook. Most of us are what
would be described as power users of Outlook and Word.

What resolution and refresh rate are you running and do you have an AGP or
PCI-E card?

Terry

: I've actually had this problem for a long time now, over a year. And as a

:
: Do you have Office 2003? Have you been able to verify the problem? I've
had
: it happen on my work and home machine which are running on different
: resolutions. Also, the gap isn't always the same either.
