Word 2007 Freezing on Opening

If you scroll down the list of 'Printer Manufacturers', one is called
GENERIC and under that the top printer should be Generic/Text only.

So far I did find it. But Windows asked whether I want it as a default
printer (no) and asked me to do a test page, which then produced the word
ERROR. That's step one.......

You seem to be making this unnecessary difficult by not reading simple
instructions.

I said clearly in a previous post to make this the DEFAULT printer. Of
course, you cannot make a test print because the physical printer doesn't
exist. As I said, that doesn't matter because Word just needs to see a
compatible printer driver to work correctly.

Please set it as the default Windows printer. Then open Word and see if it
is still slow to open.

You won't see me for around 2 days now because I am off up North to collect
my son and his possessions from University.

I made it default, but unfortunately it had no affect on Word 2007. The same
as before. I leave it alone for 2 or 3 minutes and it unfreezes by itself. I
have other problems on my computer like net.exe when I turn off the computer,
difficulty downloading Windows updates that freeze or stop at 99% leading HP
to tell me just to do System Recovery. ............

Let's go back to Task Manager. Would you please run Task Manager and then
start Word keeping Task Manager ON TOP so that you can see what is happening
to the CPU (process percentage): I'm not interested in the memory, only the
CPU column. How much is Word using and is there another process hogging
loads of CPU during this period. Does it drop back at the same time that
Word becomes usable?

Will do. I'll do it now.

Just did it. Well, CPU Usage didn't show anything special. Going from 4% to
54% and back again. In the Processes there was a backup program I use, but I
have had it for a long time. It takes alot at the begininng and I closed it.
But it didn't help Word.

I am experiencing the same issues as Dovie, and found that the winword /a
allows word to open without issue. On further investigation I realize that
the global templates are loaded from a network share, and that the network
performance is poor at best. It seems that delays in loading the templates
is the issue in this cause.

Ian, how then do you solve this problem? This has been a problem for me for
only a couple of months........

I have been having the same problem, except it will not freeze when I open
in safe mode. Matter of fact I can open documents from word as well at that
time. What can be done so that I do not have to do this all of the time?

I have the same problem. Yesterday, I set "Send to OneNote 2007" as the
defualt printer. Worked like a charm... until today. I shut down at home and
restarted the computer at school. Same problems. I need to solve it for now.
But my next purchase will be a Mac :)
