Ha. Never knew that site was there. You font list displayed perfectly,
even the japanese. Make sure you have Safari preferences ->
appearance->default encoding set to Western (ISO Latin 1)

I finallly noticed what you said about pasting your font list into
Word. That will never work until Microsoft gets off their fat wallet
and does a workmanlike job on unicode in Word.

Try pasting it from Safari into TextEdit to see the difference. It was
never the webmaster at microsoft communities. It was the MacBU and
their three year old excuse that Apple does not do unicode.

Yep, mine is bundled with my ISP, and it is smart enough to know when
I'm trying to sneak in when I'm on the road. It won't let me.
There are a couple of good ones in Germany. Google for "free news
server". Someone out there maintains a very useful list. The bad news
is most won't let you post.

PS Don't get me and Corentin started on fonts. We'll take down the net
between us.

Dear [whoever],

Elliott should be asleep in UK by now, so I'll answer your problem about not
getting to the font compatibility article from here in Australia.

Following your comment above, I entered
<www.microsoft.com/mac/wordx/wordx_main.asp?embfpath=featartx&embfname=wd_cr
ossplatform.asp> in my web browser and got the same Word X articles as you
did. I last looked at the article about a year ago, so it looks like it has
been removed. Pity about that, since I prefer to give the URL for a
comprehensive article produced by Microsoft than copy it, adding unnecessary
length to my "Bend Word to your will" notes. I entered "crossplatform" in
the search field there, and got nothing useful.

In this instance, however, I'm fairly confident that my summary of the
article now apparently removed (following where I said "The upshot of this
article is that ...") encompassed the main points -- and in particular I
think this was a straight quote:

"Word for the Macintosh uses Microsoft¹s TrueType font set for the
Macintosh, including Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New, and Wingdings.
These are the same TrueType fonts that come with Microsoft Windows. This
offers a consistent base set of fonts for every Word user, minimizing
font-mapping difficulties when you cross platforms."

So these are the fonts I use when I want absolutely rock-solid
cross-platform compatibility, which I do get -- I'm working cross-platform
all the time.

Hope this helps.

Found it! -- the article is now incorporated into a Microsoft knowledge base
article (number 302624, titled "WD2001: How to Prepare a Word for Mac
Document for Use on a Windows-Based Computer", at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302624

The text there is the same as I quoted, so either the article has been
edited down when incorporated into the new article or I had copied the lot.

There are a couple of good ones in Germany. Google for "free news

To access the Microsoft newsgroups, the best (fastest) server to use is the
Microsoft News Server which is available to anyone with a newsreader.

You, MacWordXY (what the hell is your name anyway??), already have
newsreading capabilities within Office X in Entourage (or you can use a
dedicated newsreader like those Elliott has mentioned). There is absolutely
no reason for anyone to have to use MS's web news interface which, though
recently improved, still leaves a lot to be desired.

To set up the Microsoft News Server from within Entourage, go to Tools>
Accounts> News and click on New. Use these settings:

Account Name: Microsoft News Server (or whatever you prefer)
Email Account: (Your preferred email account)
News Server: msnews.microsoft.com
This server does *not* require you to log on so you don't need an account ID
or password.
On the Options tab you can set a default signature if you wish and you can
change the number of headers that will be downloaded at one time.

When you close out of the setup dialog, you will see a Microsoft News Server
icon towards the bottom of your folder list. Click on it and say 'yes' to
downloading all the newsgroups.

In the Quick Search box, type "mac.office" (no quotes) and you will see the
current MacOffice newsgroups. Click on the groups that interest you and
then click Subscribe. The groups you've subscribed to will now appear under
the Microsoft News Server icon in the folder list where you can access them
just like email.

Hope this helps.

I kinda hate to tout a possibly competeing product.

I find, Netscape Communicator, Netscape7 , Mozilla, Thunderbird all to be
excellent news/email reader in existence.
Their organization of newsgroups into subfoldesr as well as mail inbox folders
in subfolders is superior.

I've tried OE and Entourage, and yes you can read newsgroups But its not easy.

And with the announcement last spring That there will be no new deveopement of
IE on "any" platform until the new version of Windows comes out. This protends
the death nell of any Web Browser and possibly Mail Reader development for the
Mac and other platforms other than MS windows.

MacWordXY (we prefer real names here, although you can use a fake email
address - see below) probably already has the Microsoft News Server set up
in Entourage - since it comes by default - but may not know where to find
it. It's in the Folder List column, near the bottom. he may still need to
enter some settings where Beth indicated (Tools/Accounts/News/Microsoft News
Server) although probably does not need to make a new one.

On the other hand, MCXYZ#$@ sent his message from :

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.3790.0
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.mac.office.word

i.e. Windows.

To avoid spam directed at contributors of newsgroups, set up a send-only
dummy (spoof) email account.

You do that in Tools/Accounts/Mail/New. Make it a POP account (even if you
use an IMAP account normally) and click to Configure manually. Enter your
real name and a fake email address. Leave all the settings for "Receiving
server" blank. Enter a real SMTP server from one of your real mail accounts
(POP or IMAP or even Hotmail) in "". If your SMTP server requires
authentication, click Advanced sending options and fill in your password.
Click OK, and don't mind the warning that says you won't be able to receive
mail.

Then go into News accounts/Microsoft News Server, and set the email account
to the spoof account you just created.

As Beth says, the Microsoft News Server accessed by a news reader by far the
fastest way to send to the news group. Messages will appear there about 30
seconds after you send them, and you'll start getting replies quickly too.

Clicking <BC25B560.2691%[email protected]> in Entourage
will do nothing. Other newsreaders might be better for that. On the other
hand you can just enter the subject in the little QuickFilter box on top,
and keep clicking the More button until messages start to appear.

Hi Phillip,

There are numerous software apps that have more newsreading features than
Entourage but I find it very easy to use Entourage regardless (and I do so,
though I admit to not having tried any of the other newsreaders since I
really don't need them).

However, while it's true IE will not be further developed, I hope you didn't
take that to mean that the same is true for Entourage, because it's not.
Now whether or not Entourage's newsreading abilities will be improved is
another story, but Entourage itself appears to be around for the long haul.

I agree that Netscape 7.1 (aka Mozilla) has a superior newsreader function,
but Entourage is also *extremely* easy to set up. I have Netscape, Mozilla,
Mozilla Tunderbird, Thoth, and MT-NewsWatcher, but tend to favor Entourage.
I tried the others for around 8 months before upgrading to Office X.
Netscape was the best of the lot, but it's slow.

might even get customizable thread sorting :)

The Word unexpected quits may be also be caused by EndNot

Bug
-----
The files

EndNote 7 CWYW Word
EndNote 7 CWYW commands.do

located a

"/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Office/Startup/Word

make Word 10.1.4 (Office 10.1.5) for Mac OS X 10.2.8 quite unstable. Actually, Word quits unexpectedly when you copy, cut or paste text

Note: this bug is real, but to get an unexpected quit you must usually copy, cut or paste several times. Eventually you get it

Workaround
----------------
1. Quit all open applications

2. Move the culprit files above to another folder on the Deskto

3. Open Word

That prevents the unexpected quit of Word.
