Word 2004 font problem

If you use Panther Cache Cleaner you don't need to use any Unix
commands. If you don't know any Unix commands you should not use the
single-user mode as a way of removing the files; it is too easy to make
a tiny mistake in punctuation and do serious damange. m.

Right, we'll just tuck the Panther Cache Cleaner tip somewhere. That's for
when you have a problem that really looks like corrupt fonts but manually
trashing the Office Font Cache in the MS Prefs folder doesn't work, right?

Question--the poster didn't say whether they had restarted after trashing
the cache, do you think it would make a difference?

There's a pref file that dictates font
substitutions. I think what I did was toss that.

Hey Matt, just to clarify the file that dictates Font Substitutions, is the
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Font Substitutes

Even though this is in the Preferences folder, Word 2004 never writes to it
and reads it only has a Hard Coded list of fonts, to quickly scan through
when it has to Substitute one font for another.

Thanks

Yes, and in fact IIRC, PCC will make you restart after running it, for
just this reason.

One more thing: after making font changes of any kind, always restart
(or at least log out and log in). This forces the computer to see the
changes. m.

OK, thanks! When the problem arose I probably just tried everything that
seemed connected with fonts in any way... :) m.

Right. The MVP site and JE both have info, but a dedicated "damaged fonts"
FAQ would probably be a good idea, considering how many issues we seem to be
seeing, though it would take a little bit. Thanks.
