Word crashes when I paste from other documents

O

oldcamel

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Every time I try to paste anything into Word, it crashes - gives me the spinning ball and I have to force it to quit.
It happens on other simple operations too (writing for instance), but paste makes a crash every time.
I did some google, and tried to repair permissions, delete a lot of preference-files, examined my fonts for problems - even deleted normal.dotm. Nothing works!

One thing you don't specify & don't mention having done: Make sure both
Office (12.2.3) and OS X (10.6.2) are fully updated. Otherwise, nothing else
you do is likely to rectify the situation. Even if you do already have the
latest OS X update it might not be a bad idea to re-apply it using the Combo
Updater. The Combos are far more comprehensive than the versions delivered
by Software Update... Copy/Paste is actually a facility hosted by the OS.
You can get the Combo here:

ecombo.html>

Additionally, I'm not sure what "examining" fonts means, but Resolving
Duplicates & Validating Fonts are something which should be done. Also, the
font caches need to be cleared, but that is normally handled when the Mac is
shut down & restarted (which is something else you don't mention having
done). If you leave your Mac and/or Word running 24/7 that 'housekeeping'
isn't getting done & can quite easily account for the problems you describe.

If you still have the problem after following these suggestions reply with
any additional detail you can supply in order to pursue it further. Just as
a 'precautionary' request, please avoid the use of broad terminology such as
"Every time I try to paste anything" unless you literally mean it... Have
you actually tried copying *everything* you possibly could from *every*
conceivable source using *every* possible program? :) No offense, but
specifics rather than generalizations are what best enable solutions.

That sounds like a corrupt document.

Once you have done what Bob suggested, try a Maggie:

The Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

Cheers

Thanks for your answers, unfortunately they didn't solve my problems.
It happens in every new document, so &quot;doing a Maggie&quot; won't help. I really thought, that I couldn't paste from any program, but I have investigated a little further, and it seems that it is Safari that is causing problems. I can't paste from Safari into Word - but paste into Textedit works fine!
I can paste from Firefox! and from Excel.
It seems as the crash happens as soon as the clipboard contains something from Safari - I tried doing &quot;paste special&quot;, but Word crashed as soon as I touched the edit-menu.
I hope this can bring us further.

This condition has four common causes:

* Missing updates,

* Corrupt document,

* Corrupt Normal,

* Bad webpage

First check that both the system and Office have the latest updates: this
issue will happen if updates are missing.

If it's happening in every new document, it's likely that your Normal
template is corrupted, which will pass a corruption to every new document
you create.

Quit Word and delete your Normal.dotm. Word will create a new one when it
restarts. If that fixes the issue in new documents, then you need to Maggie
the old ones.

Sorry: You've given us almost no detail to work with so we can't offer

Hi
Thank you for your very fast answer. I will try your ideas - allthough I allways keep the software updated, and already has tried deleting normal.dotm.

I must admit, that I find your comment &quot;you've given us almost no detail to work with&quot; a bit arrogant. How am I as end-user supposed to know, which information you need? I describe the problem as accurate as I can.

By the way: I'm not the first guy with this problem - seems like you've seen it before and just given up because of &quot;lack of information&quot;:

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/35446711/word-2008-freezes-when-co.aspx

My mac is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and Office 12.2.3, latest update. It's in Denmark, hence all software is Danish versions.

The problem is not limited to any specific web-site, but if you want an adress, you can take anything from Danish national broadcast: www.dr.dk

No, you're not the first to have a similar problem, but I'm not sure how you
draw this conclusion... It appears to me that the 2 posters in that
conversation are the ones who have not responded to the latest replies from
John & myself. How that translates to 'us' having "given up" in any way I
honestly can't comprehend.

Frankly, when those who make the inquiries stop responding it's typically an
indication that a solution has been found -- they just haven't taken the
time to share their success story. Whether that success came as a result of
our efforts or from some other source we have no way of knowing. Often there
is no patent solution to certain situations because there could be any
number of causes resulting in comparable symptoms. If correspondents don't
choose to share their experience we can't be sure what might work or what
might not. The newsgroups are about *sharing*, not "grab & go".

Hi
Heres the latest
I have uninstalled MS Office.
Did manual cleaning: removed the folder &quot;Microsoft user data&quot; in my documents-folder. Removed everything from library/application suppor/microsoft office. Removed all preferences called com.microsoft..
I did this in my home folder and in the library for all users.
Emptied trash.

Then I removed duplicate fonts from Mac OS.
And finally I repaired permissions on the disk.

Installed Office 2008 from scratch and applied servicepacks up till 12.2.3

Again, there was duplicate fonts, which I have deactivated, and again I repaired permissions.

