Word X crashes upon

C

cansarah

Word crashes when i open any word file or after clicking ok on
Project Gallery for a blank document. I trashed the Normal (in
Preferences) and a new Normal is not created. I can open any Word file
and even a blank one if I hold shift when opening. Any insight on how
to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
Crash report is as follows:

Word crashes when i open any word file or after clicking ok on
Project Gallery for a blank document. I trashed the Normal (in
Preferences) and a new Normal is not created. I can open any Word file
and even a blank one if I hold shift when opening. Any insight on how
to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
Crash report is as follows:

Several things can make Word crash on startup.
- Corrupted fonts (but the crash is usually when the applciation
displays the splash screen so I don't think it is the case)
- thrid party plug-ins (do you have EndNote or Acrobat for instance??)
- some Thrid Party QuickTime plug-in (Toast, DivX...). In this case,
simply update then and it shoudl go away
- eventually corrupted pref or .plist files.

In any case, you should repair permissions on the Drive
(DiskUtility>First aid pane)

Hey!! Are u talking about word X or word 2004? Or are u

Thanks for your reply. I did repair permissions on the drive but the
problem persists. In response to your question, yes I have EndNote,
however I didn't use it lately. Should I reinstall it and see what
heppens?
Does the fact that by holding the "SHIFT" key while Word opens up
doesn't cause it to crash, give any hint on where the problem is?
Also, I cannot find my "Normal" file under Templates. As I said, it
was there and I deleted it hoping it be restored (I found this info in
Mactopia.com)...but it was not. Could this be a problem?
Thanks,

You should deactivate the EndNote plug-in to see if it fixes the
problem. Remove the two files from /Applications/Microsoft Office
X/Office/Startup/Word.

Yep. It's a problem with plug-ns and other optional items. I suspect the
Carbon Registration Database is corrupted on your Mac. Simply trash it
and Word will recreate it (it's in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft).
Also, make sure Office is up to date (latest version is 10.1.6).

Normal is recreated automatically if it is missing. Don't worry,

It's Word X: it's in the title ;-))))

The same type of question arose in another thread. Word X is the
official name of Word in Office X. If it says Word X, I tend to believe
it is indeed the version of WOrd that ships in Office X. Otherwise the
title would probably be "Word for MacOS X crashes..." or "Word for X..."
:)))

Now it could also be a typo in the title ;-)))) In this case, for Word
for MacOS X I have a 50/50 chance to be right since there are only two
versions (X and 2004) ;-)))))))))))

Word X could be word V.X or word 2004. Word X can include both. The
version u are talking is word V.X

J

JE McGimpsey

If "u" are going to continue to post in these groups and be understood,
"u"'ll need to adopt the group's convention that "Word X", "Word v.X",
and "Word 10" all refer to the Microsoft Word (version 10) application
normally found in the Microsoft Office X folder of the Applications menu.

"U" can insist on using "Word X" for Word 2004, but "u"r posts will
likely not be interpreted correctly.

If "u"r objective is to convert others into making "Word X" an ambiguous
usage, "u"'re of course welcome to try. If, OTOH, "u"r objective is to
answer questions or to get questions answered, "u" should probably drop
the ideosyncratic semantics and accede to the group gestalt.

"U"r choice.

Actually that's not true. Even though it's a bit confusing, the correct name
for the version of Word that comes in "Office v. X" is "Word X", NOT "Word
v. X". Take a look at this page about Office v. X at the MacTopia website:
w> and scroll down the page.

You seem to find it very difficult to admit that in this case you made a
mistake and were corrected by people who know better. It's not a very
important mistake, but the fact remains that the way you like to refer to
"Word X" to mean "Word for Mac OS X" (that is, either Word X OR Word 2004)
is wrong and confuses others. So just learn the right way or accept that
you'll continue to cause confusion.

Some of the blame must lie with the Microsoft Marketing department who
decided it would be catchy to latch on to Apple's "X" name for its brand new
System 10. They were originally going to call it "Office X" (as well as Word
X, Excel X, etc.) when they worried there might be confusion with the
Windows version "Office XP" (which, incidentally, has Word 2002, not Word
XP).. So they added the "v. ", but only for the "Office" name, not for Word,
Excel, etc. Probably they should never have departed from the "year" titles
- except that "2002" was already taken on the Windows side.

I'm not sure if you care about any of this anyway. You seem to just want to
call things what you want to call them and didn't like being corrected in
public. Language is for communication. If you insist on calling things what
you like to call them, instead of by their real names, you'll continue to
cause confusion and will continually be corrected by people who know better
once they figure out what you really mean. Your own naming was not
unreasonable logically - I can see now what you meant - it's just that it
was wrong. So why not learn the right name and move on?

Hello Colin,

Some thoughts on the need to respond; the need to keep to the same thread;
and the desirability, over the millennia, of calling things by their right
name:

This is probably the most friendly and helpful newsgroup around, and it
would be unfortunate if it got to be otherwise. I'm not sure the situation
is "sad" yet. Here's why I think that's so.

Looking back at your earlier thread, I saw at the time, and have now looked
back and confirmed, that Corentin Cras-Méneur gave you what seemed to be a
fairly authoritative response on 20 November. You don't appear to have
replied to it, unless I'm missing something somewhere (sometimes a post can
drop out).

