To all, please read carefully when I write. I wrote in a post that I use
office 2004.
Yes, but you are posting in a thread titled "Word Office X," that,
apparently, you started. Much confusion ensues, particularly in a thread
going since august.
Regarding Daiya's question , YES i completely removed office
hundreds of times.
The question is did you use the Remove Office tool from MS to remove it?
(found in apps/office/additional tools) Lots of people claim they removed
it--"yes, I dragged all 4 programs to the trash!" but that doesn't do it.

Anyhow, we suggested a lot of troubleshooting fixes last time. Did any of
them work? Did you actually test all your fonts as Beth had suggested,
beyond just using Font Book? Was that what caused the temporary fix?

To dones, please write carefully when you post. Your subject line says
Office X.

D

dones

My subject line says office X not office V.X. Unless you're using mac
os 9, i'm using an office for X version....Please connect your brain
before writing.

D

dones

Office X, yes, it's microsoft office 2004. I'm not talking about
office v.X. I use x to distinguish from 9, anyway I wrote in a post
that is office 2004. And yes much confusion, since i'm still here
saying office is a plague.
Since I answered to Daiyas's question, is supposed i did the exact
thing she asked me. And the answer is YES, again. I tested all my
fonts because I also deleted all of my old fonts, ad installed only
the Mac os X fonts. Anyway, it worked after a reinstallation and
update for about all october. Yesterday I opened a powerpoint document
and it crashed, definitely. Yesterday I also reinstalled completely
office, with all the indications from microsoft, but i still can't
open any application in OFFICE 2004 for mac os 10.3.6. It's the only
program which doesn't work on my mac, and i'm not surprised it comes
from microsoft.

Kevin Watts

Gosh, now I feel like helping you. You're just so goshdarn pleasant.

Perhaps you should save your anger for Microsoft instead of the nice people
here trying to help you.

B

Beth Rosengard

Thank you, Kevin!

And for you, dones, please note that OS X and Office X (or Office v.X, same
thing) are two very different entities. You're the one who's confused, not
us. It would have been correct to say, "Word 2004 in OS X doesn't open
anymore" but there is no such thing as Word 2004 in Office X! You're mixing
up the Operating System (OS) and the suite of applications called Office
(whether Office X or Office 2004).

My subject line says office X not office V.X. Unless you're using mac
os 9, i'm using an office for X version....Please connect your brain
before writing.

My connections are fine. I'm not sure about yours...

Office X is a Microsoft productivity suite consisting of Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and Entourage, with some dozens of support files.

On the other hand, you appear to be using "office X" to represent Mac OS
X, which stands for Macintosh Operating System X, which is a
FreeBSD-based platform that provides an interface for running
applications. It is an Apple product, not a Microsoft product. If so,
your usage is not standard, and you bear the responsibility for the
misunderstanding.

So removing all the fonts did not work. Nothing worked except a remove and
reinstall. But now you tried a remove and reinstall again, and that didn't
fix it, even temporarily?

Perhaps try a remove and reinstall again, repairing disk permissions before
and after, and between the original program and the updates, open each
program once and then repair disk permissions again, to be extra careful.

If a remove and reinstall, which wipes everything out, doesn't work, it
suggests either a bad re-installation or possibly a problem with the OS, or
possibly a bug that only you get for some esoteric reason.

Since the last crash happened on opening a doc, you might also try some of
the corrupt doc fixes once you get it working:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm
(hit reload a few times in Safari, if that doesn't work, try Explorer)

PS.
Since I answered to Daiyas's question, is supposed i did the exact
thing she asked me.
Actually, probably at least 50% of the time that is not the case. Many a ng
reader trying to be helpful spends much time on the wrong track because the
poster ignored half the message, or failed to read a link, etc....

Oh, yes, sure...i'm misunderstanding... I use Mac Os X since the beta
and you try to tell me the difference between office and mac os... I
use mac os since 1993 anyway. How can u distinguish between office for
mac os 9 and office for mac os X? Maybe u should say office for mac os
9... and for the other part office v.x, or office 2004... but maybe
someone here could ask me "hey u are using office 2004, but on mac os
9 (which is impossible) or mac os X? So i wrote word x meaning word
for os x, which was word v.x before (and it had the same problem) and
word 2004 NOW.

exactly

I did. But after the first reinstall, it crashes even the first time I
open each program.

