I was having the same issue (application wouldnt load at all - not even in safe mode. I did all typical troubleshhoting or removing/ re-installing, clearing out tmp files etc..) excel and other office apps worked without an issue.
In the end this seemeed for me to be a profile or rights issue.
When I tried to open word using a run as cmd under an admin account, this worked fine.
after opening once sucessfully using runas cmd, I could open each time under normal account - although it did alert me that chnages had been made to the template when it first loaded.

ok so i was opening a regular word document and my word 2007 keeps crashing,
i tried running in safe mode and it crashed, tried repairing and repair was
successful but word keeps crashing, i get the word 2007 splash screen then
the crash error with the following details

I am running windows vista ultimate on a 32bit platform, it was working fine
and all of a sudden it does not work
i tried deleting the data key from the following location
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Dat
and that didnt work either, same issue... can anyone please help
my other office products such as onenote and excel work perfectly. This
happens weather i'm just opening word as an application or opening a actual
document.
