Hi Walt!

I don't know where John gets the idea that he's one of the few PhD-less on
this newsgroup! (I *knew* I should have gotten around to writing my
dissertation before it was too late :)!)

Beth

look folks I know you are enjoying poking Fun at Ph.D's.

I meant no disrespect to the Title. I was just asking whether he though any more
influence because of the title? Nothing else was intended.

It seems to have become a life of its own.

I doubt seriously whether there are many Ph.D;s on the list. But I welcome their
opinion just as much as the common man/woman's as well. I'm willing to learn from
anyone regardless of education.

I know some Ph.D's from my work with Henry County School System; as a Computer Tech
and AV technician.

Almost all I ran into had common sense and semmed to put their pants on one leg at a
time just like any one else. There was one that let her title get the better of her
at first. But the rest were normal human beings.

We're not *poking* fun at Ph.Ds! We're just *having* fun. Really!
(Norman, you haven't taken offense at any of this, have you??)

I am/was just a dissertation short of getting my Ph.D some <mumblety> years
ago and never got around to writing it. Wish I had. Then you'd all have to
call me Dr. Rosengard :)!

Is it possible that they give your comments more weight simply because you
own that
"Ph.D Title" as opposed to the regular "Joe Nobody" such as I and many
others on
this list.

Why would it ??? I'm surrounded by people with MDs and PhDs and it sure does
not make them more knowledgeable computerwise ;-))

I don't even know what area Norman has a PhD in... (even though Google can
give you a pretty good idea ;-))) ).

Anyway, don't worry, as far as I am concerned, I simply do not draw any
conclusion from titles :)

Just sent you a Private email with a PDF of Addresses needed.

John said:
Hi Phillip:

You want the address list to be part of the document? With how many names?

Entourage inserts your entire address book in your Normal template as a set
of AutoTexts.

If you want, you can make a copy of the Normal template: it will have your
whole address book in it.

But for sensible use, there would be a better way.

Can you give more detail on your requirement, and I will have a look at this
for you.

Cheers

I know :)) I found it shortly after in the list in Google :))) I kind of

Hui Phillip:

As Beth says, we're not "poking fun" (although we do that too...) we're
"having fun".

By my count, there are at least five actual PhDs in this group, and I think
two tenured full professors. This place must be one of the most
academically over-windowed places on the planet. However, we do not allow
that to raise expectations that the discourse in here will be any more well-
mannered as a result :)

Seriously: *I* do not have a university degree of any kind, and I am one of
only very few in here that don't. Like Walt, I have spent a lifetime
looking longingly at the space on my wall where no degree appears.

So forgive my envy :)

Just to back up what Beth said: I too have personal experience of
suggestions coming back from the MSWISH process. Each and every sane,
detailed, reasoned suggestion is considered.

Sometimes, the MVPs (who are simply users just like you whose email
addresses Microsoft has...) are asked for their opinion on one or more of
the suggestions. So we KNOW they are being read :)

You are quite correct that it can take years to get one implemented.
Microsoft Office works in a N + 3 product cycle. There is always one on the
shop shelf, one in coding, one in design.

Currently, Word 2004 is on the shelf, Word 20006 is in coding, Word 2008 is
in design. It's the one in Design that gets most of the new feature
suggestions. Sorry: but that's the way complex software is made.

As to whose stupid bloody idea the bubbles were, I seriously do not know.
But if I get hold of him... Actually, it's not quite as bad as I make it
sound. The problem was that people were not using tracked changes because
it all seemed a bit too "technical and complicated". So they made the
display more intuitive for the new user who will probably have few changes
in a document. The new display does not suit me, but then I am a Technical
Writer who can have literally thousands of detail-level changes in a
document. But I know how to use Tracked Changes and I can confidently use
the previous display method, which was designed for the likes of myself.

What I CAN use and deeply appreciate is the new underlying Document Compare
engine that arrives with the new display. Give that a run before you
completely dismiss their efforts. So far in my testing I have found it
practically unbeatable. At last, it can handle a document with a TOC in
place. At last, it can show exactly where the change in a table occurred.
And at last, it can indicate formatting changes. Worthwhile improvements to
the underlying engine, for the professionals. And those irritating balloons
for the newbies. For me, fair exchange :)

Cheers

I dunno, Beth. I think sending Microsoft a suggestion for a Mac product
these days would be about as effective as putting it in an envelope and
tossing it out into the street -- or putting it in a bottle and tossing it
into the China Sea.

Even if they read it, I suspect they just don't care. And even if they did,
it'd take years for the suggestion to be implemented. Sad.