Corentin's could be the start of a series of posts, each time refining the
detail and sometimes trying then eliminating dead ends, by which it should
be possible to reach a solution. But if other "regulars" here see that you
haven't responded to Corentin's post, they assume you have solved the
problem and haven't got back to say so. That happens so often that it's
virtually par for the course. The result is the "regulars" don't chip in
further.

But there are other impediments: your new post, being under a new subject
heading, has lost the detail of your original question. That means anyone
who wants to help has to dig back to find it. It's no good searching by
your name, because you posted it under a different identity. No worry,
though -- I've found it now: "Word X crashes upon", poster cansarah.

As for me, although I help people in other areas I haven't responded to your
query, mainly because the intricate fault diagnosis that's involved in this
particular area of Word X's problems is not my area of strength (I skipped
from Word 2001 to 2004 because of the flaky implementation of Word X, though
I readily acknowledge that if Microsoft's Mac Business Unit had not brought
out Office v.X when OS X was in such an early version, Apple's transition to
the new OS may never have reached critical mass.) My solution is simple:
move to Word 2004, which is a huge improvement on Word X. But I suspected
you may not want to hear that, so did not contribute ;-)

Now, on looking back at your original thread I see another reason that I
didn't read beyond the first few words. Interleaved among the other posts
was the babbling of one Dones. I didn't paid any attention to him because my
experience is that people who think they don't have time to hit the Shift
key or two of the letters in a three-letter word don't have the attention
span to listen to the advice they get here. And usually the problem is in
the individual's witting or unwitting configuration of the software, not
with the default installation. Nevertheless, patient volunteers contribute
their time here to try to help with these one-off problems.

But JE McGimpsey and P. Berkowitz did read Dones's remarks. And underlying
the point they are making is that some precision is needed in describing
software and its shortcomings. If, Alice in Wonderland style, words mean
"only what I intend them to be" -- viz., "Word X" (or was it Word v.X?) can
mean the one for the Mac that came out in 2002 *or* in 2004) -- then
would-be helpers cannot adequately define the problem in their heads. No
wonder the Chinese have a proverb: "The beginning of wisdom is to call
things by their right names".

Anyway, Colin, sorry I haven't the expertise to come up with a solution --
but I'll watch with interest if Corentin et al. try to help you further --
once you have answered his query of 20 November.

Y'all have a nice day there in sunny UK! :)

Ok, you can not pay attention to me, that's not my problem. As wasn't
my problem to make a post ONLY to say that I meant WORD 2004. Not to
type shift, but a post. Anyway, my configuration is standard, and
Office 2004 doesn't work, i tried everything here and the only way to
make it work is to change user, so I have to admit that you can't
solve this problem. Let's hope that microsoft will look for it.
Yesterday I deleted all my fonts and replaced them from the ones on
panther disk, but no way. Here again:

Anyway, my configuration is standard, and
Office 2004 doesn't work, i tried everything here and the only way to
make it work is to change user, so I have to admit that you can't
solve this problem. Let's hope that microsoft will look for it.
Yesterday I deleted all my fonts and replaced them from the ones on
panther disk, but no way.

I can't tell if the crash log provides enough information or not,
however it sure suggests a font error.

There are four places that Word 2004 looks for fonts. Did you replace
all of them?

1) HD:System:Library:Fonts - you'd need administrator access to
replace them

2) HD:Library:Fonts - again, you'd need administrator access to replace
them

3) ~:Library:Fonts - where ~ is your home directory

and

4) HD:System Folder:Fonts - Classic/OS 9 system folder

Ok, I answered you in another post. Anyway, Offce 2004 is the ONLY
suite that doesn't work on my user (except entourage which works). If
I change user, it works.

I doubt it's in the shared spaces then. It has to be in the user
account.

You should NEVER (and the shift key wasn't stuck here) touch this folder
or anythin in /System
2) HD:Library:Fonts - again, you'd need administrator access to replace

I doubt it (see above)
and

4) HD:System Folder:Fonts - Classic/OS 9 system folder

same thing.
'
3) ~:Library:Fonts - where ~ is your home directory

There are additional things you can check beside corrupted fonts in
~/Library/Fonts
The Office font cache file in the ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder
and ultimately the user font cache created by the system.
For these, you can delete the files called:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.ATSServer.*
and reboot immidiately.

John has pretty good tips on his site about tracking down corrupted
fonts:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/troubleshooting.html

otherwise you can use an application like FontDoctor (even in demo mode)
to find out what font is responsible for your trouble.

same thing.

Actually, that one is known to have caused a lot of trouble with older
versions of fonts later quasi-"duplicated" in OS X. I don't know how, but it
does. I know it is accessed by OS X. For example, back in OS 10.1 it was
still the only way to get Cyrillic fonts installed. There were, of course,
never any special permissions or administration requirements for this
folder. I would try removing _all_ the fonts there as a first step, and see
what happens. If that fixes the problem, then (just in case you ever do need
to use Classic) start putting back half at a time until you narrow down
which font is the problem.

Actually, under Panther it is sufficient to use the Font Book utility to
disable all the Classic fonts. This keeps them from being visible to any
Mac OS X apps, while at the same time they and they alone will be
visible to any Classic apps. There is no need to remove them physically.