Opened word. Typed something. Opened Safari, copied a few words from a website. Tried typing i Word. Word stopped responding again.

As far as I can figure out, Word crashes as soon as the clipboard contains data from Safari.

If someone can tell med what to do, I promise I will return here and tell that it worked.

What is your current version & update of Safari? Can you be more descriptive
about the kind of content you're copying? Maybe provide links to some of the
sites you're copying from?

FWIW, I'm using Office 12.2.3, OS X 10.6.2 & Safari 4.0.4 here & have not
encountered any kind of problem.

I have Safari Version 4.0.4 (6531.21.10)
I am quite sure it doesn't depend on some particular site - I have tried on a lot of site supplied by random google-search.
But I have just made a crash by copying from
http://mediamac.comon.dk/index.php/news/show/id=22108?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=rss

and again from random text from www.dr.dk

It seems to me, that Word can't interpret the clipboard data - can it be something about the fonts? I have 2 folders containing some of the same fonts: \library\fonts and \library\fonts\microsoft
F.x. Arial.ttf is in \library\fonts, and the &quot;font suitcase&quot; is in the Microsoft folder
I have already deactivated duplicates, though.

Word will crash in OS 10.6.2 if there are duplicate fonts.

De-activating them does not seem to help: you need to move them off the boot
drive and then reboot the system to get Word to lose interest in them.

That could be worth doing. Search for Corentin's advice in here on
resolving font duplicates.

There wasn't any real duplicates, but some obsolete font suitcases which I have deleted. I also deleted the folder with &quot;deactivated fonts&quot; - the duplicates I had deactivated earlier.
I also let Onyx delete the font cache and repaired permissions.
Still the problem persists. Word - and Excel by the way - hangs with the spinning umbrella as soon as I touch mouse or keyboard, if data from Safari is in the clipboard.

Can I be sure to solve the problem if I do a clean install of Snow Leopard? It's an awful hard job to do and I really don't know if it's worth it - maybe I should stick to Openoffice instead.

It doesn't seem like reinstalling SL should be necessary. Did you apply the
10.6.2 Combo Update as I suggested in my first reply? I don't see any
indication one way or the other. I'd also try reinstalling & updating Safari
before resorting to an Archive & Install of the OS.

Another possibility;

I believe OS X has a clipboard preferences file which you can delete,
although I'm not sure where it is in SL. If so, a new one will be created
automatically. There is also a Safari preferences file you might remove to
see if that makes any difference.

Just out of curiosity, have a look in Word> Preferences - Edit, click the
Settings button in the Cut & paste options. Reply back with what those
settings are.

I did apply the 10.6.2 combo update yes - without result.
The edit-settings are (as far as I can translate them into english) set for
Adjust distance between sentences and words
Adjust tableformatting on paste
Smart style-adjustment
Join formatting on paste from Powerpoint
Join pasted lists with surrounding lists.

I will try all your other suggestions and return. Thank you very much.

I have not been able to find any clipboard reference-files.
Deleting Safari preferences did not solve the problem.

I have not tried uninstall/reinstall of Safari. The main reason is, that I am convinced that Safari is &quot;innocent&quot;. I have tried to paste data from Safari into numerous other programs without problems, including OpenOffice Writer and Textedit.

I haven't got that much time searching for errors these days, so until further advice I will stick to Firefox if I have to use Word, or OpenOffice, if I have to use Safari.

I'm having a similar problem, although mine also occurs when I'm cutting and
pasting from within a Word document. It doesn't happen all the time, and I
haven't been able to figure out a pattern to when it does occur -- but it
does occur frequently. I haven't been able to identify any common denominator
in the Console.
I'm not running any duplicate fonts.
I've done a complete reinstall of Office 04.
I've done a complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
This began happening at a time when I hadn't made any obvious changes to my
OS or to Office.
I've been looking around online for a while and thus far no luck -- but this
definitely does seem to be a problem that crops up again and again.

I haven't any input managers installed - in fact I didn't even know what an &quot;input manager&quot; was until now. I haven't got any folders named &quot;input managers&quot; in my librarys.

But so far no solution still - I'm using Firefox or OpenOffice and at least I know what to do when a crash occurs: Copy something from Firefox to replace the Safari-data, restart Word and go on...

I am suspicious of my clipboard - if someone could tell me how to reset clipboard preferences or something like that...

I am also vexed by this problem and have basically switched over to Open Office, which does not have this problem. I have the latest versions of OS X 10.6.2 and Office Word 12.2.4. The problem occurs copying and pasting from any Apple application (textedit, pages, and safari in particular). I have deleted duplicates fonts, reinstalled office, deleted the normal template, removed input managers, turned off track changes, and the problem persists.