I don't consider a problem with the Os, is the only program in all my
system that crashes. I use tons of programs everyday, and for example
Appleworks works fine. It seems the library.framework is corrupt but i
don't know what to do.

But after that, everything crashes just opening the program not the
document.

Ok, i supposed to better then the average then ;) sorry

Yes, thanx nice people, i'd like to be happy to use Microsoft Office
2004 for mac os x (not office v.X) 10.3.6, a free-bsd based operating
system from Apple, codenamed Panther. Thanx all for help. Ah, using
another user on the system make it working, so is not a system
trouble.

Remove and reinstall should have put in a new, uncorrupted, one. But in a
different post you said it works in a different user account (would have
been handy to mention that on this branch), suggesting it *isn't* the
framework, which is in the apps folder and not per-user. Usually if it's
user-related, trashing something in the prefs folder works, try that. Or
for Word, try the Normal template. Check startup folders. Run through the
standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
Or the ones linked from this page:
http://mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/index.html

Or if you really need Office, set up a new user account and move everything
over. That may be your only recourse since troubleshooting is not fixing
it.
But after that, everything crashes just opening the program not the
document.
Yeah, I said *once you get it working* make sure it isn't your documents
causing the problem.

Since none of the programs run on both, it's generally pretty accurate to
assume that Office X and Office 2004 problems come from people running OS X,
and that Office 98 and Office 2001 problems coming from people running OS 9,
or at least Classic (which people usually mention and which only makes a
difference with certain issues). There's never been a difficulty before....

Not that it's that big a deal--it's just that since you *made up your own
vocabulary,* it's pretty annoying to have you cop all this attitude when
your unique terminology is misinterpreted.

Trying, yes. Not sure if it's working.
How can u distinguish between office for mac os 9 and office for mac
os X?

Office for Mac OS 9 (which is much easier to read when you don't use all
lower-case, and when you spell out words rather than using cutesy
abbreviations, like "u") comes in two versions, Office 98 and Office
2001, so you need to specify which one. Writing "office for mac os 9" is
just as ambiguous as writing "office for mac os X".
Maybe u should say office for mac os 9...

No, I'd never say that. Instead I'd say "Office 98 or Office 2001".
and for the other part office v.x, or office 2004... but maybe
someone here could ask me "hey u are using office 2004, but on mac os
9 (which is impossible) or mac os X?

Right. that would be absurd. If you're using Office X, it has to be Mac
OS X as well. Prior to this exchange, it would never have crossed my
mind that someone would use Office X to mean Office for Mac OS X. It
will now, undoubtedly.
So i wrote word x meaning word for os x, which was word v.x before
(and it had the same problem) and word 2004 NOW.

I think the horse is thoroughly deceased, now. The point of my jumping
in at all was to let you know that you were blaming others, rudely, for
your own ambiguity. Instead of wasting time and bandwidth with any more
justifications, let's get on and deal with real problems.

It means there's some sort of corruption somewhere. It could be to do with
user preferences, user fonts, user Microsoft preferences or your user's
Normal template.

Many of the people here can help with all of those. They're all giving of
their time and help freely, and would be happy to go through each
possibility with you one by one if you don't get sidetracked by lashing out
at them. And as you can see it will make things much easier to follow if you
you use the real names for things so there's no possibility of
misunderstandings.

since i got the same problem on office v.x (not office x) and office
2004, word x is to distinguish between 9.

D

Yeah, but i said that because i specified in the second post that was
office 2004. Anyway, I had the same exact problem on office v.x, which
is NOT office x. Office X doesn't exist, is office v.x. Anyway, I
think i tried everything: the only chance i have now is to use another
user, which is quite bad for me. The problem obviously is on my
personal library, maybe that framework but don't know what to do. I
think I will hope for tiger to solve it ;)
