Thanks for all the detailed instructions; I have also seen Word and
Powerpoint slow down tremendously since installing Tiger.
I went to FontBook & clicked "Resolve Duplicates". In my experience,
it didn't _remove_ them, it just identified them. They're the ones
with the dots to the left in the Font column. Then, after reading the
notes suggesting I keep the most recent fonts, I looked at each pair of
duplicates. I found the first duplicate and right-clicked (or
control+click if you have a Mac mouse) and selected "Show Font File".
I discovered that I had fonts in three places (OS9, System library, and
User library), and I kept only the most recent one, generally in the
System library.
I also upgraded to Office 11.1.1 and I ran Coctail to repair
permissions, etc.; finally, I restarted the computer. An hour into the
no-duplicate font setup, things seem faster than before. They are
still slower than Panther, but it's tolerable.
Hope that helps the next person; this definitely seems to be a bug with
Tiger, as I've seen the problem detailed all over the Web.

ps, thanks to the Office MVPs on this & other boards; I've found your
collective advice VERY helpful!