No, you are not the first to have a similar problem, but I am not sure how yo
draw this conclusion... It appears to me that the 2 posters in tha
conversation are the ones who have not responded to the latest replies fro
John & myself. How that translates to 'us' having "given up" in any way
honestly cannot comprehend

Frankly, when those who make the inquiries stop responding it is typically a
indication that a solution has been found -- they just have not taken th
time to share their success story. Whether that success came as a result o
our efforts or from some other source we have no way of knowing. Often ther
is no patent solution to certain situations because there could be an
number of causes resulting in comparable symptoms. If correspondents do no
choose to share their experience we cannot be sure what might work or wha
might not. The newsgroups are about *sharing*, not "grab & go"

Hi <br
I have uninstalled MS Office. <br
Did manual cleaning: removed the folder &quot;Microsoft user data&quot; in my documents-folder. Removed everything from library/application suppor/microsoft office. Removed all preferences called com.microsoft.. <br
I did this in my home folder and in the library for all users. <br
Emptied trash. <br><br>Then I removed duplicate fonts from Mac OS. <br
And finally I repaired permissions on the disk. <br><br>Installed Office 2008 from scratch and applied servicepacks up till 12.2.3 <br><br>Again, there was duplicate fonts, which I have deactivated, and again I repaired permissions. <br><br>Opened word. Typed something. Opened Safari, copied a few words from a website. Tried typing i Word. Word stopped responding again. <br><br>As far as I can figure out, Word crashes as soon as the clipboard contains data from Safari. <br><br>If someone can tell med what to do, I promise I will return here and tell that it worked.

What is your current version & update of Safari?
What is your current version & update of Safari? Can you be more descriptiv
about the kind of content you are copying? Maybe provide links to some of th
sites you are copying from?

FWIW, I am using Office 12.2.3, OS X 10.6.2 & Safari 4.0.4 here & have not
encountered any kind of problem.

I have Safari Version 4.0.4 (6531.21.10) <br>
I am quite sure it does not depend on some particular site - I have tried on a lot of site supplied by random google-search. <br>
But I have just made a crash by copying from <br>

I have 2 folders containing some of the same fonts: \library\fonts and \library\fonts\microsoft <br>
F.x. Arial.ttf is in \library\fonts, and the &quot;font suitcase&quot; is in the Microsoft folder <br>
I have already deactivated duplicates, though.

Word will crash in OS 10.6.2 if there are duplicate fonts.

There was not any real duplicates, but some obsolete font suitcases which I have deleted. I also deleted the folder with &quot;deactivated fonts&quot; - the duplicates I had deactivated earlier. <br>
I also let Onyx delete the font cache and repaired permissions. <br>
Still the problem persists. Word - and Excel by the way - hangs with the spinning umbrella as soon as I touch mouse or keyboard, if data from Safari is in the clipboard. <br><br>Can I be sure to solve the problem if I do a clean install of Snow Leopard? it is an awful hard job to do and I really do not know if it is worth it - maybe I should stick to Openoffice instead.

It does not seem like reinstalling SL should be necessary. Did you apply the10.
It does not seem like reinstalling SL should be necessary. Did you apply the
10.6.2 Combo Update as I suggested in my first reply? I do not see any
indication one way or the other. I'd also try reinstalling & updating Safari
before resorting to an Archive & Install of the OS.

Another possibility;

I believe OS X has a clipboard preferences file which you can delete,
although I am not sure where it is in SL. If so, a new one will be created
automatically. There is also a Safari preferences file you might remove to
see if that makes any difference.

Just out of curiosity, have a look in Word> Preferences - Edit, click the
Settings button in the Cut & paste options. Reply back with what those
settings are.

Deleting Safari preferences did not solve the problem. <br><br>I have not tried uninstall/reinstall of Safari. The main reason is, that I am convinced that Safari is &quot;innocent&quot;. I have seen that in the past with additional input managers installed.
Are you using any application/hack, etc that uses an input manager??

I am having a similar problem, although mine also occurs when I am cutting and
pasting from within a Word document. It does not happen all the time, and I
have not been able to figure out a pattern to when it does occur -- but it
does occur frequently. I have not been able to identify any common denominator
in the Console.
I am not running any duplicate fonts.
I have done a complete reinstall of Office 04.
I have done a complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
This began happening at a time when I had not made any obvious changes to my
OS or to Office.
I have been looking around online for a while and thus far no luck -- but this
definitely does seem to be a problem that crops up again and again.
