Hi Suzanne,

Usually, they'll display in Explorer the way they're typed in :) Following links defaults to backslashes.

===============
Oops! Missed one! FWIW, they're displayed in the Explorer address bar with
backslashes.

I don't type them in, though, just browse and select files, and they're
displayed with backslashes.

Thanks. Found it and deleted. Word still not fully functional.

Running in safe mode (/a) results in a fully functional Word.

But no difference if Word started normally.
Deleting Normal.dotm makes no difference.

What now ?

L

Laurence

Thanks. Found it and deleted it. No improvement.

Summary:
Running in safe mode (/a) Word is fully functional.
Running Word normally after deleting Normal.dotm does not improve anything.

Now what ?

Terry,

As stated in my original post, "New Dell machine running Vista Ultimate 64bit.
Office Enterprise 2007. All updates done."

Word 2007 problem started when machine had only Office Enterprise 2007 and
Adobe CS3 Master Collection installed. Everything is clean.

I changed the default printer from my network printer to default pdf.
Problem not solved. Surely the default pdf should be ok?
Or do I have to physically delete any and all printer drivers that are
installed?

"incompatible legacy add-in" Please be specific.
Is this an add-in for Word 2007, or Office 2007, or IE ?
How do I list all add-in's to determine which ones can be deleted ?

Thanks,
Laurence

Following up on my previous post. Your answer to another user with the same
problem was, "The most likely causes of Word 2007 problems are printer
driver, normal.dotx and third party add-ins."

I have deleted normal.dotx.
I have changed the default printer to pdf.

"third party add-ins" to Word 2007 ?, Office 2007 ?, IE ?
Please be specific.

Thanks,
Laurence

Third party add-ins for Word: these are most often found in the Word Startup
folder, but may be COM add-ins. You need to install a local printer driver.
It doesn't matter if you don't have the printer connected but Word MUST see
a local printer driver set as Windows default.

When running in Safe Mode (using the /a switch) Word is working in its
default install mode bypassing everything: printer driver, macros,
templates, add-ins, customisation - all outside influences. So if it works
OK in safe mode, Word itself is not the problem.

Several items:

1. Local printer driver is set as default. No improvement.

2. Unable to find Word Startup directory.

3. Running in safe mode I can print to network printer from within Word
2007. But this doesn't make sense based on your comment, "When running in
Safe Mode (using the /a switch) Word is working in its default install mode
bypassing everything: printer driver, macros, templates, add-ins,
customisation - all outside influences."
Please comment. Thanks.

Terry,

Found: Users, AppData, Roaming, Microsoft, Word, STARTUP
But nothing in this folder. Like I said this new machine is clean.

I also downloaded and installed Guided Help but it doesn't run. Are you sure
this application can run on Ultimate 64-bit ?

Be sure and click on the folders to open them.
Select run from the start menu - type regedit -enter - select hot key
current user select software - select microsoft -select office-select 12
-select word - select and delete the data file. This works for the problems
with the mouse in word 2007 and hopefully in word 2003.

Alomax - Yeah!!!!! this fixed both my copy w/mouse issue, and when I close
WORD it is no longer shutting down and restarting trying to fix some unknown
problem. I had already updated my computer with all the current fixes for
Office 2007, but they didn't fix this problem. Maybe someone can add your
fix to the updates for anyone else having these problems. thanks!!

Hi Julie,

If you are a french women : Le problème de crach à la fermeture est connu.

If you are a English women : Try to unselect the HP photosmart printer as
the default one. Selecte an other printer as the default printer. Then, when
you have to print, select the right printer. It's the driver of the HP
multifonction printer that are not works with Word 2007.

Hopes that help you!
J'espère que cela va t'aider!

Will someone from Microsoft with some knowledge of Word 2007 (besides Terry)
please weigh in on this discussion thread and help out users who are having
this same problem? You're embarrassing yourselves.

Instead of giving cryptic, defensive and useless answers, like "It's not
Word" or "It must be a legacy add-in", give the user community some specific
steps for getting Word 2007 back to factory settings so that users don't have
to completely uninstall the entire Office 2007 package to fix it.

I see that Laurence finally gave up because he had to pull his hair out for
a dozen posts to try to get some solutions.

The bottom line is, if Word doesn't work, there is no other place to go
except Microsoft. Step up to the plate here and get an engineer to provide
some real answers and stop trying to exasperate the user community!

The answers in this forum are provided by volunteers. No one here works for
Microsoft or is paid to answer questions. The fact is, if none of us have
experienced these problems, we can only provide the solutions we know work
to solve most problems (even those we haven't personally experienced). If
you want an answer from a Microsoft engineer, you must be prepared to pay
the fee for support.

I'm encountering a similar issue. Whenever I launch Word 2007 (12) normally,
mouse clicks within the document don't register. The mouse functions
correctly in all other applications. Word's menus still accept mouse clicks
-- just not the document. Launching the application with the /a switch
enables correct functionality.

This is on WinXP.

REPRO:
- Launch Word 2007
- type some text w/in the document
- attempt to mouse click w/in the document
(ex change the insertion point, select text, scroll)

RESULT: No obvious change to the document
EXPECT: Mouse click to register

Lots of useful information in this KB article. Unfortunately, none of the
suggestions fixed my problem.

Read a few similar threads and you will find that this is because of a
corrupt Word DataKey. You need to run Regedit and delete the key.
