Word X crashes upon

Actually, under Panther it is sufficient to use the Font Book utility to
disable all the Classic fonts. This keeps them from being visible to any
Mac OS X apps, while at the same time they and they alone will be
visible to any Classic apps. There is no need to remove them physically.

That's a good idea. Thanks, Matt. I've never had occasion to need to do this
so I've never looked into Font Book. I'll do it now.

I suppose it's my turn, right?

1) Please follow the advise you have been given about running the Remove
Office application to entirely remove Office. There are a couple of points
that are important:

A) Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions BEFORE you run Remove Office.
If Remove Office cannot access the damaged files, it can't remove them.

B) Run Remove Office from the user ID from which it will not work. Yes,
this will remove Office from the machine, but it's actually the Preference
Files we are after, and you're just about to put Office back.

2) Now: Track down the Microsoft Office folder and delete it.

3) Track down any Microsoft preferences and delete them.

4) Track down any templates you have left and DELETE THEM. It's quite
likely that the problem is lurking in one of them. Not a virus, but it acts
like one. Especially, look inside your Microsoft User Data folder for
templates. Make sure that you find and delete the Word Startup folder.

5) Make sure you get any Internet Explorer preferences too: Word uses one
of them. Internet Explorer will rebuild its prefs next time you run it.

6) Obtain and run an up-to-date virus scanner. Perform a "deep scan" that
also looks inside archives. Yes, your problem "could" be a virus. Make
sure you choose one that states explicitly that it will find PC viruses as
well as Mac viruses (I use Norton, but they've dropped the ball recently so
I am about to switch). Puhlease spare us the rubbish about "Macs are immune
to viruses". Microsoft worked hard to ensure that Office is close to 100
per cent compatible with PC Office. Which means it is close to 100 per cent
compatible with 95 peer cent of the viruses in the world :)

7) Now, empty your Trash. Any files still in the trash may not be replaced
during installation. And if it *is* a virus, it will happily re-infect your
machine from the trash.

8) Now reboot the computer. This forces a rebuild of various caches.

9) Now install Office 2004 by running the Installer. If you drag and drop,
I will personally come and choke you.

If you follow these steps exactly and in sequence, you will have a working
Microsoft Office inside an hour. If you decide that you can skip or change
some of the steps, the process may not work.

Cheers

Ok, I answered you in another post. Anyway, Offce 2004 is the ONLY
suite that doesn't work on my user (except entourage which works). If
I change user, it works.

Looks almost certain to be a font conflict to me. I assume ATS is Apple
Type Services?

OK: Before you do the procedure I just sent to your previous thread: move
the entire contents of the Font folder in the bad User ID to a folder on the
desktop. Zip (create an archive of) the folder, then restart the computer
to clear the system and office font caches.

Chances are you have a version of a font in that user's font folder that is
incompatible with one of the fonts in one of the other font folders.

If that doesn't bring Word right, then do the procedure in my previous post.

Cheers

Ok, you can not pay attention to me, that's not my problem. As wasn't
my problem to make a post ONLY to say that I meant WORD 2004. Not to
type shift, but a post. Anyway, my configuration is standard, and
Office 2004 doesn't work, i tried everything here and the only way to
make it work is to change user, so I have to admit that you can't
solve this problem. Let's hope that microsoft will look for it.
Yesterday I deleted all my fonts and replaced them from the ones on
panther disk, but no way. Here again:

Ok thanx i will try. I have to say that I have and had this problem
after opening a powerpoint document sent by mail, but was a document
from a friend which used it without problems.

D

dones

I partially solved the problem: I used font book and deactiveted all
my fonts, and it works. But they are 559 and will be difficult to find
which. Anyway, my font folder with 559 fonts is the one on general
library, not the one on my user; if I change user, it will use the
user fonts, but will use also the general font library which is the
same. Now is a mistery to understand why that font library crashes on
my user and not on the others... And I used font doctor before and it
said everything ok. And more, the day it crashed i didn't add any
fonts, if opening a powerpoint document doesn't add a font by itself.

D

dones

OK I SOLVED my problem. I first tried font book to deactivate every
font and it worked. So I trashed os 9 fonts, and i trashed also my 600
fonts on hd/library/fonts. Then I putted the font i got on
user/library/fonts on hd/library/fonts (80 fonts) and it works. Now
not only works, but my system is faster ;)

That problem is usually caused by incompatible VERSIONS of the same font in
two different folders.

If you disable all of the fonts in your user font folder, things ought to
work.

Now re-enable "half" of them (and remember which half). If the problem
comes back, the bad font is in that half. If it doesn't, it's in the
disabled half.

Re-enable half the remainder. Repeat until the problem comes back. The bad
font is among the fonts you just re-enabled.

Be alert to the fact that there may be more than one font causing the
problem.

Personally, I would not run my system with 559 fonts enabled: each one takes
up a bit of memory and the system will run like a wet week. Enable only the
ones you USE REGULARLY and your box will perform much better.

I'm also not a big fan of user fonts. I don't see why any user on the box
can't use any of the fonts I have. I'm too lazy to change it on this
computer, but if I were dealing with a large number of fonts as you are, I
would put them all in a single folder accessible to all, and not have any in
the user folders.

Hope this helps

my fonts, and it works.

The fact is that Microsoft Office installs the Microsoft fonts into your
user Fonts folder, not into (local) computer Library Fonts folder. These
will be the most up-to-date versions of the those particular fonts. The
copies (of Microsoft fonts) in your Library/Fonts folder were usually
installed by Internet Explorer, and are a much older version (usually
denoted by an "Internet Access" marker- so get rid of those, not the others.
Any other user on your computer also using Office will have the very same
fonts already installed in their user Fonts folder by Office too - not a
problem.

However local vs. user are never the conflict. The way OS X works, if it
finds a version in the user Fonts folder, it looks no further. That's
precisely why Office installs them there. Apple fonts and versions will be
in the System fonts folder or local Fonts.) The exception appears to by the
OS 9 Fonts folder in /System Folder, if you have Classic installed. Those
seem to have the capacity to interfere where they don't belong. The perfect
solution is what Matt proposed two days ago: use Font Book on /Applications
(in Panther) to disable to whole Fonts folder in /System Folder/ (NOT
/System/Library/ !). They still work in Classic apps, but won't interfere in
OS X apps. I've seen it for myself now.

That's a lot of fonts.... THat's where the FontBook becomes handy. It's
sad that in the process you lost all these fonts. I*'m glad you got
Office to work though (and the system to be more responsive).

Solution that worked for me:

I had this same problem for days and I was about to throw my computer
out the window. I ended up replacing everying except the hard drive,
reinstalled my system numerous times, ran all the test people
suggested-- I was on my last straw. Finally I noticed that there was
something fishy about my hard drive. Everytime I searched for something
on my computer, when it reached my back-up hard drive it would freeze
and pop up 0x0000009c Machine Exception Error. After testing out the
hard drive (succesfully) I decided to change the order the hard drives
were plugged into the MB. In other words the cable that connected the
hard drives to the mother had to be twisted. I switched the order they
were plugged in leaving the tail end of the cable to be plugged into
the back-up and--- voila! No 09c error!!!
Hope this helps out for everyone else.
